The purpose of this study was to examine the role of an online workspace component of a community in the work of a community of practice. Much has been studied revealing the importance of communities of practice to organizations, project success, and knowledge management and some of these same successes hold true for virtual communities of practice. Study participants were 75 Education and Public Outreach community members of NASA's Science Mission Directorate Earth Forum. In this mixed methods study, online workspace metrics were used to track participation and a survey completed by 21 members was used to quantify participation. For …
A Critical Review Of The Utility Of Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Operation Enduring Freedom And Operation Iraqi Freedom Veterans: A Protocol For Group Treatment, Kristen Leishman
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive non-empirical dissertation was to examine the utility of the concept of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) to conceptualize, assess, and treat veterans returning from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) who have been exposed to traumatic event(s). Many have been exposed to unique traumatic factors, such as frequent deployments of greater length, urban combat theaters, and guerilla warfare. The prevalence of mental health disorders within this veteran population is high while utilization of services remains low. This body of work explores to what extent veterans present with trauma symptoms that may be …
Clinician Conceptualizations Of Post-Migration Refugee Youth Previously Exposed To Political Violence, Sara Michele Mehrabani
Clinician Conceptualizations Of Post-Migration Refugee Youth Previously Exposed To Political Violence, Sara Michele Mehrabani
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have examined the experience of distress with refugee children and adolescents who have been exposed to political violence. Recognition has also been given to migration stress and traumatic grief as additional stressors in the lives of refugee youth. Studies in this area have established the fact that development appears to influence the expression of distress in youth who have experienced adverse experiences such as political violence. Reaction to political violence and the refugee experience also appear mediated by culture as well as other contextual factors such as the nature of the violence. The purpose of this study was to …
Treatment Of Schizoid Personality: An Analytic Psychotherapy Handbook, Zachary Wheeler
Treatment Of Schizoid Personality: An Analytic Psychotherapy Handbook, Zachary Wheeler

The Effect Of Birth Order On Age At First Sex And Total Number Of Lifetime Sexual Partners, Lacey Christine Clark Anderson
The Effect Of Birth Order On Age At First Sex And Total Number Of Lifetime Sexual Partners, Lacey Christine Clark Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Research in the field of birth order is expansive and has been used to explain many social processes, including the sexual behavior of young adults. However, results regarding the influence of birth order on risky sexual behavior are somewhat limited, sometimes contradictory, and often lack generalizability to larger populations. In this thesis, using
data from the National Health and Social Life Survey (1992) and multiple regression techniques, I investigate the influence of ordinal position on two measures of sexual behavior, age at first sex and total number of lifetime partners, among young adults age 18 to 30. Results show that birth …
Historical Hydroclimatic Change At Theodore Roosevelt National Park: 1895 - 2011, Rhonda Jan Fietzek-Devries
Historical Hydroclimatic Change At Theodore Roosevelt National Park: 1895 - 2011, Rhonda Jan Fietzek-Devries
Theses and Dissertations
Although numerous studies have examined hydroclimatic and climatic changes in our national parks, no previous studies have examined historical temperature, precipitation and hydroclimatic changes at Theodore Roosevelt National Park (South Unit). Documenting historical trends in temperature, precipitation and hydroclimatic variables is important for understanding present and future changes in vegetation and wildlife.
