A Study Of Reaction Parameters In The Hydrogenation Of Acetic Acid By Rhenium Heptoxide Catalyst, Victor L. Mylroie Aug 1968

A Study Of Reaction Parameters In The Hydrogenation Of Acetic Acid By Rhenium Heptoxide Catalyst, Victor L. Mylroie

Theses and Dissertations

Rhenium oxides as well as other rhenium compounds are known to display a broad spectrum of catalytic activity,^25 being resistant to attack by acids under nonoxidizing conditions, and showing a remarkable ability to resist poisoning which is a serious limiting factor in many commonly used catalysts. Rhenium catalysts are cheaper than the platinum metals with the exception of palladium. One of the most remarkable properties of the rhenium catalyst is the ability to catalyze the hydrogenation of carboxylic acids and amides to the corresponding alcohols and amines respectively. The carboxyl group (-COOH) is notoriously difficult to reduce catalytically and most …

A Study Of Multiple Embryo Development In The Netleaf Hackberry (Celtis Reticulata), Gary Porter Lawrence Aug 1968

A Study Of Multiple Embryo Development In The Netleaf Hackberry (Celtis Reticulata), Gary Porter Lawrence

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has shown that polyembryony occurs in many species of the Ulmaceae. The purpose of this study was to determine the method of multiple embryo formation in netleaf hackberry, Celtis reticulata Torr. Collections of specimens were made throughout a two-year period. Collections were begun in early spring while the trees were still in the bud state. Collections were continued regularly throughout the growing season. The collections were preserved in FAA solution and were prepared for microscopic examination as follows: (1) The tertiary butyl paraffin method was used for dehydrating and embedding. (2) Sectioning was done on a rotary microtome …

Theses and Dissertations

A new isothermal titration calorimeter has been designed to facilitate the study of heats of reaction and heats of solution at constant temperature. With this calorimeter, endothermic or exothermic processes can be studied at temperatures constant to ±0.0002°C. Heat effects are compensated by balancing the heat effect of the process taking place in the calorimeter against a variable heat and a constant cooling Peltier device. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and the heat of dilution of aqueous HClO_4 solutions. For these systems heats were measured to an accuracy of ±0.02 calorie. The Cat Flea, Ctenocephalides Felis, As A Potential Vector Of Trypanosoma Lewisi, Robert Patrick Belihar

Theses and Dissertations

The first hemoflagellate was discovered by Valentine in 1841; two years later Gruby established the genus Trypanosoma for a flagel-late in the blood of frogs, and in 1879 Lewis in India described Try-panosoma lewisi Kent of the rat (Belding, 1965:141).

Fall And Winter Population Study Of The Macro-Invertebrate Fauna Of Lincoln Beach, Utah Lake, With Notes On Invertebrates In Fish Stomachs., Ralph Buckly Brown Aug 1968

Fall And Winter Population Study Of The Macro-Invertebrate Fauna Of Lincoln Beach, Utah Lake, With Notes On Invertebrates In Fish Stomachs., Ralph Buckly Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the inconveniences associated with under ice population studies, most aquatic population studies are made during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Like most lakes little is known about the fall and winter popu-lations of the Utah Lake invertebrates. The purpose of this study is to classify, determine quantitative fall and winter population fluctuations, and obtain life history and ecological information of the macro-invertebrates at . Lincoln Beach, Utah Lake. This lake is the largest, natural occurring body of fresh water in the state and has a high potential for the production of gamefish and water-fowl. As Smart (1960) …

History Of Fort Pembina 1870-1895, William D. Thomson Aug 1968

History Of Fort Pembina 1870-1895, William D. Thomson

Theses and Dissertations

The unsettled status of the Red River Valley during the 1860's made inevitable the establishment of a military post near the 49th Parallel. The Minnesota Uprising in 1862 caused a band of Sioux Indians, responsible for the massacre, to flee to Canada to escape punishment by the military. In 1863, a hastily organized battalion established a temporary fort at Pembina to capture the renegades. After accomplishing its mission, the battalion abandoned the post in 1864.

With the end of the Civil War, people looked to the frontier for fertile lands to settle; but the Indian threat kept them out …

A Study Of Zone Offensive Techniques Used By Class "A" High School Basketball Coaches In North Dakota, Denis J. Limke Aug 1968

A Study Of Zone Offensive Techniques Used By Class "A" High School Basketball Coaches In North Dakota, Denis J. Limke

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine what types of zone offense are used by Class "A" High School Basketball Coaches in North Dakota.

Thirty-seven questionnaires along with basketball court diagrams with four different zone defenses already drawn on them were sent to all Class "A" basketball coaches. Thirty-one questionnaires were received and an analysis made. Each type of offense was then drawn and explained on a court diagram.

The most common defense encountered within the last five years was the "2-1-2" zone defense.

All coaches used screens to prevent normal defensive movement and believed in movement of offensive …

The Affect Of An Individual's Membership Segment On Attitude Orientation, Values, And Political Participation, James H. Larson Aug 1968

The Affect Of An Individual's Membership Segment On Attitude Orientation, Values, And Political Participation, James H. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to discover the effect of a voluntary association on the individual's political behavior, attitudes, and values. If the process of internalizing norms, attitudes and values of the association does occur, it should occur in relation to the various types of psychological membership segments of the relationship-space model. In addition, the purpose of the study is to relate the membership segments of the r-space model to reference group theory.

The voluntary associations of Grand Forks, listed with the Chamber of Commerce, were grouped according to the classification scheme of Gordon and Babchuk: degree of accessibility; …
