Social Support And Sense Of Coherence As Predictors Of Spousal Grief During The First Few Months Of Bereavement., Tracy Lynn Johnson

Twenty-six male and female spouses of patients served by a small hospice in the upper Midwest served as subjects for this dissertation. At the time of referral of their terminally ill spouse they completed measures of Sense of Coherence and social support. Their spouses died from an anticipated death, cancer, and they were contacted by phone within the first three months of bereavement. At that time, measures of grief, depression, anxiety, and anger were obtained.This first hypothesis, that social support would influence bereavement outcome (spouses with more social support would experience less grief, depression, anxiety, and anger than spouses with …

Spousal Bereavement In The Second Year: Differences In Bereavement Outcome Among The Rural And Urban Elderly., Laurie Ann Brustad

Twenty-five bereaved rural elderly subjects (10 males, 15 females) were compared with twenty-five bereaved urban elderly subjects (16 females, 9 males) in the second year after the death of a spouse. All subjects were drawn from a Hospice population. The rural elderly were found to have higher levels of depression, unresolved grief, and poorer health than the urban elderly as measured by the Multiscore Depression Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Wahler Physical Symptoms Inventory, and the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief. The purpose of this investigation was to develop an instrument to test the theory of reasoned action (Fishbein & Ajzen, 1975) in a new behavioral domain the health promotive behaviors of geriatric nurse practitioners (GNPs). The two behavioral categories included in the study were health assessment and health teaching, each with its individual index of actions.

A questionnaire was developed to examine the beliefs of a sample of 200 certified geriatric nurse practitioners and to test the relationships of the theoretical model. Names of the subjects were randomly selected from the American Nurses' Association 1989 list of certified GNPs. Ninety-four …

Within the last two decades, the United States has witnessed the growth of a phenomenon which the media has referred to as "The New Age Movement". This multi-faceted social pattern includes astrology, meditation, mysticism, and eastern philosophies, the popularity of which have increased significantly in the 1980's. This thesis is a case study of the "New Age Movement". First, I develop a descriptive model of the key ideological themes and organizational structures of this social pattern. This study examined hospital characteristics that affected the differential in hospital mortality, while controlling for the effect of community attributes. Analytical models for the determinants of hospital mortality were formulated and validated through an empirical examination of 243 hospitals that had higher or lower mortality rates than expected for Medicare beneficiaries. The dependent variable for this study was death rates for 1984 Medicare patients in united states hospitals released in 1986 by the Health Care Financing Administration.

Structural equation models that portray the causal relation between organizational constructs and hospital mortality rate were formulated. This causal model was empirically validated. …

Many authors have expressed the opinion that the resolution of grief requires the open expression of the emotions accompanying grief. While this need for emotional discharge has been mentioned frequently, there has been no empirical evidence of a connection between emotional discharge and successful grief work. This study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that recently bereaved individuals who reported more emotional discharge behaviors would have a more positive resolution of their grief at four months post-bereavement.