I used 117 (1895 - 2011) years of temperature and precipitation data obtained from the PRISM data network to construct the historical climatic water budget time series based upon the Thornthwaite water-budget model. Trend lines and descriptive statistics are used to analyze the monthly, seasonal and annual climatic …
Effects Of Prazosin On Nightmares In Adults With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Laurie A. Tefft
Effects Of Prazosin On Nightmares In Adults With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Laurie A. Tefft
Theses and Dissertations
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000) estimates that in the United States, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects 8% of adults at some point during their life. Nightmares have a severe impact and can cause great distress for individuals with PTSD (Ohayon & Shapiro, 2000). Spoormaker and Montgomery (2008) suggested that sleep problems may be more of a risk factor for PTSD then a symptom of the disorder. Either way, it is evident that sleep needs to be addressed in those with this diagnosis. Posttraumatic nightmares are seldom the topic of PTSD studies utilizing …

Asymmetric Hydrogenation Of Α, Β-Unsaturated Carboxylic Acid Over Chiral-Modified Palladium Catalyst, Shuai Tan
Asymmetric Hydrogenation Of Α, Β-Unsaturated Carboxylic Acid Over Chiral-Modified Palladium Catalyst, Shuai Tan
Theses and Dissertations
The production of optically pure chemicals through enantioselective catalytic reaction plays a key role a variety of industrials (e.g., pharmaceutical, agrochemical). Among several established methods, chiral-modified supported transition metal catalyst has been addressed attentions since past decades due to an environmental concern. Asymmetric hydrogenation of α, β-unsaturated carboxylic acid over Pd catalyst is of particular interest in this area. Nevertheless, the spectroscopic aspect, as well as the kinetic mechanism of such reaction system are still not clearly understood and require further study. In this work, a model catalytic reaction has been investigated from both spectroscopic and kinetic view. To be …
Linking Obesity To Colorectal Cancer: Recent Insights Into Plausible Biological Mechanisms, Catherine Guffey
Linking Obesity To Colorectal Cancer: Recent Insights Into Plausible Biological Mechanisms, Catherine Guffey
Theses and Dissertations
Obesity has emerged as a leading environmental risk factor for the development of CRC. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship have not yet been fully explained. Recent literature has focused on 1) inflammatory processes, 2) adipokines, and 3) estrogen. Obesity-enhanced inflammation is largely orchestrated by increases in adipose tissue macrophages leading to the secretion of TNF-alpha, MCP-1, and IL-6, all of which are linked to CRC. Adiponectin is decreased with obesity and has been reported to be negatively associated with CRC, while leptin, which is increased, is positively associated with the disease. Estrogen has been shown to influence CRC, although …
Examining The Direct And Interactive Effects Of Positive Coping On Depressive Symptomology In African American Women, Heather Andrea Eaddy
Examining The Direct And Interactive Effects Of Positive Coping On Depressive Symptomology In African American Women, Heather Andrea Eaddy
Theses and Dissertations
In the larger stress and coping literature, several studies have examined ethnic differences in stress experiences and coping behaviors (Plummer and Slane, 1996; Slavin et al., 1991; Brantley et al., 2002). However, these studies are often comparative in nature and fail to examine within group variation (Plummer & Slane, 1996; Slavin et al., 1991; Smith, 1985). Similarly, studies have also neglected to examine how African American women cope when confronted with certain stressors and the associated mental health outcomes. With this in mind, the goal of the current study is to close existing gaps by examining the relationship between routine …

The Flying University, Catherine Friesen
Theses and Dissertations
The Flying University is solo theater performance framed as an academic lecture about Marie Curie and her discovery of radium, delivered to a group of women who have gathered in secret to further their education. As the lecture proceeds, the professor brings in her own research based on a study of Esther Horsch (1905-1991) who lived on a farm in central Illinois. She introduces data from Esther's journals, personal memories, and dreams about Esther's life. The professor's investigation of radium plays at the intersections of magical and mundane, decay and the transformation of life, and the place of ambition in …
Writing Across Differences: Afro-Germans, Gender, And Diaspora, 1970s-1990s, Tiffany Nicole Florvil
Writing Across Differences: Afro-Germans, Gender, And Diaspora, 1970s-1990s, Tiffany Nicole Florvil
Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation, "Writing Across Differences: Afro-Germans, Gender, and Diaspora, 1970s-1990s," explores the birth of the Afro-German movement, including its two organizations: The Initiative of Black Germans (Initiative Schwarze Deutsche, ISD) and Afro-German Women (Afro-deutsche Frauen, ADEFRA) in West and then reunified Germany. In it, I uncover the efforts of Black Germans to organize a diasporic and literary movement to confront discriminatory discourses and practices that simultaneously ignored them and positioned them as "Others" in postwar German society. Through their diverse literature and coordinated events, Black Germans enacted membership in the African diaspora, articulating and claiming an identity that supported a …
Chemical Leaching Methods And Measurements Of Marine Labile Particulate [Fe] And Δ56fe, Brandi Nicole Revels
Chemical Leaching Methods And Measurements Of Marine Labile Particulate [Fe] And Δ56fe, Brandi Nicole Revels
Theses and Dissertations
Iron (Fe) is an essential nutrient for life. However its low solubility in the seawater limits primary productivity in many regions of the world's oceans. Dissolved phase Fe (<0.4μm) has traditionally been considered the most biologically accessible form, but, recent studies suggest the particulate phase (>0.4μm) may contain an important, labile reservoir of Fe that may also be available to phytoplankton. Although valuable, Fe concentrations of particles alone do not provide complete evidence about the sources of particulate Fe to the ocean, or the extent particulate iron may be accessed by phytoplankton. Fe isotopes may help to reveal the biogeochemical cycling of particulate Fe. This study aims to develop a chemical leaching technique that accesses the …0.4μm)>
Building Resiliency: Supporting Elementary School Students Through Parental Bereavement, Sandra Kerr Ray
Building Resiliency: Supporting Elementary School Students Through Parental Bereavement, Sandra Kerr Ray
Theses and Dissertations
This study employed qualitative methods to learn what understandings, practices, and interventions were used by educators from one elementary school to support bereaved children in the classroom and as members of a school community. Educators reported uncertainty about how children grieve, how to talk with children about a deceased parent, how to talk with the bereaved child’s peers about parental death, and how to balance the bereaved child’s emotional and academic needs. Educators were also uncertain about how to recognize and intervene when a parental death was remote in time and the child’s grief response was attenuated (e.g., anxiety, disengagement, …
Insects As Indicators Of Environmental Stress, De Anna Estella Beasley
Insects As Indicators Of Environmental Stress, De Anna Estella Beasley
Theses and Dissertations
In the face of climate change-related events and anthropogenic disturbances, understanding the impacts of these events on species richness, abundance and distribution is important for us to mitigate biodiversity loss and better predict consequences for the environment and for human life. Insects are excellent models for understanding the consequences of environmental stress due to the sensitivity of their development and behavior. The overall focus of my dissertation research is the investigation of fluctuating asymmetry and oviposition behavior as indicators of environmental stress. My research includes a meta-analysis of published literature, and empirical research that was part of a collaborative initiative …
The Reproductive Ecology Of Plethodontid Salamanders In The South Carolina Inner Coastal Plain, Heather Rena Oswald
The Reproductive Ecology Of Plethodontid Salamanders In The South Carolina Inner Coastal Plain, Heather Rena Oswald
Theses and Dissertations
Nest- site selection is a critical process in the life history of amphibians, directly influencing offspring survival and parental fitness. When and where an amphibian chooses to nest is strongly influenced by a range of environmental cues. We monitored plethodontid salamander breeding behavior in seepage wetlands in the South Carolina inner Coastal Plain. Seepage wetlands are ideal for monitoring semiaquatic salamander breeding, because they provide habitat for both larval and adult salamanders while having relatively predictable, constant water temperatures and presence year round. We observed the breeding phenology of three sympatric salamanders (Eurycea cirrigera, Desmognathus auriculatus, and Pseudotriton ruber) in …

Microencapsulation Of A Connexin-43 Mimetic Peptide As A Novel Wound Healing Agent In An Ocular Injury Model, Keith Brian Moore
Theses and Dissertations
Corneal transplantation and related surgical procedures are areas of tissue replacement which have seen promising advances. Currently, cornea transplants are one of the most common surgical procedures, with approximately 40,000 occurring each year in the United States. Still, problems exist with a 20% rejection rate, post surgical infections, and the need for a constant supply of donors. The ability to safely and quickly heal and regenerate corneal epithelia fills an area of advancement in regenerative medicine, with implications reaching beyond the scope of vision therapies toward healing of a wide range of tissues and wounds. In vivo corneal wounds were …
