The Adjustment Process Associated With The Parenting Of A Severely Handicapped Child., Martee Boyce Robinson Bushfield

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose. This study was designed as an investigation of the adjustment processes that parents go through when a child with a handicapping condition is born into a family. Specifically, there was interest in looking at possible parallels in the adjustment pattern of these parents and that of grieving individuals. Fifteen families (23 parents) were interviewed on tape during two separate sessions in an effort to observe the adjustment process. Information from the tapes was transcribed and charted on a two cycle chart to indicate the frequency of various responses (i.e. the responses of guilt, anger, bartering, denial and acceptance). Questionnaires …

Moral Judgment And Life Experiences, Edward P. Kehrwald Dec 1979

Moral Judgment And Life Experiences, Edward P. Kehrwald

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research in the cognitive developmental approach to moral judgment has been to delineate changes occurring with age in the person's understanding and interpretation of moral rules. Recently, the Defining Issues Test of moral judgment has been used as an objective, standardized measure due to its quantitative description of the developmental process. A systematic exploration of the importance of previous life experiences and their impacts upon the individual's moral judgment has not been reported in the literature.

The current study investigated the association between subjects' use of principled moral judgment with their previous life experiences, and with the perceived impact …

The Relationship Between Transitional Object Attachments In Early Childhood And Psychological Functioning In Later Life, Keith Cohen Dec 1979

The Relationship Between Transitional Object Attachments In Early Childhood And Psychological Functioning In Later Life, Keith Cohen

Theses and Dissertations

This study focused upon assessing various relationships between the presence or absence of a transitional object in early childhood and aspects of psychological functioning in later life. The nature of the inanimate object attachments were determined by stringent criteria involving both self- and parental-reports. Personality differences were found between those subjects demonstrating strong singular attachments that persisted for a considerable period of time and those having no such significant attachments. The nature of what might be considered optimal object attachments was discussed in light of the findings.

The Learning Package As An Instructional Tool For Non-Certified Pre-Kindergarten Teaching Personnel, Daniel James Gartrell Dec 1979

The Learning Package As An Instructional Tool For Non-Certified Pre-Kindergarten Teaching Personnel, Daniel James Gartrell

Theses and Dissertations

The population of non-certified pre-kindergarten teachers in northern Minnesota have encountered problems in obtaining formal, on- campus teaching instruction. "Self Concept Development and the Teacher- Child Relationship" was one of many learning packages developed at Bemidji State University to assist the population. The dissertation was a response to two topics of inquiry about the population and the learning package: (A) What are typical pre-package responses by the population toward young children in respect to self concept development? (B) How effective is the learning package as an instructional tool intended to facilitate the internalization of principles relating to self concept development? …

Internal And External Context Effects Upon The Types Of Information Encoded From Pictures, James G. Penland Dec 1979

Internal And External Context Effects Upon The Types Of Information Encoded From Pictures, James G. Penland

Theses and Dissertations

Several investigators (e.g., Biederman, et al. 1974; Loftus & Bell 1975) have proposed that one's perception and subsequent recogni tion of pictured scenes results from the acquisition of two types of information. One is specific in nature and results from the direct inspection of object detail. The second type is more general in char acter and is thought to result from the processing of contextual in formation. Friedman (in press) has pointed out that context must be considered to encompass both internal (memorial) and external (physical) constraints, and as such to have a dual informational base. The present study was …

A Study Of Natural Language Phonetic Symbolism, David B. Tarr Dec 1979

A Study Of Natural Language Phonetic Symbolism, David B. Tarr

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation concerns itself with the phenomenon of natural language phonetic symbolism. Proponents of phonetic symbolism, or the hypothesis of phonetic universals, as it is sometimes called, claim that human speech sounds have inherent meaning apart from their learned association with referents in the world. Since phonetic symbolism had been used to explain both success in guessing the meanings of foreign words and also a consistent tendency to attribute particular meanings to selected nonlinguistic verbalizations, it was hypothesized that phonetic symbols were part of an underlying stratum of semantic invariance. Further, it was assumed that such phonetic/semantic symbols should …

Self-Esteem Effects In The Measurement Of Sex-Role Orientation, Steven H. Weaver Aug 1979

Self-Esteem Effects In The Measurement Of Sex-Role Orientation, Steven H. Weaver

Theses and Dissertations

In a replication of a study which demonstrated a relationship between Masculinity and Independence, the nature of the relationship between Self-esteem and orthogonal Masculinity and Femininity di mensions was examined. Regression analyses for 212 female and 165 male undergraduates indicated that for both sexes, Masculinity was moderately correlated to Self-esteem, but that Femininity did not add to this prediction significantly. Scores for Independence were obtained from a subset of 24 females and 29 males by placing them in a conformity paradigm situation. The major hypothesis was that Masculinity would not contribute uniquely to the prediction of Inde pendence made on …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The Teacher Education Alternatives Model At St. Cloud State University, Judith E. Minier

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: This study was undertaken for the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of an alternative teacher education program at St. Cloud State University. The Teacher Education Alternatives Model (TEAM) Project provided an optional means of training for undergraduate elementary education students. The traditional program and the TEAM Project coexisted as the two avenues to teacher licensure over a span of three years.

