Utilization Of Antibody-Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles, Dynamic Light Scattering And Sers In Influenza Virus Detection, Yen Hoang Lai
Utilization Of Antibody-Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles, Dynamic Light Scattering And Sers In Influenza Virus Detection, Yen Hoang Lai
Theses and Dissertations
Influenza A H3N2, H1N1, and influenza B viruses primarily cause winter illness in humans, leading to significant morbidity and mortality in the population of the very young, the elderly, and people with chronic disease. In addition to the regular seasonal epidemics of influenza, influenza pandemics associated with the emergence of new influenza A strains are threatening due to high levels of mortality, social disruption, and economic losses. These novel strains are not affected by the human immunity developed to older strains of influenza, therefore can spread readily and infect a vast number of people. The most recent flu pandemic outbreak …
Life History, Oviposition Characteristics, And Management Of The Ozark Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas Phaeton Ozarkae), Stephen Robertson
Life History, Oviposition Characteristics, And Management Of The Ozark Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas Phaeton Ozarkae), Stephen Robertson
Theses and Dissertations
The Ozark Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton ozarkae Masters) is an understudied nymphalid butterfly endemic to the Ozarks that specializes on False Foxglove (Aureolaria sp.) as the larval food plant. Few studies have focused on this animal and much of what is known has been derived from studies of the eastern subspecies (Euhpydryas phaeton phaeton Drury). Genetic evidence shows only slight variation between subspecies, but critical ecological differences are found between the two taxa. Here I present an in-depth life history with respect to general ecology and offer evidence towards species identity. Oviposition behavior (search and egg-site selection) is a key …
Novel Methodologies For Locomotion Mode Identification In Lower Limb Prosthesis, Taimoor Afzal
Novel Methodologies For Locomotion Mode Identification In Lower Limb Prosthesis, Taimoor Afzal
Theses and Dissertations
Lower limbs enable human beings to move in an uncomplicated manner. They support the weight of the body, provide postural stability while moving the body forward and even move it backwards. Regardless of the environment these limbs have the capacity to adapt to any terrain. However, disability as a result of amputation may lead a person to live a dismal life. The deficiency of the ability to walk can have undesirable effect on the amputee from both the physical and psychological point of view. Use of prosthetic devices helps in overcoming this deficiency. The use of prostheses goes back to …

Modeling The Antipodal Connectivity Structure Of Neural Communities, Bayazit Karaman
Modeling The Antipodal Connectivity Structure Of Neural Communities, Bayazit Karaman
Theses and Dissertations
Positive electrical charges in a solid conductor generate an outward electrical field emanating from the charged conductor. In this context, overall cognitive decisions, which were initiated by the electrical activities of neural modules at different parts of the cerebrum, are completed at the highest spatial and hierarchical level. EEG systems are capable of detecting these electrical activities, however, a unified mathematical model of these highest-level cognitive interactions has not yet been stated. Recent studies support the theory that brain is composed of modules and certain nodes establish connections between the modules. Within the scope of this study, the highest spatial …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Vanillyl Alcohol Based Thermosetting Epoxy Resins, Eric Hernandez
Theses and Dissertations
Lignin is a natural and abundant renewable material composed of crosslinked phenylpropenyl units that when strategically depolymerized could potentially yield renewable bio-based aromatic building blocks for applications in high-performance thermosetting epoxy resins. Vanillyl alcohol, a lignin derived aromatic diol, is a potential platform chemical for the production of renewable bisphenols and epoxy thermosets. A new bio-based bisphenol (bisguaiacol) was synthesized via electrophilic aromatic condensation of vanillyl alcohol and guaiacol, from which diglycidyl ether of bisguaiacol (DGEBG) was prepared via epoxidation with epichlorohydrin. The thermomechanical properties of DGEBG blended with a commercial BPA-based epoxy resin and cured with a diamine were investigated …
Factors Influencing Honey Bee Abundance Across Agricultural Landscapes In The Midsouth, Daniel Adam Whalen
Factors Influencing Honey Bee Abundance Across Agricultural Landscapes In The Midsouth, Daniel Adam Whalen
Theses and Dissertations
Populations of honey bees have declined worldwide in recent years. One suspected cause is the widespread use of pesticides in agriculture. Experiments were conducted to examine potential exposure routes of pesticides to honey bees in the Midsouth. Neonicotinoid seed treatment compounds were studied to determine the rate at which they drift during planting and the rate at which they diminish in crop tissue during crop development. Honey bee foraging activity in Midsouth crops was observed to determine when and at what densities foraging honey bees could be active during pesticide applications. This project was designed to aid in understanding the …
Performance Analysis And Evaluation Of Divisible Load Theory And Dynamic Loop Scheduling Algorithms In Parallel And Distributed Environments, Mahadevan Balasubramaniam
Performance Analysis And Evaluation Of Divisible Load Theory And Dynamic Loop Scheduling Algorithms In Parallel And Distributed Environments, Mahadevan Balasubramaniam
Theses and Dissertations
High performance parallel and distributed computing systems are used to solve large, complex, and data parallel scientific applications that require enormous computational power. Data parallel workloads which require performing similar operations on different data objects, are present in a large number of scientific applications, such as N-body simulations and Monte Carlo simulations, and are expressed in the form of loops. Data parallel workloads that lack precedence constraints are called arbitrarily divisible workloads, and are amenable to easy parallelization. Load imbalance that arise from various sources such as application, algorithmic, and systemic characteristics during the execution of scientific applications degrades performance. …
