Implications Of Child Abduction For Human Rights And Child Welfare Systems: A Constructivist Inquiry Of The Lived Experience Of Guatemalan Mothers Publically Reporting Child Abduction For Intercountry Adoption, Carmen Monico
Theses and Dissertations
The Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption was agreed upon in 1993 at the Hague Conference on Private International Law to address growing allegations of abduction, sale, and trafficking of children around the world. The Hague Convention guides countries to attend to the “best interest of the child” in making decisions on intercountry adoptions, and to apply the “principle of subsidiarity,” which calls for the consideration of family and kinship placement and national adoption prior to the consideration of intercountry adoption. This dissertation research focused on the experience of Guatemalan mothers reporting …
Selection Of A Non-Phosphorylated Peptide Inhibitor Of Brca1’S (Brct)2 Domain, Railey White
Selection Of A Non-Phosphorylated Peptide Inhibitor Of Brca1’S (Brct)2 Domain, Railey White
Theses and Dissertations
A growing body of literature suggests Breast Cancer-Associated Protein 1 (BRCA1) is important not only as a cause, but also as a target in the quest for cancer treatment. BRCA1 deficient cells treated with radiation as well as PARP inhibitors and other chemotherapeutics demonstrate a greater sensitivity than cells with wild type BRCA1. Inhibitors of BRCA1 would take advantage of this synthetic lethality and represent a significant advance in cancer treatment as well as an understanding of the biology of DNA repair. Despite significant study of BRCA1 protein and function, it is a large protein (220 KDa) that is still …
Intra-Mitochondrial Injury During Ischemia-Reperfusion, Hema Aluri
Intra-Mitochondrial Injury During Ischemia-Reperfusion, Hema Aluri
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiac injury is increased following ischemia-reperfusion. Mitochondria are the “effector organelles” that are damaged during ischemia (ISC) when there is no blood flow. Resumption of metabolism by damaged mitochondria during reperfusion (REP) results in increased cell injury. Current therapeutic interventions to pre-condition and post-condition the heart during ISC are ineffective during certain conditions like aging and diabetes due to defects in the signaling cascades. In contrast, mitochondrial-based strategies are effective in protecting the heart during ISC-REP. Hence direct therapeutic targeting of dysfunctional mitochondria will provide the potential to bypass the upstream signaling defects and intervene directly upon the effector organelle. …
Isolation, Characterization And Synthesis Of Asthma Inducing Fungal Glycolipid And Analytical Method Development For Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Mimics, Vinod Chaudhary
Isolation, Characterization And Synthesis Of Asthma Inducing Fungal Glycolipid And Analytical Method Development For Novel Antimicrobial Peptide Mimics, Vinod Chaudhary
Theses and Dissertations
NKT cells are an important part of human immune system and recognize a specific set of antigens called glycolipids. Only a handful of "natural" NKT cell antigens are known till date. Although NKT cells play a protective role against pathogenic organisms, imbalances in NKT cell functions are implicated in many diseases including asthma. Allergic asthma, a Th2 driven inflammation of airways, is primarily caused by inhalation of environmental allergens. In the last decade, inhaled allergen Aspergillus fumigatus has been under scrutiny for the presence of NKT cell antigens that might trigger asthma. We successfully isolated, characterized and synthesized a "natural" …
Synthesis And Immunological Evaluation Of Type I, Type Ii, And Gamma Delta Nkt Cell Antigens, Brian L. Anderson
Synthesis And Immunological Evaluation Of Type I, Type Ii, And Gamma Delta Nkt Cell Antigens, Brian L. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the immune system is to protect our bodies from infection. One way it accomplishes this task is through the presentation of foreign pathogens to NKT cells. After an antigen is presented to the T cell receptor, activated NKT cells quickly release soluble chemical signals, termed chemokines and cytokines, that modulate the response of the immune system. Due to the immunological relevance of NKT cell activation, we developed and synthesised non-natural analogs of immunostimulatory type I, II, and gamma delta NKT cell antigens. The immunological evaluations of these analogs resulted in identification of sulfatide as a gamma delta …
The State Of The Research: Meta-Analysis And Conceptual Critique Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Ryan Lance Nelson
The State Of The Research: Meta-Analysis And Conceptual Critique Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Ryan Lance Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers studying the long-term cognitive sequelae of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) have produced disparate results. Some studies have shown little to no long-term cognitive effects while others have shown that persistent cognitive sequelae continue to affect a subgroup of patients. Meta-analysis has been used to try to integrate these contrasting results to foster a coherent understanding of the cognitive outcomes following mTBI. However, previous meta-analyses of long-term cognitive sequelae have used studies from a period of mTBI research where methodological rigor has been called into question (Carroll, Cassidy, Holm, Kraus, & Coronado, 2004). Using studies from this period, meta-analysts …

