Dating Potential As A Factor Influencing The Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment, Kara Fetter Aug 2007

Dating Potential As A Factor Influencing The Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment, Kara Fetter

Theses and Dissertations

Seventy-nine undergraduate females participated in a laboratory analogue developed to investigate a variable labeled as "Dating Potential," defined as the combination of a man's physical attractiveness and status. Researchers attempted to determine if dating potential could influence a young woman's tolerance of peer sexual harassment. Using an instant-message type interaction, participants were exposed via computer to one of four conditions consisting of a picture and profile of a potential male dating candidate. While a man's status did not influence the participant's tolerance, results indicate that women exposed to an attractive male were more likely to tolerate sexually harassing responses.

Optimization Of Control Source And Error Sensor Locations In Free Field Active Noise Control, Connor Raymond Duke Aug 2007

Optimization Of Control Source And Error Sensor Locations In Free Field Active Noise Control, Connor Raymond Duke

Theses and Dissertations

Previous work has shown that active noise control (ANC) can be applied to axial cooling fans. Optimization of the control source and error sensor placement is desired to maximize the attenuation using ANC. A genetic algorithm was developed to find the optimal placement of control sources for a given primary source. The optimal configuration of control sources around a single primary source was shown to be a linear arrangement of the sources. This holds true for both two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional configurations. The higher-order radiation of the linear arrangement has also been verified experimentally, but the improvement in the …

Testing The Assumption Of Sample Invariance Of Item Difficulty Parameters In The Rasch Rating Scale Model, Joseph A. Curtin Aug 2007

Testing The Assumption Of Sample Invariance Of Item Difficulty Parameters In The Rasch Rating Scale Model, Joseph A. Curtin

Theses and Dissertations

Rasch is a mathematical model that allows researchers to compare data that measure a unidimensional trait or ability (Bond & Fox, 2007). When data fit the Rasch model, it is mathematically proven that the item difficulty estimates are independent of the sample of respondents. The purpose of this study was to test the robustness of the Rasch model with regards to its ability to maintain invariant item difficulty estimates when real (data that does not perfectly fit the Rasch model), polytomous scored data is used. The data used in this study comes from a university alumni questionnaire that was collected …

Maternal Psychiatric Disturbance At Eight Weeks Postpartum And Its Relation To Personal, Child, And Family Functioning At Two To Three Years Postpartum, Erin N. Haugen Aug 2007

Maternal Psychiatric Disturbance At Eight Weeks Postpartum And Its Relation To Personal, Child, And Family Functioning At Two To Three Years Postpartum, Erin N. Haugen

Theses and Dissertations

A large body of evidence suggests interpersonal environments of women with postpartum depression are impaired. However, it is unclear whether postpartum anxiety is associated with similar psychosocial impairment, particularly relating to parental and relationship functioning. Many studies examining postpartum anxiety have been cross-sectional in nature rendering it difficult to make long-term predictions about functioning of anxious mothers and their families. The present study was one of few longitudinal studies examining the relation between postpartum anxiety and long-term psychosocial functioning. Mothers reporting significant anxiety (n = 20) and mothers denying significant anxiety and depression (i.e., control mothers; n = 35) at …

The Roles Of Lcrg And Lcrv In Secretion Control Of Yops In Yersinia Pestis, Mohamad Hamad Aug 2007

The Roles Of Lcrg And Lcrv In Secretion Control Of Yops In Yersinia Pestis, Mohamad Hamad

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, combats the host immune response by injecting proteins called Yops "Yersinia outer proteins" into the eukaryotic host cells using a type III secretion system "T3SS". The activity of the type T3SS is regulated by several proteins including YscF, YopN, TyeA, SycN, YscB, LcrG, and LcrV. YscF forms the extracellular needle complex of the T3SS and is involved in secretion regulation and in sensing environmental signals for secretion activation. YopN, TyeA, SycN, and YscB form a complex in the cytosol of Y. pestis that blocks the secretion of Yops when conditions do not favor …

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit Aug 2007

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit

Theses and Dissertations

To paraphrase a well-known historian, there is too little nature in the study of history. Although environmental history is a well established field, nature and the physical environment are still often excluded agents in history pedagogy. The following essay is an effort to remedy this problem. This dissertation has two main objectives. The first is to define and describe environmental history and present a rationale for its inclusion as a major component of survey history courses. The second is to outline ways college teachers can include an environmental perspective in their instructional strategies. It includes three sample lesson plans that …

Identification Of The Interaction And Co-Localization Of Leishmania Adenine Nucleotide Translocase With Tor, Rania Elsabrouty Aug 2007

Identification Of The Interaction And Co-Localization Of Leishmania Adenine Nucleotide Translocase With Tor, Rania Elsabrouty

