Towards The Total Synthesis Of Thioviridamide: Thiyl Radical Approach To The Beta-Thioenamide Linkage Formation, Jung-Hoon Kang
Towards The Total Synthesis Of Thioviridamide: Thiyl Radical Approach To The Beta-Thioenamide Linkage Formation, Jung-Hoon Kang
Theses and Dissertations
We developed an approach to the β-thioenamide linkage contained in the S-(2-aminovinyl)cysteine (avCys) residue of thioviridamide.1,2 Kinetic and thermodynamic control of radical additions of thiols to ynamides were studied for the formation of β-thioenamide linkage. Thiyl radicals are electrophilic and ynamides are electron-rich alkynes. This complementary polarity of the radical and acceptor increases the likelihood of a successful radical addition reaction. Because little is known about these types of compounds (β-thioenamides), we were unsure what kinds of yields and stereoselectivities (cis vs. trans) to expect. The adduct stability is another issue to consider. Fortunately, under typical radical addition conditions, the …
Utilitizing And Moving Beyond A Constructionist Approach To Trace The Emergence Of Racial And Ethnic Identities Among Pre-Mexican, Mexican And Americans Of Mexican Descent, Owen Williamson
Theses and Dissertations
Cornell and Hartmann (2007) developed a constructionist framework that can describe the development of racial and ethnic identities. Yet this framework has greater utility than its authors have intended as it also provides the best rubric to date for comprehending the transitions between collective identity group types. This study engages in a thorough investigation of the development of racial and ethnic identities within the context of those that precede it via an ethnohistorical analysis. It also demonstrates that this framework is capable of describing pre-modern religious and national identity types in addition to racial and ethnic identity types. This permits …
Ontology Generation, Information Harvesting And Semantic Annotation For Machine-Generated Web Pages, Cui Tao
Ontology Generation, Information Harvesting And Semantic Annotation For Machine-Generated Web Pages, Cui Tao
Theses and Dissertations
The current World Wide Web is a web of pages. Users have to guess possible keywords that might lead through search engines to the pages that contain information of interest and browse hundreds or even thousands of the returned pages in order to obtain what they want. This frustrating problem motivates an approach to turn the web of pages into a web of knowledge, so that web users can query the information of interest directly. This dissertation provides a step in this direction and a way to partially overcome the challenges. Specifically, this dissertation shows how to turn machine-generated web …
A Comparison Of Repeated Uniaxial Tension And Compression On Bone-Like Cells Over Fourteen Days, Nathaniel David Schultz
A Comparison Of Repeated Uniaxial Tension And Compression On Bone-Like Cells Over Fourteen Days, Nathaniel David Schultz
Theses and Dissertations
Litter is a possible source of Campylobacter colonization for broilers as well as contamination of crops when used as fertilizer. A survey of Arkansas broiler litter indicated that Campylobacter recovery rates were higher in pine shavings and rice hulls than sand. Two experiments utilized three types of litter, which were artificially contaminated with Campylobacter. After 24 hours no Campylobacter could be recovered from any sample. Campylobacter growth was also examined for used pine shaving litter in varying conditions: aerobic atmosphere, micro aerobic atmosphere (6% O2), and moisture content. Campylobacter was recovered for all treatments at the initial sampling, and by …
Semantic Construction With Provenance For Model Configurations In Scientific Workflows, Amritanshu Thakur
Semantic Construction With Provenance For Model Configurations In Scientific Workflows, Amritanshu Thakur
Theses and Dissertations
In the computationally intensive and diverse scientific environment of geosciences, substantial volumes of data are generated by specialized complex processing systems called ‘models’. These datasets contain little knowledge of their processing. Therefore a high degree of domain expertise is required to interpret, regenerate and tweak their production. Provenance is described as a general ability to record and evolve information related to the creation of data. We extend this idea further by proposing a mechanism by which a model’s setup and its domain semantics are integrated with the data it produces. This creates a scope for controlling model executions using their …
Effects Of Culture Methods And Simulated Microgravity Conditions On Development Of Bovine Embryos Produced In Vitro, Songi Jung
Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the optimum in vitro culture conditions for in vitro fertilized bovine embryos among culture methods and (2) to investigate whether bovine fertilization and embryo development would occur in simulated microgravity conditions in vitro. In the first part of this study, the result showed that the microdrop method was the optimum culture method among groups; however, FBS supplementation did not significantly affect the bovine preimplantation embryo development in vitro. In the second part of this study, the result showed that bovine in vitro fertilization did not occur in simulated microgravity conditions. Moreover, …
The Effects Of Low Atmosphere Stunning And Deboning Time On Broiler Breast Meat Quality, Vamsidhar Battula
The Effects Of Low Atmosphere Stunning And Deboning Time On Broiler Breast Meat Quality, Vamsidhar Battula
Theses and Dissertations
A randomized complete block design with three replications (n=432, 72 broilers per treatment) was utilized to evaluate the effects of electrical (ES) and low atmosphere pressure stunning (LAPS) on the quality of broiler breast meat deboned at 0.75, 2, and 4h postmortem. The L* values were lower (P<0.05) for LAPS than ES at 4 h and 2 h deboning times. Shear force did not differ (P>0.05) between stun methods but decreased (P<0.05) as deboning time increased. Consumers were clustered into 8 groups based on preference and liking of samples. Sixtyive percent of consumers (3 clusters) liked all broiler breast treatments. Within these three clusters, some consumers preferred (P<0.05) 4 h deboned samples over those deboned at 2 h (Cluster 7), and other consumers preferred (P<0.05) those deboned at 2 h over 4 h samples (Cluster 6). Data reveals that both stunning methods provide high quality breast meat with minimal product differences.
