The Efficacy Of A Spot-On Pesticide Against Ectoparasites Affecting Poultry In Mississippi, Kevin Steven Maschek

Theses and Dissertations

Ectoparasites are a common occurrence in backyard and commercial chickens and present a severe health challenge in certain circumstances. The accurate identification of the parasite is important in properly treating and preventing re-infestation. The feeding behavior of the pest species and management factors of the chicken affect outcomes of different types of treatment strategies. Most commercial products come in dusts, fogs, mists and sprays. The novel use of a topical spot-on pesticide can provide efficient adulticidal activity against stick tight fleas (Echidnophaga gallinacea) and bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) associated with poultry in Mississippi.

Revision Of The Melanoplus Scudderi (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Melanoplinae) Species Group And A Preliminary Investigation Into The Grasshopper Fauna Of The Grasslands Of The Southeastern United States, Jovonn Grady Hill

Theses and Dissertations

The Melanoplus scudderi species group, when erected by Blatchley, contained six species. The revision of the group presented here describes 21 new species and establishes the Melanoplus carnegiei group, all of which are associated with grasslands in the Southeast. Analysis of DNA barcoding data, suggest that the technique does not adequately delineate species based on the morphological concepts presented here, but did produce three broad mitochondrial DNA clades that correspond to the Apalachicola and Mississippi River discontinuity phylogeographic pattern displayed by several other organisms in the Southeastern United States. This pattern is attributed to vicariant events resulting from Pleistocene glaciation. …

Soil Resource And Production Dynamics Of A Tree-Grass Intercropping System Managed Across Gradients Of Interspecific Competition, Kurt Joseph Krapfl May 2015

Soil Resource And Production Dynamics Of A Tree-Grass Intercropping System Managed Across Gradients Of Interspecific Competition, Kurt Joseph Krapfl

Theses and Dissertations

Belowground competition presents a threat to the production and sustainability of tree-grass ecosystems. Management scenarios designed to optimize the spatial and temporal distribution of soil resources will improve resource-use efficiency and promote greater co-production. We conducted three experiments to assess competition dynamics between loblolly pine and switchgrass. In a three-year field trial, loblolly pine and switchgrass were intercropped across varying competitive intensities. Interspecific competition decreased loblolly pine annual growth; however, establishing vegetation exclusion zones surrounding pines largely mitigated these effects. Switchgrass yields were less affected by interspecific competition compared to pines and land equivalency ratios indicated that with proper management …

Characterization Of The Relationship Of Ros And Bcl-2 Family Members During Streptococcus Pneumoniae And Staphylococcus Aureus Challenge, Katie Elizabeth Heath

Theses and Dissertations

Apoptosis of innate immune is an important part of proper resolution of infection and inflammation. One major protein involved in apoptosis is p53 up-regulated mediator of apoptosis (PUMA). We hypothesize apoptosis induced by the p53/PUMA pathway is initially triggered by ROS thereby preventing neutrophils from defaulting to another form of cell death or remaining in a state of hyper-activation that is harmful to the host. HL-60 granulocytic cells were stimulated with the Streptococcus pneumoniae strain SpxB-. Despite inducing both ROS and DNA damage, PUMA transcription and subsequent apoptosis appeared to be independent of both factors. However, PUMA is still relevant …

Construction Bidding And The Winner's Curse, Muaz Osman Elubeir Ahmed May 2015

Construction Bidding And The Winner's Curse, Muaz Osman Elubeir Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

In the construction industry, the winner’s curse occurs when the winning contractor has underestimated the project’s true cost. Using a game and auction theory approach, this study aims to analyze - and potentially reduce - industry exposure to the effects of the winner's curse in construction bidding. A simulation model for single and multi-stage bidding processes was developed and analyzed an actual dataset of California Department of Transportation projects. The majority of general contractors and sub-contractors suffer from the winner's curse in both single and multi-stage bidding environments. The multi-stage bidding environment incurs more losses than the single-stage bidding environment. …

Theoretically Tested Remediation In Response To Insect Resistance To Bt Corn And Bt Cotton: A New Paradigm, Jeannette C. Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

Various models of density dependence predicted different evolutionary outcomes for Helicoverpa zea, Diabrotica virgifera, and Ostrinia nubilalis using simple and complex resistance evolution models, different dose assumptions and refuge proportions. Increasing available refuge increased durabilities of pyramided Plant-Incorporated-Protectants (PIPs), especially between 1-5%. For some models of density dependence and pests, additional refuge resulted in faster adaptation rates. Significant considerations should be given to a pest’s intra-specific competition in simple and complex theoretical models when designing insect resistance management plans. Life-history, refuge, and dose characteristics of a PIP had different effects on the adaptation rate of a generic pest of Bt, …

Validating Pasture Heaves As An Equine Model Of Neutrophilic Asthma: A Systems Biology Approach, Lauren Ashley Bright

Theses and Dissertations

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by reversible airway obstruction, persistent airway hyperresponsiveness, chronic airway inflammation, and chronic airway remodeling. Most adult asthmatics have neutrophilic airway inflammation that correlates to increasing disease severity, and fail to respond to corticosteroid therapies that mitigate other asthma endotypes. Accordingly, there is a need to investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for neutrophilic asthma. Pasture heaves, a respiratory disease affecting horses housed on pasture in conditions of high heat and humidity, shares the aforementioned characteristics of human asthma, including neutrophilic inflammation. The cause is undetermined, but genetic propensities for reactivity to seasonally inhaled, pasture-associated, …