Protein Therapy For The Treatment Of Vascular Calcification In Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease, Janice L. Cunningham
Protein Therapy For The Treatment Of Vascular Calcification In Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease, Janice L. Cunningham
Theses and Dissertations
Premature death from cardiovascular disease is especially high in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Vascular calcification is a potent risk factor for developing cardiac-related morbidity and mortality and is especially prominent within the CKD population. Deficiencies in serum levels of fetuin-A as well as inadequate production of matrix Gla protein (MGP) correlate inversely with the extent of vascular calcification and time spent on dialysis. Fetuin-A is a well-known systematic regulator of bone metabolism and MGP is a local antagonist of bone forming proteins. To meet the clinical need of at-risk patients prone to cardiac-related mortality. We propose a targeted …
Investigations Of The Stability Of Pyrolysis Oil During High Temperature Treatment, Laibao Zhang
Investigations Of The Stability Of Pyrolysis Oil During High Temperature Treatment, Laibao Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Pyrolysis oil is produced from biomass when a feedstock is rapidly heated in a non-oxidizing environment during a short residence time. While pyrolysis oil is inexpensive, major issues prevent the facile use of this oil product ‘as produced’. Principally, since the rapid condensation results in a product not in thermodynamic equilibrium, the oil components continue to react until equilibrium is reached. Understanding how and why these reactions—including polymerization—occur in pyrolysis oil is important in designing treatments to stabilize or transform pyrolysis oil before further upgrading. Physical and chemical changes in pyrolysis oils are investigated as a function of temperature and …
A Functional Genomics Analysis Of Glycine Max Vesicle Membrane Fusion Genes In Relation To Infection By Heterodera Glycine, Keshav Sharma
A Functional Genomics Analysis Of Glycine Max Vesicle Membrane Fusion Genes In Relation To Infection By Heterodera Glycine, Keshav Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
Soybean cyst nematode (SCN), a major pathogen of soybean worldwide, causes huge losses in soybean production. Various approaches including cloning of genes to combat this devastating disease help to better understand the cellular function and immune responses of plants. Membrane fusion genes are the important regulatory parts of vesicular transport system, which works through packaging of intracellular compounds and delivering them to apoplast or nematode feeding sites to induce an incompatible reaction. The incompatible nature of membrane fusion proteins such as SNAP25, Munc18, Syntaxin, Synaptobrevin, NSF, Synaptotagmin and alpha-SNAP are conserved in eukaryotes and regulate the intracellular function to combat …
Allelopathy In The Non-Native Macrophyte, Myriophyllum Spicatum And Its Influence On Trophic Dynamics In Aquatic Systems, Daniel J. Sullivan
Allelopathy In The Non-Native Macrophyte, Myriophyllum Spicatum And Its Influence On Trophic Dynamics In Aquatic Systems, Daniel J. Sullivan
Theses and Dissertations
Non-native macrophytes structurally impact aquatic assemblages, yet little is known regarding how they influence energy pathways in freshwater ecosystems. Allelopathy in Eurasian watermilfoil- Myriophyllum spicatum has been shown to target basal epiphytic organisms resulting in differences in assemblage structure of colonizing epiphyton between M. spicatum and native M. sibiricum. I conducted a growth chamber experiment to investigate the hypothesis that differences in assemblage structure of colonizing epiphyton between these two macrophytes influence trophic dynamics within aquatic systems. My data suggest M. spicatum produces higher concentrations of allelochemicals, resulting in a more diverse epiphytic assemblage compared to M. sibiricum. This could …
An Examination Of Net Primary Production In Southern Appalachian Wetlands, Mike Maguigan
An Examination Of Net Primary Production In Southern Appalachian Wetlands, Mike Maguigan
Theses and Dissertations
Southern Appalachian wetlands have yet to be studied in terms of net primary production (NPP), thus few studies have been conducted to examine what environmental factors have relationships with NPP. To that end, this research investigates several facets of southern Appalachian wetland production. The research was divided into three studies. The first study was conducted to answer the question of what environmental factors have relationships with NPP. It appears that stream discharge and annual precipitation had the strongest relationships with NPP (r = 0.91, p <0.05 and r = 0.81, p <0.05, respectively), yet both factors showed multicolinearity (r = 0.97, p <0.05). The strong relationships between hydrologic factors and NPP is similar to montane wetlands in the western United States. The second study was conducted to examine the relationship between water chemistry and NPP. Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), and pH were examined in order to determine if any of the aforementioned factors had a relationship with NPP. Neither Ca (r = -0.34, p = 0.0835) nor Mg (r =-0.38, p = 0.0535) had strong relationships with NPP, though pH (r = -0.66, p <0.05) had a strong negative relationship with NPP. The acidity of the stream water, driven by the acid rain in the southern Appalachians, creates enhanced conditions for wetland plants to grow. The third study was conducted to establish which vegetation index was best for estimating NPP from proximally and remotely sensed data. The findings suggest that VARIRed Edge was best for examining NPP at the in situ level, NDVI was best for examining NPP at the airborne level, and the DVI was the best for examining NPP at the satellite level. NPP in southern Appalachian wetlands is driven by the chemistry, specifically the pH, of stream discharge and annual precipitation and can be monitored by NDVI using NAIP data or DVI using Landsat data. The examination of NPP in southern Appalachians in response to environmental factors and water chemistry along with the examination of vegetation indices at three levels of platforms will help to monitor and manage these rare and unique ecosystems in the future.

