Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Retardation Regarding Inclusion In Death And Dying Rituals, Paulette Marie Wagner
Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Retardation Regarding Inclusion In Death And Dying Rituals, Paulette Marie Wagner
Theses and Dissertations
The principle of normalization requires that persons with mental retardation (MR) be encouraged to participate in the death and dying rituals which help people process the death of a loved one. It is widely argued that persons with MR would benefit from such inclusion, but little research exists to confirm this, or even to determine the degree to which persons with MR are encouraged to or discouraged from participating in death and dying rituals.
The purpose of this study was to identify how adults with MR are being included in death and dying events and rituals. It also adds to …

Development Of A Method For Assessing The Organizational, Cultural, And Political Considerations Affecting The Insertion Of Siloms Into The Mod, Samir Mustafa
Theses and Dissertations
United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) has a minimal number of aircraft at its disposal. As a result, the aircraft are considered high demand, low-density (small number in Air Force inventory) weapon systems. Any chance to increase aircraft availability would greatly enhance the capability of AFSOC. Isochronal maintenance (ISO) conducted once every 365 days (per AFI for C-130 aircraft) provides the best opportunity to increase aircraft availability by improving the scheduling of tasks and accurately estimating the inspection duration. Scheduled maintenance portrays the characteristics of projects, therefore, this theses proposed that Critical Chain (CC) scheduling, a project management …

In 1872, Mormon plural wife, educator, and suffragist Lucinda Lee Dalton began writing fiery political essays and insightful poetry for the Woman's Exponent from her small community in southern Utah. Through her writings Dalton endeavors to shape the opinions of Exponent readers by working within public discourse toward the goal of equality for women. At times both optimistic and troubled, she uses the rhetorical strategies of humor, irony, reason, identification, and persuasion to educate men and women on disparities and to encourage women to participate actively in their own emancipation. She often engages in a dialogical process with other writers …

Persons who are in recovery from addiction to alcohol or other drugs are expected to give up what is often their main coping resource: the maladaptive use of an addictive substance. Yet, typically, recovery programs do not contain a formalized stress-management component. This study examines recovering addicts' spontaneous use of adaptive coping resources, as well as exploring the connection between personality and preferred resources. Personality was assessed using the Revised NEO-Personality Inventory. The use of coping resources was assessed using the Coping Resource Inventory. In addition, participants also completed a short demographic questionnaire for exploratory analysis of possible links between …

Interdisciplinary Education At Academic Health Centers: Attitudes And Barriers Affecting Its Delivery, Stephanie F. Gardner
Interdisciplinary Education At Academic Health Centers: Attitudes And Barriers Affecting Its Delivery, Stephanie F. Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Interdisciplinary care is a method of providing patient care that incorporates the efforts of various health care providers. Studies show this approach can improve patient care and decrease overall costs to the healthcare system. Despite the evidence for the benefits of interdisciplinary care, there are no well-defined models for training students during their didactic years to become members of an interdisciplinary team. This study determines the attitudes of administrators of professional schools toward interdisciplinary education, identifies perceived barriers to interdisciplinary education, examines the extent to which interdisciplinary education is occurring at academic health center campuses, and identifies the courses that …
Addressing Mormon Female Communities: Working Towards A Woman's Capacity, Alyssa Snow Larson
Addressing Mormon Female Communities: Working Towards A Woman's Capacity, Alyssa Snow Larson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis project explores the discourse in Mormon culture addressing Mormon female communities. The discussion is sociological rather than theological and examines the functional characteristics of discourse found in the tradition regarding women. It sets out to review a paradox in the discourse addressing Mormon women that has been documented over time. I examine how this paradox in Mormon discourse establishes and limits women's roles; to do so, I use personal examples and the experience provided by thirteen women whom I interviewed.
The thesis is divided into three main discussions: Community, Discursive Action and Cooperation. My methodology involves a theoretical …

The Effects Of Eldercare Responsibilities On Employed Caregivers, Nancy Jean Mcenroe
Theses and Dissertations
The number of people in the older population will continue to grow as the decades progress. The most rapid increase expected would be between the years 2010 and 2030 when the “baby boom” generation reaches 65 years or older. By the year 2030, there will be about 70 million older persons, more than twice the number than for the year 1998.
More and more people will live long enough to experience multiple chronic illnesses, disability, and dependency; in addition there will be more relatives in their fifties and sixties who will be facing the concern and expense of caring for …

Cleaning Up The Junkyard: An Exploration In Developing An Online Course, Wendi Milam
Theses and Dissertations
As America enters the 21st century, our systems of education must adapt to the changes in culture and technology. Our visions of the modern classroom are no longer limited to a room on a campus with a professor and a blackboard Many classes are going fully online, some are meeting only once a semester if at all. This type of learning and teaching opens the door for many complex questions: What is the most effective style of web site to use? How should the instructor form the requirements of the class? What should the instructor use for academic evaluation …
Writing In A Psychology Classroom: Learning And Adopting The Apa Epistemology., Suellen Shaw
Writing In A Psychology Classroom: Learning And Adopting The Apa Epistemology., Suellen Shaw
Theses and Dissertations
Each discipline has unique conventions and discourse, which new writers in that area must learn to gain entry and credibility in that discipline. Learning of a new discourse is not automatic. This dissertation explores how undergraduate students in two psychology classes have achieved that learning. In doing so it considers the following questions: “What strategies do students use to learn to write in psychology?” “How do students discern what an instructor's definitions of good writing are?” “How does that instructor convey the discourse and expectations to the students?” “What skills and knowledge are transferable from previous classes?” “What from previous …