Water Soluble Polymer Solar Cells From Electrospray Deposition, Marshall Sweet
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation reports the fabrication and characterization of thin films from the water soluble polymer sodium poly[2-(3-thienyl)-ethyloxy-4-butylsulfonate] (PTEBS) by electrospray deposition (ESD). Contiguous thin films were created by adjusting the parameters of the electrospray apparatus and solution properties to maintain a steady Taylor cone for uniform nanoparticle aerosolization and controlling the particle water content to enable coalescence with previously deposited particles. The majority of deposited particles had diameters less than 52 nm. A thin film of 64.7 nm with a root mean square surface roughness of 20.2 nm was achieved after 40 minutes of ESD. Hybrid Solar Cells (HSCs) with …

Creation Of A Computational Simulation Of Maternal Trauma In Motor Vehicle Accident, Benjamin C. Weed
Creation Of A Computational Simulation Of Maternal Trauma In Motor Vehicle Accident, Benjamin C. Weed
Theses and Dissertations
Maternal trauma is the leading non-obstetric cause of maternal and fetal death. Because the anatomy of a pregnancy is distinct, and highly transient, the pregnant woman and her fetus are both susceptible to injuries which are not seen in the typical trauma patient. The pregnant uterus, the placenta, and the fetus are all relatively poorly supported, as compared with non-transient abdominal or thoracic organs, which can lead to injuries such as uterine rupture, placental abruption, and fetal trauma or death. The leading cause of maternal trauma is automotive collision, and other common causes include violence, falls, and other accidents. Automotive …

Evaluation Of Nitrification And Methods To Minimize Denitrification Loss For Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) On Mississippi Alluvial Plain Soils, Paxton Wayne Fitts
Theses and Dissertations
Minimal studies have evaluated nitrification and subsequent denitrification for soils where rice is produced in the delayedlood system. Laboratory and field experiments were conducted at USDA-ARS and the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, MS to quantify the nitrification potential of southern USA soils, and evaluate nitrogen amendments aimed to reduce nitrification rates on clay soils. The Sharkey clay soil at Stoneville, MS was one of the soils with the greatest nitrification potential. Dicyandiamide (DCD) increased the number of days that half the total recovered inorganic–N was in the ammonium–N form (half-life) by approximately 3old and 18% when compared …
Fermentation Of Glycerol To Biogas Under Isobaric And Variable Pressure Conditions, Benjamin P. Hartenbower
Fermentation Of Glycerol To Biogas Under Isobaric And Variable Pressure Conditions, Benjamin P. Hartenbower
Theses and Dissertations
With consideration to the crude glycerol surplus driven by the growth in biodiesel manufacturing, alternative uses for biodiesel derived glycerol have become increasingly essential. Anaerobic digestion of the glycerol reduces the chemical oxygen demand of the glycerol waste product, while capturing biogas as an energy source that can be used on site to reduce heating cost at a biodiesel facility. In this thesis, kinetic parameters are extracted from batch experimental data and applied to steady state equations. A flow sheet for the application of anaerobic digestion to biodiesel derived glycerol is developed and explored. The economic analysis of the scenario …
Conversation Of Values: A Community Perspective Of Sustainable Development Criteria Concerning Revitalization Efforts In Jackson, Mississippi, Kenneth Barry White
Conversation Of Values: A Community Perspective Of Sustainable Development Criteria Concerning Revitalization Efforts In Jackson, Mississippi, Kenneth Barry White
Theses and Dissertations
Jackson, Mississippi is currently undergoing a revitalization movement in an attempt to revive its blighted downtown core. While physical development is crucial to revival of the downtown landscape, the cultural landscape must also be considered. I hypothesized that developers, business owners, and residents working or living in and around downtown Jackson would report differing desires, positions, and values concerning four elements of sustainable development: cultural, economic, political, and environmental. Ultimately, the hypothesis was refuted according to the quantitative data analysis. However, there were different understandings within the qualitative data where the substance of this research project can be found. These …
The Influence Of Cyclic Pressure And Angiotensin Ii On The Biomechanical Properties Of Aortic Heart Valves, Valtresa Shena Myles
The Influence Of Cyclic Pressure And Angiotensin Ii On The Biomechanical Properties Of Aortic Heart Valves, Valtresa Shena Myles
Theses and Dissertations
Hypertension, a risk factor for aortic valve stenosis, increases transvalvular load and can elicit extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. Elevated cyclic pressure and the vasoactive agent angiotensin II (Ang II) both promote collagen synthesis, an early hallmark of aortic sclerosis. It was hypothesized that increased collagen production induced by elevated pressure conditions or the presence of Ang II would affect the mechanical properties of leaflet tissue by decreasing extensibility. Porcine aortic valve leaflets were exposed to pressure conditions of increasing magnitude with and without Ang II. Biaxial mechanical testing was performed to determine peak stretch. Collagen content was determined using a …

Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this research is to determine the effects of particle size reduction and chemical pretreatment with strong base oxidizers on the effectiveness of the electrokinetic remediation of wood waste contaminated with chromated copper arsenate. Selection of an oxidative chemical pretreatment solution involved an initial screening between three pre-selected chemicals followed by optimization of oxidative chemical solution strengths and solid to liquid ratios. Samples of each of the three particle sizes were chemically treated with the final oxidative pretreatment and loaded into electrokinetic units where a direct current was applied for approximately fifty days. Similar experiments were performed without …
Techniques For Li-Bdn Synthesis For Hybrid Microarchitectural Simulation, Tyler S. Harris
Techniques For Li-Bdn Synthesis For Hybrid Microarchitectural Simulation, Tyler S. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Computer designers rely upon near-cycle-accurate microarchitectural simulation to explore the design space of new systems. Unfortunately, such simulators are becoming increasingly slow as systems become more complex. Hybrid simulators which offload some of the simulation work onto FPGAs can increase the speed; however, such simulators must be automatically synthesized or the time to design them becomes prohibitive. Furthermore, FPGA implementations of simulators may require multiple FPGA clock cycles to implement behavior that takes place within one simulated clock cycle, making correct arbitrary composition of simulator components impossible and limiting the amount of hardware concurrency which can be achieved. Latency-Insensitive Bounded …

Salt Marsh Sediment Biogeochemical Response To The Bp Deepwater Horizon Blowout (Skiff Island, La, And Cat Island, Marsh Point And Saltpan Island, Ms), Calista Lee Guthrie
Salt Marsh Sediment Biogeochemical Response To The Bp Deepwater Horizon Blowout (Skiff Island, La, And Cat Island, Marsh Point And Saltpan Island, Ms), Calista Lee Guthrie
Theses and Dissertations
The impact of the Deepwater Horizon blowout on coastal wetlands can be understood through investigating carbon loading and microbial activity in salt marsh sediments. Carbon influx causes pore water sulfide to increase in wetland sediment, making it toxic and inhospitable to marsh vegetation. High sulfide levels due to increased microbial activity can lead to plant browning and mortality. Preliminary analyses at Marsh Point, Mississippi indicated that sulfate reducing bacteria are more active in contaminated marsh, producing sulfide concentrations 100x higher than in noncontaminated marsh. Sediment electrode profiles, hydrocarbon contamination, and microbial community profiles were measured at three additional locations to …

Possible Causes Of Testicular Germ Cell Tumor And Its Association With Male Infertility, Wael Ahmed Badran
Possible Causes Of Testicular Germ Cell Tumor And Its Association With Male Infertility, Wael Ahmed Badran
Theses and Dissertations
Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) are thought to arise during early embryogenesis due to the arrest of germ cell differentiation at primordial germ cells (PGCs) or gonocytes. Oxidative stress (OS) is implicated in cancer development as a factor leading to DNA damage. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) -induced instability occurs as a series of progressive steps. The cell has several defense mechanisms against the deleterious effect of ROS (e.g. antioxidants and DNA repair). When the defense mechanisms are exhausted by increasing OS, DNA damage leads to genomic instability with subsequent mutations that can be transmitted during cell division. On the other …
Development Of Safe And Efficacious Live Attenuated Edwardsiella Ictaluri Vaccines Against Enteric Septicemia Of Catfish, Neeti Dahal
Theses and Dissertations
Edwardsiella ictaluri is the causative agent of enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), which is the most economically important disease of farm-raised channel catfish. E. ictaluri is considered a facultative intracellular pathogen like other well-known species in the Enterobacteriaceae, and it is capable of surviving inside channel catfish neutrophils and macrophages. Its ability to survive inside neutrophils and macrophages has made the development of an effective vaccine against ESC particularly challenging. The goal is to develop a safe, efficacious live attenuated ESC vaccine that is practical and economically beneficial to catfish producers. In this study, single and combination of mutations in …