Developmental Evolution Of Genetic Regulation And Signaling Of The Dorsoventral Axis Of Protostomes And Deuterostomes, Tammy Lynne Malachowski
Developmental Evolution Of Genetic Regulation And Signaling Of The Dorsoventral Axis Of Protostomes And Deuterostomes, Tammy Lynne Malachowski
Theses and Dissertations
The placement of Metazoan species into correct clades has become of prime concern to the study of evolutionary development, since the most recent phylogeny of Metazoans indicates embryological divergence. Genetic regulatory networks have been extensively described for some species but not for others. This study examines possible divergence of bilaterians at the protostome-deuterostome divide by examining dorsoventral patterning genes. A specific maternally active gene, dorsal/rela, the final element in the maternal pathway, was found to be a driving force behind this divergence and was co-opted from genes already existing in the Metazoan ancestor.
Antimicrobial Effect Of Yogurt Lactic Acid Bacteria And Muscadine Products On Enterobacter Sakazakii, Weiien Weng
Antimicrobial Effect Of Yogurt Lactic Acid Bacteria And Muscadine Products On Enterobacter Sakazakii, Weiien Weng
Theses and Dissertations
Enterobacter sakazakii has been associated with powdered infant formula outbreaks which caused high mortality rate illnesses in infants in recent years. Current research was mainly focused on searching for natural antimicrobial agents which may be incorporated into baby foods to control this emerging pathogen. Yogurt and muscadine products were used in this study. The antimicrobial effects of yogurt were evaluated on agar plates and in a simulated gastrointestinal model. In the agar spot tests, diluted yogurt sample containing lactic acid bacteria at 106 CFU/mL was antagonistic toward E. sakazakii. However, the antimicrobial effect of yogurt on E. sakazakii in the …
Protocols For Preconditioning Of Patellar Tendon For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Richard Lee Crawford
Protocols For Preconditioning Of Patellar Tendon For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Richard Lee Crawford
Theses and Dissertations
The ACL is one of the major ligaments in the knee connecting the femur to the tibia which provides stability by resisting shear in sagittal plane. ACL tears occur in 1 out of 3000, and due to inability to heal, reconstructive surgeries are performed at a rate of 200,000/year. Final graft fixation tension during surgery has been shown to wane due to stress-relaxation which has been correlated with negative clinical outcomes. Therefore, preconditioning, which currently is an isometric load (88N), is performed to remove stress-relaxation after the final tension has been applied in vivo. Three preconditioning protocols, creep, stress relaxation, …
Availability And Seasonal Use Of Diurnal Roosts By Rafinesque's Big-Eared Bat And Southeastern Myotis In Bottomland Hardwoods Of Mississippi, Candice Leeann Stevenson
Availability And Seasonal Use Of Diurnal Roosts By Rafinesque's Big-Eared Bat And Southeastern Myotis In Bottomland Hardwoods Of Mississippi, Candice Leeann Stevenson
Theses and Dissertations
Rafinesque’s big-eared bat (Corynorhinus rafinesquii) and southeastern myotis (Myotis austroriparius) are listed as species of concern in Mississippi. They use bottomland hardwood forests for roosting habitat; however, much of these forests in Mississippi have been lost or degraded. I seek to characterize availability and evaluate use of diurnal tree roosts for these presumably rare bats. Approximately 1,250 ha of bottomland hardwood forest on Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge were surveyed. I measured characteristics of 622 cavity trees. Analyses revealed that these bats most often used cavities of large diameter trees (≥70 cm DBH). Rafinesque’s big-eared bat and southeastern myotis roosted commonly …
Evaluation Of Chitosan And Collagen As Scaffolding For A Tissue Engineered Aortic Heart Valve, Steven Christopher Waller
Evaluation Of Chitosan And Collagen As Scaffolding For A Tissue Engineered Aortic Heart Valve, Steven Christopher Waller
Theses and Dissertations
Children born with congenital heart valve defects require open-heart surgery to implant an artificial replacement valve. These valves are unable to grow with the developing child and need replacing every 5 years. Tissue engineered heart valves, capable of growing with the patient, would alleviate the need for repeat surgery. I hypothesize chitosan and collagen possess advantageous qualities as scaffolding for a tissue engineered heart valve. This study evaluated chitosan and collagen hydrogels as potential scaffold materials. Chitosan scaffolds had suitable pore size/distribution and scaffold strength; however, they were unable to sustain cell attachment or viability. Collagen gels were assessed for …
