The Arkansas Teacher Fair Dismissal Act provides the legal procedure for dismissing teachers from public schools in Arkansas. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of the Teacher Fair Dismissal Act on the employment practices of schools in Arkansas. The study examined the legislative intent of the Act, how the courts have refined the issues of the Act, the level of knowledge about the Act among principals, and perceptions of principals relating to the effect of the Act. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has initiated a research project that profiles the perpetrators of hostage and barricade incidents. This research is conducted using a questionnaire that is completed at incident conclusion. The questionnaire was provide .. by the FBI as part of a project called HOB AS (Hostage, Barricade, and Suicide). The HOBAS information is distributed electronically and in print to member law enforcement agencies. HOBAS information is used in this project as the main source of secondary data. This research study examined the effect of the Freirean Theory of Education on one alternative secondary education program for at-risk students in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The learning theory, curriculum, and instructional methods were examined to determine the extent of the influence of Paulo Freire's Theory of Education, the extent of practice, and the extent to which faculty, students, and community members think it should be practiced. National and regional substance use studies suggest that college students are frequent users of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. This study examines substance use at UND, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods, examining the predictive power of Hirschi’s social control theory in response to collegiate substance use. This research will provide a profile of student activities and beliefs associated with use or non-use, as well as the prevalence of use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.

The Utility Of Statement Validity Assessment In Differentiating Between False Reports And True Memories In Children., Marcia Moberg

This study was conducted to examine the utility of Statement Validity Assessment (SVA) and Criterion-Based Content Analysis (CBCA) in situations where children give a false report. Twenty-one children, aged 4–5, were interviewed about two true (parent-supplied) events and two false (experimenter-contrived) events eight times over a ten week period using the criterion set forth in SVA (Raskin & Esplin, 1991). The dependent variables were frequency of assent, CBCA scores, and narrative length. Across all three dependent measures, significant differences existed between true and false narratives such that frequency of assent was higher for true narratives, CBCA scores were higher and …

This action research study examines the attitude change among rural high school students regarding diversity and tolerance presented through a multicultural club. Fifty randomly selected students and parents of the high school were pre-tested using a survey instrument measuring needs assessment and an attitude profile. Data analysis was conducted using percentages of each of the four questions asked. The entire student body was then exposed to various multicultural facts and experiences promoted through a multicultural club. The present study seeks to establish data supporting convergent and concurrent validity of the Social Sexual Awareness Scale by correlating SSAS score with current status regarding competency to make the decision to engage in high risk sexual behavior as agreed by the IDT. The premise is that capacity to consent to high risk sexual behavior can be measured in a way that would enhance the decision making process of the court without detracting from its authority.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact mediation has in reducing violence in the school setting. Through the use of survey instrumentation, the researcher will gather feedback from disputants regarding the effectiveness of the program in resolving their problems. Along with a survey instrument, the researcher will conduct monthly mediation meetings. The purpose of these meetings is to gather information from the mediators in regards to both effective and ineffective mediations and ways to improve the total program.

It has been noted that some individuals seem to be chronically angry and hostile but experience little dysfunction in their lives because of that anger. On the other hand, other individuals experience high levels of anger around certain stimuli, experience dysfunction, and display problematic behaviors. Further, if an anger assessment is indicated and one of two such assessing instruments must be chosen, it would seem to be important to know which is most appropriate. Parents and other community citizens were empowered in educational change in two Arkansas communities through a process of participative decision making. The study circle, begun at Chautauqua in 1874, proved to be a new communication process for school-to-community relationships. Arkansas Friends for Better Schools, one of two state sponsors of the 1998 'Calling the Roll: Study Circles for Better Schools,' cooperated with Study Circles Resource Center and Southwest Educational Development Laboratory to implement the Study Circles program on education in five Arkansas communities in the fall of 1998. Consideration of cultural appropriateness in using Westem-European standardized intelligence measures with Native Americans for clinical and educational purposes has been neglected by professionals in the field of clinical assessment. Some studies suggest the possibility of a “Native American Pattern” on such tests, indicating a consistent, yet little-understood discrepancy. The present study investigated the impact of cultural identification of Native American college students on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III). The study examined what effect increasing student accountability through a series of pre-set consequences enforced on a "zero tolerance" basis, coupled with increased parent involvement through prompt communication regarding all student absences and tardy arrivals, would have on attendance. The study was held at Middle Township High School in southern New Jersey, a semi-rural school of grades 9-12 with a student population of approximately 1,000, most of whom drive or ride a school bus. This study attempted to explore the relationship that a juvenile delinquent has with three major influences: school, peers, and family. It was hypothesized that juvenile delinquents possess a poor relationship with these influences. Subjects were administered a survey which assesses the relationship with school, peers and family. 19 inmates in a juvenile detention center were administered the survey. There were 15 subjects in the control group who were administered the survey as well. Results from independent t-scores reveal a significant difference in the relationship with school, peers, and family for the two groups. Juvenile delinquents were found to have a …

The purpose of this study was to describe the benefits of peer observation as it affected the teaching staff of Woodbury Junior/Senior High School (New Jersey).

A survey was administered to a group of 13 teachers in the Woodbury Public Schools after they had experienced peer observation. The original sample included 28 teachers who had been selected by the intern in an attempt to guarantee diversity in age, experience, gender, and teaching discipline. State education agencies, school districts, and residential corrective and treatment facilities share common concern for the disproportionate number of youth with disabilities placed in out-of-district settings. Central to this concern is the fact that many juveniles with disabilities in residential facilities may not receive the educational services to which they are entitled. This dissertation assesses the factors that influence the development of juvenile justice policy in France and Germany within the context of systems theory, The project utilizes an open/closed systems framework as a way to conceptualize determinants of juvenile justice policy. France and Germany serve as two single case studies for demonstrating the open and closed dichotomy that characterize system theory with France being characterized as a closed system while Germany is characterized as an open system. This difference is demonstrated through a discussion of historical, cultural, political, social and economic variables, which shape policy development in each of these countries. …
