The Diffusion Of Public Defenders In Virginia: A Study In Organization Adaption And The Relationships Between Values, Decisionmaking Processes, And Organizational Output, Cyril Woodvil Miller, Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Research into indigent defense issues has shown that the growth in the use of public defenders has been accompanied by increased bureaucratization and has paralleled the expansion of the right to counsel and the "due process revolution." The goal of this research is the development and testing of a model of organization adaptation which explains for public defender offices in Virginia the evolution of multiple and contradictory organizational goals, the means by which they balance conflicting values and goals, and the effect of resulting decision making processes on organizational output. The basic research question addressed is the relationship between values, …

Competency For Execution: Factors Affecting The Judgement Of Forensic Psychologists, Sharon Brown Dec 1992

Competency For Execution: Factors Affecting The Judgement Of Forensic Psychologists, Sharon Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The determination of a death-row inmate's competency to be executed is a compelling ethical issue for mental health professionals. It has been suggested that forensic psychologists who offer such services to the courts may tend to approach the problem of determining competency by diverse and unstandardized methods (Grisson, 1986). Heilbrun (1986) has questioned the effect of the psychologist's potential death penalty bias on the outcome of the evaluation process.

Death penalty attitudes have a demonstrated effect on the decision-making processes of capital jurors who are death-qualified, (willing to impose the death penalty under some circumstances) or excludable (unwilling to consider …

The Child Witness: The Effects Of Videotaped Versus Live Testimony On Juror Perceptions Of Guilt., Sharon Kaye Hagen

Theses and Dissertations

A total of 192 jury-qualified subjects participated in this study which compared the effects of a child's videotaped deposition on juror's perceptions of a defendant's guilt to live in-court testimony. A three hour trial, videotaped from a simulated case of child physical use being conducted for the Trial Advocacy Class of the University of North Dakota Law school, was shown to all subjects. A separate deposition of the child's testimony, identical to the live testimony, was also videotaped and shown to half the subjects. Eight juries viewed the videotapes of the trial with the child testifying on the witness stand …

The Development Of In-Service Training For Teachers And Counselors Working With Adult Homeless Students, Dagmar F. Pelzer

Theses and Dissertations

The number of homeless persons in the United States has been increasing rapidly over the past few years. Nationwide estimates range between three hundred thousand and three million homeless, with a ten to thirty percent annual increase. Efforts to reduce homelessness consist primarily of the provision of housing and employment.

Dade County Public Schools initiated educational programs for homeless adults in February of 1988. Between 1988 and 1991, over three thousand homeless adults were enrolled in part-time and full-time academic and vocational programs. In-service training for teachers and counselors working with the homeless needed to be developed and implemented because …

Perceived Severity Of Informal Sanctions: A Case Study Of Convicted Dui Offenders In Cass County, North Dakota, Terry D. Stratton

Theses and Dissertations

It Is estimated that alcohol plays a factor in between 35 and 64 c'-rcent of all fatal crashes and between 6 and 25 percent for non-fatal accidents, resulting in alcohol .being involved in about half of the roughly 50,000 annual traffic fatalities in the United States. Clearly, drinking-and driving is a major contributor in both the severity and the frequency of traffic accidents.

Federal Narcotic Violators And The Dispositions Received Through The Courts With An Emphasis On Cocaine Offenders, Phyllis Rena Baker Jan 1988

Federal Narcotic Violators And The Dispositions Received Through The Courts With An Emphasis On Cocaine Offenders, Phyllis Rena Baker

Theses and Dissertations

The United states has been plagued with the problem of illicit drug use for many years. Drug abuse has continued to increase and is prevalent among all races and social classes of people. The question is what efforts have been or are being made in order to deter the influx of drugs into the country along with stopping the suppliers of these drugs and what has hindered the effectiveness of these efforts.

The theory of deterrence was applied to this problem because the model presumes that the punishment of criminal acts could deter potential offenders by making the negative consequences …

The Effects Of Athletic Participation And Self-Concept On Juvenile Misbehavior, Timothy G. Driscoll

Theses and Dissertations

Travis Hirshi's Social Control Theory proposes that delinquents fail to form or maintain a bond to society consisting of attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. This study investigates the relationships that exist between athletic participation, self-concept, and juvenile delinquency. Four hundred twenty-eight completed questionnaires were obtained from students in grades seven through nine from Central Junior High School in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Social Control Theory {attachment element) was examined as a viable predictor of differences in the relationship between elements of the bond, athletic participation, self-concept, and juvenile delinquency.

This study focuses on juvenile delinquency as it relates to the …

An Evaluation Of Two Training Programs Designed To Enable Hostages To Cope More Effectively With Captivity Stress, Thomas Strentz

Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, airline employees undergoing highly realistic but simulated captivity as hostages were given one of three types of prestress training programs. One group of subjects was given Problem (P)-focused training, which emphasized activities which would be useful in actively manipulating the stress situation. A second group was given Emotion (E)-focused training which emphasized techniques designed to help them directly modulate fear and anxiety associated with the situation. A third (control) group was given no specific stress management training. Retrospective data from the Ways of Coping Check List indicated that subjects tended to engage in the type of …

Attitudes Toward Rape And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Lynn White Eggers

Theses and Dissertations

In order to understand more fully the process of recovery from sexual assault, this study investigated the variables considered to be influential in that process, including the age of the victim, her marital status, the time elapsed since the assault, who the perpetrator was, and where the assault took place. In addition, the victim's beliefs about sexual assault were also assessed, using the Feminist Attitude Toward Rape Scale, as were her perceptions of society's beliefs. Recovery was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory, the Modified Fear Survey, and the Derogatis Symptom Check List.

The subjects were 30 women, ages 18 …

Level Of Marital Adjustment And Spiritual Well-Being Among Latter-Day Saints, Robert W. Reynolds Jan 1984

Level Of Marital Adjustment And Spiritual Well-Being Among Latter-Day Saints, Robert W. Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations

This research will focus specifically on SWB [spiritual well being] among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). By virtue of his membership in this denomination, the researcher is more familiar with the theology, religious life and traditions of the LDS than those of any other denomination. Latter-day Saint theology has been well defined, and because of a fundamental belief in the prophetic ability of a single leader of the church, the doctrine and practices of the Latter-day Saints are consistent throughout the United States and the world.