The evaluation of TEAM's efforts and outcomes was needed to aid program decisions in the college of education at St. Cloud State Univer sity. The study would also generally contribute to research about teacher education.

Procedure: The evaluation …

The Effects Of Imaginal Strategies, Trait Anxiety And Sex Differences On Skin Temperature And Attentional Bias, Ryan D. Jagim Aug 1979

The Effects Of Imaginal Strategies, Trait Anxiety And Sex Differences On Skin Temperature And Attentional Bias, Ryan D. Jagim

Theses and Dissertations

Past research has suggested the potency of imagery in mediating peripheral skin temperature changes (Maslach, Marshall & Zimbardo, 1972). Imagery has also been found to be a relevant variable in the research area of brain lateralization (Morgan, McDonald & McDonald, 1971). The present study drew these rather divergent lines of research together by utilizing imagery as the common factor. This study investigated the relationship between hemispheric laterality and autonomic laterality by concomitantly monitoring bilateral skin temperature and lateral hemispheric activation as measured by attentional bias (Kinsbourne, 1970). In addition, the present study provided a test of the potency of imaginal …

A Study Of Friedrich Durrenmatt's Hero In Romulus Der Grosse, Der Besuch Der Alten Dame, And Die Physiker, Helen Weber Hausler Aug 1979

A Study Of Friedrich Durrenmatt's Hero In Romulus Der Grosse, Der Besuch Der Alten Dame, And Die Physiker, Helen Weber Hausler

Theses and Dissertations

The fact that Durrenmatt is a writer of Komodien is well-known. He maintains that in depicting the present, comic elements must be used in order to create distance between the action on the stage and the audience. This does not mean that the tragic is entirely impossible, but rather that a portrayal of the tragic can only be attained through the comedy. And indeed the outcome of a Durrenmatt Komodie better resembles that of the tragedy than that of the comedy. Keeping in mind that there is then a mixture of the comic and the tragic, it is the purpose …

Cognitive Changes During The Grief Process, Barbara J. Benner Aug 1979

Cognitive Changes During The Grief Process, Barbara J. Benner

Theses and Dissertations

Although many authors have used the term "grief work" since Lindemann (1944) first coined it, there has been no systematic investigation of the nature of this phenomenon. This study sought to delineate the cognitive and interpersonal events that occur during grief events and grief resolution. It was hypothesized that grief work involves the creation of a new relationship with the deceased, and that this would be manifested in a variety of styles of grief.

Men and women who had been widowed within the previous two years were identified through newspaper obituaries and recruited as subjects. Sixty subjects completed two process …

Learned Helplessness: Affect In Relation To Facilitation And Interference Effects, Thomas R. Foster Aug 1979

Learned Helplessness: Affect In Relation To Facilitation And Interference Effects, Thomas R. Foster

Theses and Dissertations

Learned helplessness is an experimental analogue of depression. In ess;ence learned helplessness theory states that exposure to noncontingent feedback leads to changes in self esteem, performance and affect. Brief exposure to noncontingent feedback is thought to cause increases in anxiety and/or hostility and these motivational changes are thought to facilitate subsequent performance. Extended exposure to noncontingent feedback is thought to cause decreases in self esteem and increases in depression and these motivational changes are thought to be associated with subsequent impaired performance.

One hundred and twelve undergraduate students participated in a six group experiment with groups receiving either contingent or …

Willingness To Self-Disclose And Attraction For The Therapist As Functions Of Subject-Therapist Matching On Conceptual System And Attitude Direction, Robin Foster Aug 1979

Willingness To Self-Disclose And Attraction For The Therapist As Functions Of Subject-Therapist Matching On Conceptual System And Attitude Direction, Robin Foster

Theses and Dissertations

The main purpose of the investigation was to study willingness to -self-disclose and attraction for the therapist as functions of matching subjects and construed therapists for similarity/dissimilarity of attitude direction and concreteness/abstractness of conceptual system. A secondary purpose was to investigate willingness to selfd^ sclose and interpersonal attraction as functions of the conceptual system of the subject and the professional status of construed therapists.

A pool of undergraduates was given the "This I Believe Test" (Harvey, Hunt, and Schroder 1961) which were independently scored by two judges and used to select 16 male and 16 female subjects clearly representative of …

Examination Of The Therapeutic Process In A Juvenile Probation Setting And Further Validation Of The Group Assessment Of Interpersonal Traits (Gait), Douglas D. Knowlton Aug 1979

Examination Of The Therapeutic Process In A Juvenile Probation Setting And Further Validation Of The Group Assessment Of Interpersonal Traits (Gait), Douglas D. Knowlton

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was undertaken to examine several questions ranging from simple, direct, detailed examination of juvenile probation officer behavior in a county juvenile court system, to a more technical question—Does this study provide additional validation of the Group Assessment of Interpersonal Traits? In addition, the study locks at the relationship between probation officer's verbal behaviors and their ratings of Therapist Talent.

Twelve juvenile probation officers (full-time and volunteer) and their probationers agreed to have four individual sessions audio recorded. Randomly selected segments of these tapes were rated by two sets of raters. Their verbal behaviors were categorized and ratings …
