A Study Of The Ontology Of Evil In The Educational Philosophy Of Martin Buber, Laud Oswald Vaught
A Study Of The Ontology Of Evil In The Educational Philosophy Of Martin Buber, Laud Oswald Vaught
Theses and Dissertations
Martin Buber preferred to be known as a philosophical anthropologist rather than a philosopher, theologian, or teacher. Any of these titles are properly used since the scope of his writings contribute significantly to each of these fields.
It is the purpose of this paper to show that what he had to say concerning the Ontology of Evil is significant in the study of educational theory and that his own educational philosophy was influenced by his presuppositions concerning the nature of evil.
Chapter II is devoted to the literature relating to the basic elements of this study: the problem of evil, …
Attraction Of A Senior Citizen To A Hypothetical Stranger As A Function Of The Stranger's Age, Sex, And Attitude Similarity, Carl R. Westphal
Attraction Of A Senior Citizen To A Hypothetical Stranger As A Function Of The Stranger's Age, Sex, And Attitude Similarity, Carl R. Westphal
Theses and Dissertations
The present study was designed to examine the variables which affect attraction in a senior citizen population. In particular, variables which have been shown to affect attraction in younger persons were examined as to their relevancy to older subjects. It was predicted that a stranger’s age, sex, and proportion of similar attitudes would have a significant effect on a senior citizen's attraction rating of the stranger.
A stranger’s age, sex, and proportion of similar attitudes were varied according to a 3 (proportion of similar attitudes) X 3 (age of stranger) X 2 (sex of stranger) factorial design. Male and female …
The Effect Of Success And Failure Experiences On Self Concept In Retarded Children, Candace Joan Varvil
The Effect Of Success And Failure Experiences On Self Concept In Retarded Children, Candace Joan Varvil
Theses and Dissertations
The object of this study was to examine the relationship, if any, between success and failure experiences and self-concept in retarded children. The Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale was administered to 30 institutionalized mentally retarded children at the Grafton State School. Following the administration of the pretest, the subjects were divided into three groups, two experimental and one control. Each group was further subdivided into a high and a low self-concept group on the basis of pretest performance. The groups were generally comparable with respect to chronological age and sex. Experimental group A was exposed to a success experience, experimental group …
The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Field Dependence-Independence In College Students, Patricia A. Torness
The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Field Dependence-Independence In College Students, Patricia A. Torness
Theses and Dissertations
One rather consistent finding from studies involving field dependence-independence is that males are more field independent, more articulated in their approach to certain perceptual tasks, than females. It appears that socialization factors and sex-role identification relate to the development of field dependence or field independence. If society plays a part in the development of individual differences in field dependency, a change in society such as the present movement toward greater equality in sex roles could possibly influence sex differences in field dependency. The present study attempts to assess the effect of attitudes favoring traditional roles for women vs. more liberal …
Kenneth Patchen Picture-Poems, Laurel J. Reuter
Kenneth Patchen Picture-Poems, Laurel J. Reuter
Theses and Dissertations
The problem was to present an exhibition of the works of Kenneth Patchen to the University of North Dakota community; to augment the exhibition with a published catalog which would give the uninitiated viewer a sense of Patchen's place in both literature and the visual arts; to accompany the catalog, in thesis form, with a critical article about Patchen’s work.
The procedure involved the following steps: (1) A compilation of a Patchen bibliography. (2) A week in California with Mrs. Patchen during which time I surveyed the artist's entire output of picture-poems and, based upon my critical judgment of the …
Behavioral Effects Of Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Kryptopyrrole In The Rat, Peter C. Peterson
Behavioral Effects Of Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Kryptopyrrole In The Rat, Peter C. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Zinc deficiency has been shown to have a wide range of behavioral effects in the rat. The experiments presented below were conducted to determine the effects of postnatal zinc deficiency (birth-21 days) on avoidance learning and on measures of emotionality. Kryptopyrrole, a substance which has been shown to produce "catatonic" freezing behavior and atypical electrical activity in rat brains, was administered to half of the Ss to study possible zinc deficiency-kryptopyrrole interactions.
Dams were made zinc deficient from the day of delivery until day 21 on a diet contaning less than 1 ppm zinc. Two dietary control groups were used: …
Personality Dimensions Of Drinking Patterns In Hospitalized Male Alcoholics, Donald J. Mccullagh
Personality Dimensions Of Drinking Patterns In Hospitalized Male Alcoholics, Donald J. Mccullagh
Theses and Dissertations
Research concerning alcoholism and personality has often been based upon the single syndrome concept of alcoholism. At the theoretical level it has been recognized that different personality patterns exist among alcoholics. However, few researchers have addressed themselves to this area. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relationship existed between alcoholic drinking patterns and alcoholism severity based on the responses to the Alcohol Use Questionnaire and personality traits as measured by Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire.
The sample consisted of 101 white males admitted to a midwestern alcoholism treatment center during a three month period in 1974. …
Early Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Aggression In The Rat, Mark J. Hanlon
Early Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Aggression In The Rat, Mark J. Hanlon
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of a transitory zinc deficiency on subsequent aggression were assessed. Eleven Sprague Dawley dams were assigned to three dietary conditions.on days 1—21 postpartum. They were fed either a low zinc diet (less than 1 ppm) or an equal amount of the same diet but with zinc supplementation via their water supply, or unrestricted amounts of the zinc supplemented regimen. Within the first two days postpartum, litter sizes were equalized. All dams were returned to zinc adequate diets on day 22, and the pups were weaned on day 24. Food intake data for pups and dams were recorded as …

A Comparison Of Resistance Training Techniques And Their Effect On The Running Speed Of College Football Players, Josiah H. Bartlett
Theses and Dissertations
This study was undertaken to determine which of the three most popular methods of resistance training, when used as a supplement to football practice, would have the greatest effect on increasing the running speed of the college football player.
Forty-two freshman and sophomore football players at the Univ- \ ersity of Minnesota Technical College - Crookston served as subjects. The subjects were divided into three experimental groups. Experimental Group I participated in football practice and isotonic resistance training, Experimental Group II participated in football practice and isometric resistance training, and Experimental Group III participated in football practice and resistance running …
An Experimental Examination Of Cautela's Covert Sensitization As A Smoking Reduction Technique, Jerome Irwin Weiss
An Experimental Examination Of Cautela's Covert Sensitization As A Smoking Reduction Technique, Jerome Irwin Weiss
Theses and Dissertations
Experimental studies investigating the aversive imagery technique of Covert Sensitization as a cigarette smoking deterrent have not clearly testified to its effectiveness. They have either deviated from Cautela’s technique and/or confounded their results by adding other components to it.
The present study tested the hypothesis that the successful results of Covert Sensitization requires both therapist-administered treatment and instructions that Subjects (Ss) also self-administer treatment. The self-administered treatment (homework) consisted of Ss imagining Covert Sensitization scenes twice a day between meetings with the Experimenter (E).
Thirty-six habitual smokers were randomly assigned to one of three training groups; one group of twelve …

Relationships Among Personality, Empathic Ability And Counselor Effectiveness, Brian R. Brewer
Theses and Dissertations
Problem
The purpose of this study was to measure personality characteristics and empathic ability of masters level counseling students and then to determine the relationship of these dimensions to independent ratings of their counseling effectiveness. Relationships between personality characteristics and empathic ability were also examined as were differences in personality and empathy between more effective and less effective counselor groups.
Method
The subjects were 34 masters level counseling students enrolled in their first counseling practicum. They completed Form A and Form B of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF), the measure of personality, and the Affective Sensitivity Scale, the measure …