Gold Nanoparticles And Peptoids As Novel Inhibitors Of Amyloid Beta Aggregation In Alzheimer's Disease, Kelly Ann Moore
Gold Nanoparticles And Peptoids As Novel Inhibitors Of Amyloid Beta Aggregation In Alzheimer's Disease, Kelly Ann Moore
Theses and Dissertations
In 2012 it was estimated that one in every nine Americans over the age of 65 has Alzheimer's disease (AD) (1). These patients experience gradual loss of memory, cognition, and behavioral stability eventually leading to death (2). These symptoms were first described in 1906 by Alois Alzheimer and now are the classic signs of the number one neurodegenerative disease today. Current AD therapies delay or mitigate the symptoms associated with AD to improve the quality of life for the patient; however, there is currently no cure for those that have been diagnosed. In order to develop a possible treatment for …
A New Method For The Comparison Of Survival Distributions, Jaymie Shanahan
A New Method For The Comparison Of Survival Distributions, Jaymie Shanahan
Theses and Dissertations
The assessment of overall homogeneity of time-to-event curves is a key element in survival analysis in biomedical research. The currently commonly used testing methods, e.g. log-rank test, Wilcoxon test, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, may have a significant loss of statistical testing power under certain circumstances. In this thesis we replicate a testing method (Lin & Xu, 2009) that is robust for the comparison of the overall homogeneity of survival curves based on the absolute difference of the area under the survival curves using normal approximation by Greenwood's formula, and propose a new weight component to their test statistic. The weight component …
Rewriting The Human: Death Anxiety And Posthuman Vision In Literature Since 1945, John Allen Brooks
Rewriting The Human: Death Anxiety And Posthuman Vision In Literature Since 1945, John Allen Brooks
Theses and Dissertations
ISS_para>The technology-driven years following the close of World War II provided a new lens through which the human subject could be rethought and, theoretically, improved: no longer did physical and mental shortcomings have to limit the capacity of the individual. The atomic bomb and Colossus computer, though destructive forces, pushed scientists and philosophers to consider new models of the human, including flesh/machine amalgamation and reinscription as downloadable, digital information. While these posthuman constructions promised to distance the human from its material shortcomings, especially its vulnerability to bodily decay and death, they encountered significant resistance in the twentieth century.

Selling The Country’S Secrets: Willa Cather’S Eco(Self)Criticism In My Antonia And The Professor’S House, Elizabeth Nicole Morgan
Selling The Country’S Secrets: Willa Cather’S Eco(Self)Criticism In My Antonia And The Professor’S House, Elizabeth Nicole Morgan
Theses and Dissertations
This study considers Willa Cather's ecological consciousness as a writer of place, particularly in My Antonia and The Professor's House. In these two works, Cather's narrative distance provides her with the room to investigate the relationship between humans and their environments. Jim Burden, Godfrey St. Peter, and Tom Outland all exploit their environments to greater or lesser extents based on their way of seeing the world, which Cather draws attention to through her careful characterization and narrative distance. In each narrative, Cather forces readers to recognize the environmental consequences of egocentric vision, and the way such vision can be sustained …
Exploring The Role Of Culture And Race In Stroke Rehabilitation Disparities, Jennifaye Verdina Greene
Exploring The Role Of Culture And Race In Stroke Rehabilitation Disparities, Jennifaye Verdina Greene
Theses and Dissertations
A study found that racial differences exist in stroke rehabilitation care and outcomes between African Americans (AAs) and Caucasian Americans (CAs). In addition to health status, the rehabilitation care of AAs with stroke (AAwS) may be influenced by cultural and or racial similarities or differences that exist between themselves and their physical therapists (PTs). Distorted perceptions of culture and race in the patient-PT relationship may contribute to disparities in stroke rehabilitation care and outcomes for AAwS. Current stroke rehabilitation literature lacks qualitative research that examines racialized differences in treatment. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory research study was to investigate …

Investigating Developmental Patterns Of Symptom And Impairment Change Among Youth With Adhd, Subthreshold Adhdand Youth Without Adhd, Lorie Love Geryk