Beauty Standards: Negotiations Of Social Life Among African American College Women, Sheena Kaori Gardner
Beauty Standards: Negotiations Of Social Life Among African American College Women, Sheena Kaori Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
The literature concerning the relationship between black women and beauty has revealed conflicting findings: some argue that black women are negatively affected by ‘white’ beauty ideals while others argue for the existence of an alternative ‘black’ beauty standard. The purpose of this research is to describe and analyze young African American women’s awareness of beauty standards and their perception of themselves with relation to these standards, examine whether beauty standards are negotiable, and explore how perceptions of self affect daily social interactions. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with black females between the ages of eighteen and twentyive that were …

Three different surveys were sent out to 356 agriscience teachers, counselors, and administrators at schools with either a Concepts of Agriscience Technology course or an …
Synthesis And Reactions Of Cyclic Ketene-N,N-Acetals, Guozhong Ye
Synthesis And Reactions Of Cyclic Ketene-N,N-Acetals, Guozhong Ye
Theses and Dissertations
Cyclic ketene-N,N-acetal chemistry was explored. 2-Methylimidazoline and 2-methyl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine derivatives were prepared from the condensation reactions of diamines with nitriles under Lewis acid catalysis and used as the precursors of cyclic ketene-N,N-acetals including the N-methyl and N-acyl cyclic ketene-N,N-acetals. The reactions of 2-methylimidazoline with excess benzoyl chlorides in THF or MeCN in the presence of triethylamine generate N,N'-diacyl-beta-keto-cyclic ketene-N,N-acetals. The corresponding reactions of 1,2-dimethylimidazoline under the same conditions form the ring-opened (Z)-3-((2-benzamidoethyl)(methyl)amino)-3-oxo-1-phenylprop-1-enyl benzoates. The latter reactions feature the formation of carbon-carbon bonds, carbon-nitrogen bonds, and carbon-oxygen bonds in one operation. The reactions of 2-methyl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine with excess acid chlorides in Et3N/THF generate …

Development Of A Fish-Based Index Of Biotic Integrity For Oxbow Lakes Of The Yazoo River Basin, Mississippi, Nathan Aycock
Theses and Dissertations
Fish community data were used to develop an index of biotic integrity (IBI) to quantify habitat degradation in oxbow lakes of the Delta region of the Yazoo River Basin. Daytime boat electrofishing was used to sample the fish assemblage of 30 oxbow lakes during 2006-2007. We evaluated 70 candidate metrics based on their responses to measures of anthropogenic disturbance. Six metrics were retained for inclusion in the IBI: species richness, Shannon’s diversity (H’), average tolerance, and catch rates of buffalo, orangespotted sunfish, and litho-psammophilic spawners. The six IBI metrics showed strong multivariate relationships with measures of habitat degradation in a …
Development Of A Sensory Descriptive Lexicon For Calamondins (Citrus Mitis Blanco) And Consumer Acceptance Of Calamondin Yogurt, Ye Tian
Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this research were to establish a semi-descriptive sensory language that describes the attributes of calamondin fruit and develop yogurt products flavored with calamondin and test consumers’ acceptance of the products. A total of 89 sensory terms were established by trained panelists to describe calamondins. Yogurt products were developed with 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% calamondin pulp. Results demonstrated that no significant difference (P>0.05) occurred for consumers’ acceptance of yogurt appearance and texture, and significant differences (P<0.05) occurred for consumers’ acceptance of yogurt flavor and overall liking. Generally, the yogurt with 10% honey and the yogurt with 10% honey and 5% calamondin pulp were well accepted by consumers. The consumers were grouped into 6 clusters based on their prefences. The majority (60%) of the consumers liked moderately yogurts with 10% honey, and 0% and 5% calamondin pulp respectively.

