Verbal Discrimination Learning As A Function Of Manipulated Frequency And Length Of Study Interval, David R. Skeen Aug 1968

Verbal Discrimination Learning As A Function Of Manipulated Frequency And Length Of Study Interval, David R. Skeen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this pair of studies was to investigate three hypotheses generated by the frequency theory of verbal discrimination learning. The frequency principle suggests that a number of sequential events occur in verbal discrimination learning and that each event in the sequence leads eventually to a greater number of frequency units being associated with the correct alternative in each verbal discrimination unit.

It was hypothesized that an increase in study time would be positively related to acquisition of a verbal discrimination list. Second, it was predicted that discrimination pairs constructed of high frequency stimuli would be more difficult to …

A Comparison Of Multiple Unit Activity During Classical, Instrumental, And Discrimination Learning Using A Noxious Unconditioned Stimulus, James V. Beardsley Jun 1968

A Comparison Of Multiple Unit Activity During Classical, Instrumental, And Discrimination Learning Using A Noxious Unconditioned Stimulus, James V. Beardsley

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple unit recording is a relatively new electrophysiological recording technique which records spike potentials from many neurons. In the Halas laboratory and others, systematic changes have been observed during classical conditioning but none under other conditioning procedures . Recently, some have interpreted changes in evoked potentials and multiple unit potentials as due to emotional arousal (fear) and thus related more to a conditioned emotional response (CER) than to conditioning per se. If a CER occurs, and not a learning modification, then during classical aversive conditioning a high sustained neuronal response ought to occur. This would reflect the high degree of …

The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The approach of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 posed several real and imagined threats to the Mormon Kingdom in the Great Basin. The railroad also made it possible for miners to get to the gold fields faster and with the heave equipment necessary to make Utah mining profitable. Sensing the political problems and the social and moral evils that would accompany the railroad, the Mormon leaders, in hopes of meeting these problems, counseled to extend their economic goal of self-sufficiency. Through stepped-up cooperation and unity they …
