A Comparison Of Active Learning And Direct Instruction On College Students Enrolled In Two Classes Of Introductory Photography, Deborah A. Hughes-Gallinelli

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to learn about teaching methods and their effects on achievement and skill. The problem was to investigate the effects of both active learning and direct instruction (lecture/demonstration) on students' ability to produce a continuous tone, ten step gray scale, black and white photographic print.

The researcher arranged for a college instructor of photography to teach two intact classes of General Photography using the two instructional methods. The objectives for both classes were the same. Each student in both groups completed eight photographic assignments. After twelve (12) weeks of instruction and studio/lab work, each student …

Toward The Universal, Jennifer Bracy Jan 1997

Toward The Universal, Jennifer Bracy

Theses and Dissertations

This creative project is concerned with archetypal forms expressed in art, design and communication, from Neolithic rock carvings and native American Indian petroglyphs to individual graphic languages that look to the 'primitives' like those of Joan Miro and Neville Brody. It is my belief that through the study of this diverse collection of graphic signs and archetypal forms, one can develop a system of signs that cross barriers of language and culture. A morphology, a collection of possibilities, derived from such archetypal forms, could provide designers with a foundation for the development and use of symbol signs and sign systems.

The Automated Wingman: An Airborne Companion For Users Of Dis Compatible Flight Simulators, Mark M. Edwards Dec 1995

The Automated Wingman: An Airborne Companion For Users Of Dis Compatible Flight Simulators, Mark M. Edwards

Theses and Dissertations

A major problem encountered by users of distributed virtual environments is the lack of simulators available to populate these environments. This problem is usually remedied by using computer generated entities. Unfortunately, these entities often lack adequate human behavior and are readily identified as non-human. This violates the realism premise of distributed virtual reality and is a major problem, especially in training situations. This thesis addresses the problem by presenting a computer generated entity called the Automated Wingman. The Automated Wingman is a semi-automated computer generated aircraft simulator that operates under the control of a designated lead simulator and integrates distributed …

Images Of Native American In Film: The Cases Of Broken Arrow, Dances With Wolves, And Black Robe, Pamela A. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

This study demonstrates how the medium of film continues to depict Native Americans in stereotypical images. A critical analysis of three films: Broken Arrow (1950), Dances wilh-Wolves (1990), and Black Rohe (1992) supports the assumption and argument.

Critical review of these films were made for images of how Native Americans are portrayed. The images include negative portrayals of culture, customs, language, and wardrobe. A compare and contrast tool demonstrates perpetuated stereotypical images of Hollywood negative portrayals of Native Americans. A brief history of motion pictures discusses and presents the development of stereotypical images mvolving Native Americans.

The critical analysis of …

The Motivations For Meaning: A Study Of Persuasive Appeals In Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Lawrence Arthur Lannoo May 1993

The Motivations For Meaning: A Study Of Persuasive Appeals In Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Lawrence Arthur Lannoo

Theses and Dissertations

In 1976, one of the most violent and controversial films of that decade was released in American movie theaters. The film, Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, was heralded by some film scholars as a masterpiece.

However, others criticized the film for its graphic presentation of urban violence. This criticism intensified when John Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981, apparently motivated by his love for a character in the film, played by Jodie Foster.

The director of Taxi Driver, Martin Scorsese, responded to the criticisms of the violence in his film. He suggested that he was not trying …

Data was collected using a camcorder and two segmentation schemes: manual segmentation and motion-based, automatic segmentation. Data consisted of over 2000. 32x32 pixel, 8 bit gray scale images of 52 subjects; each subject had two to ten days worth of images collected. Several training and test sets …

Function Of Song In Chipping Sparrows (Spizella Passerina), Daniel J. Albrecht May 1991

Function Of Song In Chipping Sparrows (Spizella Passerina), Daniel J. Albrecht

Theses and Dissertations

The functions most commonly ascribed to bird song are mate attraction and territory defense. These are combined into the "dual function" hypothesis. I tested this hypothesis to determine if these are the functions of song in chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina).

I performed a series of neighbor/stranger song playbacks to test the territory defense portion of the "dual function" hypothesis. If song has a territorial function, songs of different individuals might be recognized by territory owners and might elicit different levels of response. However, territorial male chipping sparrows did not respond differently to neighbor and stranger song playbacks either early in …

The Communicational Function Of Wearing Apparel For Lady Missionaries Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Alice W. Buehner Jan 1982

The Communicational Function Of Wearing Apparel For Lady Missionaries Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Alice W. Buehner

Theses and Dissertations

Because the need exists for a professional image among lady missionaries, this thesis will define what knowledge concerning communication of clothing is necessary in order to create a desirable image of professionalism. The term "professional" is derived from available research describing the most appropriate attire for women business executives. In lieu of an experimental study by this author, the interpretation of the professional look is supported by Molloy's extensive research on women's wearing apparel. His research shows that beyond a doubt, the skirted suit and blouse give women "a look of authority and a sense of presence in business." In …

Themes, Intentions, And Fog: An Artist's Statement, Robert M. Jankel May 1975

Themes, Intentions, And Fog: An Artist's Statement, Robert M. Jankel

Theses and Dissertations

My statement *as an artist expresses itself in chronological order: how I as an artist, over an approximate period of a year and a half, sought to bring meaning into my visual expressions even though I worked in a subjective and abstract manner. First, my paper discusses the importance of being aware of basic themes and intentions, and how ones thoughts and emotions affect the whole visual process. Also, I have asserted that an artist can make general statements which visually communicate on more than one level of consciousness.

Painting As A Public Art, Wayne R. Juhala Aug 1967

Painting As A Public Art, Wayne R. Juhala

Theses and Dissertations

The artist throughout history has had difficulty in communicating to the mass of people. Most art has been made for special classes of people who represent authority. There has always been a need for a meaningful visual communication with a"VI the people because there is a need for a fine art which can fill the gap left by the passing of folk art. Painting is the easiest of the art forms for the public to understand and grasp because it has the greatest storytelling possibilities. There is a real need for artists to try and communicate with the broad mass …

An Analysis And Description Of Advertising Agencies In North Dakota, John N. Hein

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes and analyzes the advertising practices of selected North Dakota advertising agencies. Much of the data was obtained from personal interviews with executives of five North Dakota advertising agencies. Such agency topics as clients, services, media used, billings, and false and misleading advertising laws adhered to by North Dakota agencies were described.

A total of 65 advertisers were represented by North Dakota advertising agencies in 1966. The large national and regional advertisers were most profitable in terms of billings to agencies. Knowledge and familiarity of markets and media of North Dakota and the surrounding area were probably the …
