An Investigation Of A Mycorrhizal Association On Opuntia Polyacantha, R. Craig Stutz Aug 1969

An Investigation Of A Mycorrhizal Association On Opuntia Polyacantha, R. Craig Stutz

Theses and Dissertations

Roots of Opuntia, polyacantha Haw. from Juab County, Utah were found to be nodulated. An anatomical study of the nodulated roots showed them to be ectotrophic mycorrhizae. Fusarium poae (Peck) Wollenweaver was found associated with the nodules both as an epiphyte and an endophyte. However, reinfection with this organism failed to induce subsequent nodulation. Under certain conditions the roots of o. polyacantha are able to overcome the mycorrhizal infection and elongate. It is not uncommon for several branch roots to originate from a single nodule. It is suggested that the fungus-root association found in o. polyacantha represents an early stage …

A Physical Fitness Comparison Between Rural And Urban Children And Canadian Fitness Standards, Daniel E. Rosin Aug 1969

A Physical Fitness Comparison Between Rural And Urban Children And Canadian Fitness Standards, Daniel E. Rosin

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not Manitoba school students of rural areas were better physically fit than students of urban areas. The investigator was also interested in finding out how these two areas (urban and rural) compared to the National Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (CAHPER) standards. The comparisons were made by (1) comparing the mean of the rural and urban test results based on the findings of the Centennial Athletic Awards Programme: (2) by compar- ing the mean of rural and urban areas with the CAHPER mean.

The null hypothesis was …

An Investigation Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Grand Forks Fitness Test As Administered To Forty-Two Central High School Boys, Julian M. Gulsvig

Theses and Dissertations

The lack of fitness exhibited by American men tested for induction into the military service prompted the development of fitness tests to assay the physical fitness of our nation's youth. The Grand Forks Test was designed to determine the level of fitness of the youth in the Grand Forks Public Schools. This study was formulated to determine the reliability and validity of the Grand Forks Fitness Test.

A stratified random sample of forty-two boys from Central High School completed the testing phase of this study. Each subject was tested on three consecutive mornings. The Grand Forks Test was administered the …

Thermal Conductivity And Thermal Diffusivity Of North Dakota And Montana Lignite, Julio F. Duarte Aug 1969

Thermal Conductivity And Thermal Diffusivity Of North Dakota And Montana Lignite, Julio F. Duarte

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this experiment was to determine the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of lignite from five mines in North Dakota and Montana with full bed moisture.

The values of the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity found in the present work do not show a significant difference between samples. The thermal conductivity ranges from 0.152 to 0.170 Btu hr-1 ft-1 deg F-1. The thermal diffusivity was from 0.0051 to 0.0058 sq ft hr-1. No significant difference was found due to the cut of the samples with the long axis parallel or perpendicular to …

A Survey Of High School Wrestling Weight Control Programs Used Throughout The United States During The 1968-69 Wrestling Season, Dennis J. Friestad Aug 1969

A Survey Of High School Wrestling Weight Control Programs Used Throughout The United States During The 1968-69 Wrestling Season, Dennis J. Friestad

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to determine the high school wrestling weight control programs used throughout the United States. It was felt that this information would be useful for coaches or for high school activities associations that are responsible for determining a state’s weight control program.

The questionnaire technique was used to gather the data. Each of the fifty state high school activities associations was contacted and forty-five of them responded to the questionnaire. Forty of these state associations supported or controlled wrestling and gave information about their wrestling programs.

Results showed that thirty-five of the forty states had some type …

A Comparison Of Heart Rate Between Two Methods Of Survival, Lyall Glen Bennett

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in mean heart rate, if any between drown-proofing and supine floating.

Heart rate was recorded by the researcher by palpating the radial artery for one-half minute.

One group of ten subjects was used in this study. This group was tested in the spring of 1969. The subjects were tested twice with each session lasting one hour. During each session drownproofing and supine floating were each administered for one-half hour. The subjects were tested six times during each half hour session.

Comparisons were made between the mean differences for each method …

A Tone Signature Analysis Of Multispectral Photography, Michael V. Miller Aug 1969

A Tone Signature Analysis Of Multispectral Photography, Michael V. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Densitometrie analysis of separation negatives, Ektachrome and Infrared Ektachrorae film was performed to determine the tone signature from the films and to compare the respective tone signatures for reliability and use.

Three types of vegetation, coniferous and deciduous trees and grass, were used as targets for all the photography in this study.

The analysis and comparison of data used in this investigation revealed that density fluctuations within a specific spectrum band of a particular target were too great to yield a reliable and identifiable tone signature.

Analysis of the data revealed that the density differences between adjacent spectral bands remain …

Reproductive Ecology Of Female Sharp-Tailed Grouse (Pedioecetes Phasianellus Jamesi Lincoln) And Food Habits Of Broods In Southwestern North Dakota, Lawrence Stanley Bernhoft

Theses and Dissertations

A study of the reproductive ecology and brood food habits of sharp-tail grouse (Pedioecates phaslanel.lus jamesi Lincoln) was conducted in southwestern North Dakota during 1967 and 1968. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the nest and brooding cover selected by the female was made to determine the effect of intensive grazing. Radio telemetry was utilized to monitor dispersals of 13 females from three dancing grounds; eight nests were located. Nest sites were selected in areas of moderate grazing with residual vegetation, or in non-use areas associated with intensive grazing' and land-use. Deferred grazing on native range was important in providing …

Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen Aug 1969

Ultrastructural Investigations Of Tilletia Caries Teliospores, James Vincent Allen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ultrastructure of Tilletia caries teliospores. Specimens were prepared for viewing in the electron microscope by freeze-etching and thin-sectioning techniques. Thin-sectioning techniques gave excellent results with the teliospore walls and the lipid bodies within the teliospore but failed to adequately fix the membranes and internal organelle systems. Micrographs of Tilletia caries teliospores prepared using thin-sectioning show three major wall layers and two partition wall layers and abundant lipid bodies. The freeze-etch method of spore preparation proved superior to the thin-sectioning used in this study to reveal the internal organelle systems of the …