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction. Despite a substantial prevalence of subthreshold Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and research indicating that many youth with this disorder have impaired functioning and negative outcomes, few studies have considered patterns of symptom and functioning change for youth with probable ADHD, subthreshold ADHD and youth without ADHD transitioning from childhood to adolescence. Additionally, we are not aware of any studies examining predictors of impairment severity among youth with subthreshold ADHD, and few studies have examined predictors of treatment utilization and patterns of symptom and functioning change based on medication status for youth with subthreshold ADHD compared to youth with ADHD. Methods. …

Generational Differences In Motivation To Attend College, John Michael Cote
Theses and Dissertations
The National Center for Education Statistics recently released a report indicating that the amount of full-time students attending college has increased by 45 percent over the past ten years. While many reasons assist in explaining this increase in college attendance, this study explored the differences in motivations for attending college amongst generations. This quantitative study used secondary data collected by the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman survey to explore the differences in reasons for attending college amongst the Baby Boomer, Generation X, and Millennial generations and predict reasons that may be important to future generations of college students. These …
Modeling Ultrasonic Field Emanating From Scanning Acoustic Microscope For Reliable Characterization Of Pathogens (Biological Materials), Rowshan Ara Rima
Modeling Ultrasonic Field Emanating From Scanning Acoustic Microscope For Reliable Characterization Of Pathogens (Biological Materials), Rowshan Ara Rima
Theses and Dissertations
Acoustic microscopy provides extraordinary advantages over state-of-the-art invasive imaging techniques to determine the mechanical properties of living colonies of pathogens and micro-organisms. It is possible to obtain the morphomechanical parameters of the pathogenic colonies e.g. variation of thickness, stiffness and the coefficients of attenuation, using scanning acoustic microscope (SAM). However, the process requires an expert with extensive understanding of SAM and ultrasonic signals which is very time consuming and expensive for complex form of analysis. Due to lack of a suitable computational tool, presently the ultrasonic wave scattering, reflection and transmission through the biological specimens cannot be properly visualized. Without …

Doc Dynamics In Eddies Of The Sargasso Sea, Eric Matthew Lachenmyer
Theses and Dissertations
Bacterial productivity and size-fractioned rates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) excretion from primary and secondary producers were measured in two eddy types, one anti-cyclonic (February 2012) and one cyclonic eddy (July 2012), in the Sargasso Sea. Bacterial productivity (BP) rates in the cyclonic eddy were highest in the center (9.2 mg C m-2d-1) and edge (10.4 mg C m-2d-1) of the eddy compared to the anti-cyclone center (2.2 mg C m-2d-1) and edge (5.1 mg C m-2d-1). Rates of DOC excretion from14C-tracer experiments were not significantly higher than background; lack of accumulation of labeled material indicated very fast uptake of …
Biomechanics Of Porcine Renal Artery And The Development Of A Replacment Vessel, Mohamed Gabr
Biomechanics Of Porcine Renal Artery And The Development Of A Replacment Vessel, Mohamed Gabr
Theses and Dissertations
Mechanical characterization of biological soft tissues is essential in the field of biomedical engineering. In this study several loading experiments have been performed to efficiently characterize the passive mechanical response of both native porcine renal arteries and newly developed tissue constructs. The first aim of these studies is to determine whether there is a difference in mechanical response between the main renal artery and its first branch. After fitting the bi-axial data to a Holzapfel-type constitutive model, the results show that there is no statistical difference between the model parameters for renal artery and the first branch. The only significant …
Functional Block Copolymers For Applications In Advanced Materials, Energy Storage, And Lithography, Christopher George Hardy
Functional Block Copolymers For Applications In Advanced Materials, Energy Storage, And Lithography, Christopher George Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
Block copolymers spontaneously self-assembly into a wide variety of ordered nanostructures on the length scale of 5 - 100 nm due to the thermodynamic immiscibility between the covalently linked, chemically distinct polymer chains. Incorporating desirable functional groups into block copolymer systems can lead to confinement of the functional group to a specific domain upon microphase separation of the block copolymer. The resulting materials display desirable characteristics of the functional group in a well-ordered nanostructure. Such systems have been utilized in a wide variety of applications including catalysis, ceramic materials, and membranes. This dissertation is focused on the synthesis, characterization, self-assembly …