Theses and Dissertations

Leishmania species are parasitic protozoa of the order Kinetoplastida that cause leishmaniasis. Treatment of leishmaniasis with antimonials is difficult and resistance is increasing. Alternative compounds have been investigated, one group is the toxic purine analogs. Resistance to purine analogs, potential anti-Leishmania agents, is brought about by TOR (TOxic nucleoside Resistance protein). TOR is an atypical, multidrug resistance protein that was originally discovered in Leishmania. It renders the cells less sensitive to toxic nucleosides by curtailing the ability of the nucleoside permeases to transport purines across the plasma membrane. Targets of TOR (TOT's) are proteins inside Leishmania that interact with and/or …

Differential Response Of Various Spore Species To Sporicidal Disinfectants, Michael David Pratt Aug 2007

Differential Response Of Various Spore Species To Sporicidal Disinfectants, Michael David Pratt

Theses and Dissertations

In the fall of 2001, letters laced with anthrax spores were delivered to various news organizations in New York and Florida, as well as to two Senators in Washington, D.C. Over 22 anthrax infections and five deaths resulted from exposure to these spores, and decontamination of the affected buildings was both time consuming and costly. Since these attacks, interest in sporicidal disinfectants has increased greatly. Many chemical sporicidal disinfectants are available commercially, but the exposure time required to sterilize can be relatively long. In addition, some spores are simply injured or inhibited by chemical disinfectants, but not necessarily killed. Studies …

Continuous Simulation Of Groundwater Use And Effluent Discharge In Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Ponds At Five Locations In The Southeast U.S, Sugeng Triyono

Theses and Dissertations

Long-term climatological data were used to evaluate the effectiveness of a drop/add management strategy to reduce groundwater use and effluent discharge in catfish ponds in the southeast U.S.. A drop/add approach is based on the creation of a storage volume in the pond for rainfall collection. The storage volume is created by allowing water level in the pond to decrease until some minimum level is reached. When the minimum level is reached, the pond is partly refilled, leaving the remaining volume available to capture incident precipitation. In this way, the role of precipitation in the water budget is increased. In …

The Role Of A Non-Microtubule-Based Spindle Matrix In Eukaryotic Cellular Division, Melissa Gwen Chambers

Theses and Dissertations

A non-microtubule-based spindle matrix has been observed in Drosophila melanogaster meiotic and somatic cells. This matrix comprises the proteins: Skeletor, Megator and Chromator, which localize to the nuclear periphery and chromosomes at prophase and to the microtubule spindle during mitosis and meiosis. This matrix might play a role in nuclear organization and microtubule assembly and stabilization. It is important to determine the presence or absence of this matrix in other species in order to compare form and function to that in Drosophila. These matrix proteins were studied in both normally dividing cells and cells in which division was disrupted. Our …

Nmr Structure And Relaxation Studies Of Dhfr From Haloferax Volcanii At High Salt, Bulent Binbuga

Theses and Dissertations

The studies of enzymes from extreme sources have gained significance due to their increasing potential applications. The proteins from halophiles (salt loving) have adapted to challenging environmental conditions and require salt for their structure and function. How halophilic proteins adapt to a hypersaline environment is still an intriguing question. It is important to mimic the environmental conditions of the sample under investigation with experimental techniques. In this study, structure and dynamic features of a halophilic enzyme have been investigated under high salt conditions. The acquisition of NMR data on high salt samples has always been problematic. We have devised a …

The Influence Of Probiotic Lactobacilli On Glucose Uptake By Caco-2 Cells, Arun Kumar Rooj

Theses and Dissertations

The resident microbes of human gastrointestinal tract cause both harmful and beneficial effects and these effects can be modulated by the administration of beneficial probiotic bacteria. Probiotics attribute several therapeutic and preventive beneficial effects, for both humans and animals. Despite the good effects of probiotic bacteria, the role of probiotic bacteria or their metabolites on the nutrient uptake by enterocytes is very less known. Most studies describe the genomic effects of probiotic bacteria on the transport properties. This thesis describes the short term (10 min or less) non-genomic effects of probiotic bacteria on the glucose uptake by human enterocytes like …

The Metaphase Checkpoint In Cells Undergoing Mitosis Without Chromosome Duplication, Mary Kathrine Johnson Aug 2007

The Metaphase Checkpoint In Cells Undergoing Mitosis Without Chromosome Duplication, Mary Kathrine Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO) were arrested with hydoxyurea at the beginning of DNA synthesis. Subsequent treatment with caffeine induced cells to bypass S-phase and undergo mitosis with unreplicated genomes (MUG). Treated cells built a normal spindle and distributed unattached kinetochores to daughter cells. To determine if MUG cells obey the metaphase checkpoint, we used immunoflourescence to detect and localize known metaphase checkpoint and motor proteins. In addition, the drug taxol was used to stabilize microtubules in MUG cells. The localization of CENP- E, the presence of anaphase A, taxol arrest, and taxol release acted in a similar manner as …