Design, Construction, Inverse Kinematics, And Visualization Of Continuum Robots, Srinivas Neppalli
Theses and Dissertations
Continuum robots are the biologically inspired robots that mimic the behaviors of mammalian tongues, elephant trunks, and octopus arms. These robots feature a backboneless structure similar to their biological counterparts, such as termed muscular hydrostats. The drawbacks of two existing designs are examined and a new mechanical design that uses a single latex rubber tube as the central member is proposed, providing a design that is both simple and robust. Next, a novel verification procedure is applied to examine the validity of the proposed model in two different domains of applicability. A two-level electrical control scheme enables rapid prototyping and …

Moreover, …
Factors Determining Per Acre Market Value Of Hunting Leases On Sixteenth Section Lands In Mississippi, Jacob Daniel Rhyne
Factors Determining Per Acre Market Value Of Hunting Leases On Sixteenth Section Lands In Mississippi, Jacob Daniel Rhyne
Theses and Dissertations
Valuation of leases based on the contingent valuation may be biased because hypothetical data has limitations. This study used the hedonic method to evaluate factors affecting the value of hunting leases on Sixteenth Section Lands in Mississippi that are auctioned to the public. Due to the competitive nature of the issuance of these leases, this study provides a comprehensive and unbiased estimate of the impact that cover type, game quality, distance to urban areas, and location have on hunting lease prices. The implicit prices of these characteristics indicate that land managers should adopt shorter lease lengths, smaller lease sizes and …
Hierarchical Geographical Identifiers As An Indexing Technique For Geographic Information Retrieval, John Christopher Lakey
Hierarchical Geographical Identifiers As An Indexing Technique For Geographic Information Retrieval, John Christopher Lakey
Theses and Dissertations
Location plays an ever increasing role in modern web-based applications. Many of these applications leverage off-the-shelf search engine technology to provide interactive access to large collections of data. Unfortunately, these commodity search engines do not provide special support for location-based indexing and retrieval. Many applications overcome this constraint by applying geographic bounding boxes in conjunction with range queries. We propose an alternative technique based on geographic identifiers and suggest it will yield faster query evaluation and provide higher search precision. Our experiment compared the two approaches by executing thousands of unique queries on a dataset with 1.8 million records. Based …

Nmr Backbone Chemical Shift Assignments Of The Hvdhfr1:Nadph Binary Complex, Karthikeshwar Vangala
Theses and Dissertations
Extremophiles are the organisms that survive in environments which are inhospitable to other creatures. This thesis made an attempt to understand the enviromental effects, in particular saline, on enzyme structure by using three dimensional NMR. The enzyme DHFR1 from halophile Haloferaxi volcanii is complexed with its coactor NADPH, and the saline effects on the complex are studied by comparison with its apoenzyme, hvDHFR1. Backbone chemical shift assignments of the hvDHFR1:NADPH complex were attained which can be functional (along with future work) in understanding the effect of salts on enzyme structure, function, and flexibility. A total of 27 amino acids were …

Theses and Dissertations
Interior Double-crested cormorant reproduction was examined on a large geographical scale to evaluate management actions. Three distinct breeding areas across Ontario were selected. Beginning in 2002, over 11,000 preledged cormorants have been marked. During 2006 and 2007, re-observation of banded birds, colony data such as nest, egg, and chick measurements, and island morphology, were collected. Data revealed no significant regional differences in adult size. However, eggs in eastern Lake Ontario (ELO) were larger than North Channel of Lake Huron (NChan) and Lake of the Woods (LOW). Chicks in ELO throughout development were smaller than NChan and LOW. Number of gulls …
Restoring Blackland Prairies In Mississippi: Remnant-Restored Prairie Comparisons And Techniques For Augmenting Forbs, Andrew Clifford Dailey
Restoring Blackland Prairies In Mississippi: Remnant-Restored Prairie Comparisons And Techniques For Augmenting Forbs, Andrew Clifford Dailey
Theses and Dissertations
One knowledge gap hindering prairie restoration is uncertainty about when a restored prairie communities sufficiently resemble remnant prairie. I surveyed plant communities in remnant prairies, prairies > 5 years post-restoration, and prairies ≤ 5 years post-restoration in Mississippi. Remnants had the greater species richness. Restored prairies had less cover of woody plants and forbs but greatest non-natives. Restored prairies were not similar to remnant prairies (similarity index = 28.9 - 25.9%), primarily because restored prairies had fewer prairie forbs. Thus, restoration may take decades. Transplanting locallyapted prairie forbs into restored prairies may accelerate restoration, but this has not been evaluated adequately. …