There are conflicting results from previous research evaluating the effects of dietary omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on IgG concentration of colostrum, milk and foal blood. No research has been done on the effect of omega-3 fat supplementation on the placental efficiency of horses or the nitrite concentrations of the placenta as an indicator of vascularization. This study examined the effect of dietary omega-3 supplementation on composition of milk, mare and foal serum and if it will result in transfer of fatty acid in utero as well as providing the foal with adequate IgG concentrations in the milk and colostrum. Omega-3 …
Evolutionary And Ecological Causes And Consequences Of Trophic Niche Variation In Ursids, Diana Jean Raper Lafferty
Evolutionary And Ecological Causes And Consequences Of Trophic Niche Variation In Ursids, Diana Jean Raper Lafferty
Theses and Dissertations
Individual variation and fitness are the cornerstones of evolution by natural selection. The trophic niche represents an important source of phenotypic variation on which natural selection can act. Although individual variation is fundamental to species-level ecological and evolutionary change, individual variation is often ignored in population-level approaches to wildlife ecology, conservation and management. Failing to link individual resource use to fitness or to biological outcomes related to fitness limits us to managing for the average resource needs of a population, which may be insufficient for protecting the diversity of resource use within populations and the underlying eco-evolutionary processes that generate …

Comparative Evaluation Of Three Different Methodologies For Determining Embryo Temperature In Broiler Hatching Eggs During Incubation, Opeyemi Christiana Olojede
Comparative Evaluation Of Three Different Methodologies For Determining Embryo Temperature In Broiler Hatching Eggs During Incubation, Opeyemi Christiana Olojede
Theses and Dissertations
Temperature is the most important among several factors that are needed for optimum avian embryonic development during incubation. Previous studies have implied that incubation temperature may have an impact on chick quality and post hatch performance. The use and accuracy of different methodologies for the estimation of embryonic temperature and eggshell conductance values during incubation were determined in three trials. Results suggested that air cell temperature using transponders may be used for the estimation of embryo temperature from 12 through 19 days of incubation and the subsequent calculation of eggshell conductance and specific eggshell conductance values. A final trial was …
The Effect Of Oxygen On Bile Resistance In Listeria Monocytogenes, Morgan Layne Wright
The Effect Of Oxygen On Bile Resistance In Listeria Monocytogenes, Morgan Layne Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive facultative anaerobe that is the causative agent of the disease listeriosis and is responsible for nearly 20% of all food-related deaths in the United States. The ability of this bacterium to cause infections is proposed to correlate to its ability to resist the bactericidal properties of bile acids found in bile. Bile resistance mechanisms have exhibited increased activity under anaerobic conditions. Therefore, we hypothesized that limited oxygen could enhance the bile resistance of L. monocytogenes. Upon survival analysis, viability for virulent strains F2365, EGD-e, and 10403S increased upon 10% porcine bile extract under anaerobic conditions. …

The Gastrointestinal Tract Microbiota Of The Obligate Bamboo Foragers, The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca) And The Red Panda (Ailurus Fulgens), Candace Lareine Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Previously, the exact phylogenetic relationship between the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and the red panda (Ailurus fulgens) has been unclear, but with the advent of molecular sequencing technologies, these two animals are now known to be distantly related. Although taxonomically distinct, these two panda species have several things in common, primarily their almost exclusively bamboo diet, but also their similar physical adaptations to their diet and their sympatry in some locations. What was unknown was if their similarities also extended to their gastrointestinal tract (GIT) microbiota. Using next-generation 16S rRNA parallel sequencing technologies, we uncovered several factors that impact bacterial …
The Impact Of Pyruvate Oxidase (Spxb) On The Release Of The Toxin Pneumolysin In Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Joseph Colby Bryant
The Impact Of Pyruvate Oxidase (Spxb) On The Release Of The Toxin Pneumolysin In Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Joseph Colby Bryant
Theses and Dissertations
Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a major human pathogen and commensal organism of the nasopharynx. A major virulence factor of the pneumococcus is the cholesterol dependent, pore forming cytolysin pneumolysin. This toxin acts extracellularly, but the mechanism of release has not been well elucidated. Despite being a catalase negative organism, the pneumococcus produces up to millimolar concentrations of hydrogen peroxide through the activity of pyruvate oxidase. In all strains analyzed, deletion of the pyruvate oxidase gene yielded a significant reduction in the amount of PLY observed in the supernatant via western blot. A single strain, WU2 was also observed to have …
