Theses and Dissertations
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most prevalent class of lung cancer and the most common cancer worldwide. NSCLC accounts for 85% of total lung cancer cases and leads to the most cancer-related deaths worldwide. Micro RNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are gene regulatory elements that play crucial roles in cancer biology such as cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, and metastasis. Understanding the gene regulatory elements that influence cancer biology is critical for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A systems approach can help simulate interactions between these elements. In this study 110 microarray samples from NSCLC patients were analyzed …

Theses and Dissertations
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a versatile biopolymer that is widely used as a biomaterial. However, one of the major issues which limits its further application in tissue engineering purposes is its hydrophobic nature and poor cellular interaction. Modification of PLA properties can be achieved by polymer blending techniques. Polymer blending is a simple yet attractive method to combine and optimize polymeric physical properties of interest. In this study, an antibacterial electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds, with diameters around 400–1000 nm, were prepared by physical blending PLA with a hydrophylic biopolymer, cellulose acetate (CA). In this stage, PLA was used as the main …

A Hybrid Deep Learning Approach For Texture Analysis, Hussein Adly
Theses and Dissertations
Texture classification is a problem that has various applications such as remote sensing and forest species recognition. Solutions tend to be custom fit to the dataset used but fails to generalize. The Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in combination with Support Vector Machine (SVM) form a robust selection between powerful invariant feature extractor and accurate classifier. The fusion of classifiers shows the stability of classification among different datasets and slight improvement compared to state of the art methods. The classifiers are fused using confusion matrix after independent training of each using the same training set, then put to test. Statistical information …
In Silico Screening, Analysis, And Modelling For A Novel Anticancer Peptide, Youssef Abdou
In Silico Screening, Analysis, And Modelling For A Novel Anticancer Peptide, Youssef Abdou
Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is currently one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Most anticancer therapies rely on small molecule drugs (<0.5 kDa). As with all small molecule drugs, chemotherapy is highly toxic and presents many off-target side effects. Peptide drugs offer improved specificity and are cheaper and more accessible to manufacture. In this study, we have developed a support vector machine (SVM) model in order to detect peptide sequences with potential anticancer activity through scanning the Red Sea Metagenomic library. Furthermore, we conducted an in silico study in order to analyze one of the peptides returned by the SVM pipeline and assessed its cytotoxicity and the mode of cell death by conducting MTT and Annexin V staining assays, respectively. We observed that the selected anticancer peptide contains the C-terminal portion of the homeodomain structure, of human Pax6, an antennapedia homeodomain region, and can bind DNA. Furthermore, we observed dose-response cytotoxicity of HepG2 cells with our peptide. No such cytotoxicity was observed in HeLa cells; a morphological change, however, was observed. We examined the cytotoxicity of our drug against 1BR-hTERT normal skin cells. Our peptide drug induced dose-dependent cytotoxicity that was markedly weaker than that of cancer treated cells. Together our data illustrates the isolation of one peptide drug candidate from the AUC Red Sea metagenomic library; furthermore, we were able to observe the selective dose-dependent reduction of HepG2 cell viability

Theses and Dissertations
Periodontal regeneration, especially guided tissue regeneration (GTR), is one of the expanding applications in the field of tissue engineering. GTR barriers serve an exceptional function in healing various periodontal diseases such as gingivitis, periodontitis and loss of alveolar bone. Healing of periodontal pockets is somehow challenging as epithelial cells originated from the gingiva fill the site of defect and no regeneration takes place. Complete cell occlusion is a critical characteristic in case of pockets healing to obstruct gingival tissue growth, which performed via GTR membrane. Various materials were investigated for the synthesis of GTR membranes with collagen being the desired …

Investigating The Use Of Solid Waste As Alternative Fuels In Egypt, Fatma Adel Shahat
Theses and Dissertations
Every year Egypt produces enormous amounts of solid waste that reached 89 million tons/year in 2012 and still in continuous increase. As most experts agree, waste can be a hidden treasure for the nation, if it is fully exploited. Indeed, solid waste can be reused, recycled, or even recovered as a source of energy instead of simply being disposed in dumpsters and landfills. Given the need for alternative sources of energy, energy crisis, and waste management problems in Egypt, waste-to-energy (WTE) seems to be an optimum solution for both problems: energy and waste disposal. In the first phase of this …

The Use Of Egyptian Spoken Arabic In Modern Egyptian Novels, Esraa Essa
The Use Of Egyptian Spoken Arabic In Modern Egyptian Novels, Esraa Essa
Theses and Dissertations
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the language of novels and written literature and is thus defined as a “High” variety. Nevertheless, young Egyptian authors of the new generation prefer to use a mix between Egyptian colloquial Arabic (ECA) and MSA as a medium for creating a new spirit in novels. In fact, the sharp lines between (MSA) and colloquial Egyptian (ECA) in the Modern Egyptian Novels have begun to blur (Badawi, 1973; 2012). Badawi (1973) proposed a five-level continuum in which each level gradually merges into the next. Arabic in Egypt encompasses five levels of language: (fusha al-turath and Qur’an) …
Resurrecting Eden: Inaugural British Narration And Policy Of Iraq, Timothy Kennett
Resurrecting Eden: Inaugural British Narration And Policy Of Iraq, Timothy Kennett
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines Britain's use of technology in developing Mesopotamia. British imaginations of Mesopotamia as Eden or El Dorado, reified by a multiplicity of travel literature, archaeological digs, and geographic societies, formed the first half of a violent dialectic that granted divine right and responsibility to the British. Instead, colonialists claimed that Mesopotamia's inhabitants squandered its primordial potential through neglect and mismanagement. These justifications fueled British attempts to develop Mesopotamia, irrigation engineers designing floodgates for the Tigris and Euphrates while agriculturalists created new strains of wheat that would flourish in its climate. But technology was more than development. It formed the …

Passive Aeration Of Wastewater Using Tray Aerators, Ayman Mostafa El-Zahaby
Theses and Dissertations
Passive aeration units in water and wastewater treatment are aeration units that operate without the need for electric energy. They depend on dropping the water through the aerator, while increasing the surface area to volume ratio, and thus increasing the oxygen mass diffused into water. The passive units include cascade aerators, and tray aerators. On the contrary to cascade and spray aerators, tray aerators require a much smaller area for their installation. While researching the design of tray aerators, a shortage of literature pertaining to the topic was observed. The research objective is to develop a model for the design …

Toward A Model Of 12-Step Engagement: Predicting Recovery Involvement In Narcotics Anonymous, Hillary L. Howrey
Theses and Dissertations
Substance use disorders (SUDs) affect a significant portion of the population and are noteworthy public health concerns. Mutual help organizations (MHOs) such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are considered evidence-based practices for SUDs. Despite a growing body of research examining mechanisms of change in MHOs, relatively few investigations of 12-step organizations have been theory-driven. Theory-based models of recovery provide a more comprehensive view of the range of individual factors affecting individuals in recovery and how and why they might engage in recovery-related behaviors. Stress and coping theory fills a gap in explaining how improvements occur as a result of …
