Writers And Dreamers: An Exploratory Study Of Ninth-Grade English Students., Linda Peterson Christie
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was, first, to compare the quality of writing that was generated from remembered dreams with other story writing that was created from beginning sentences, second, was to explore the remembered dream world of ninth graders as to the importance, place, and creative use of dreams in waking life.Twenty students, 10 from each of two ninth-grade English classes in a west-central Minnesota junior high school, composed the research population. The two groups of 10 created three pieces of writing, Group A from dreams and Group B from beginning sentences. Differences in quality of writing were measured by …
Children's Understanding Of The Physical Realities Of Death., William Conrad Devereux
Children's Understanding Of The Physical Realities Of Death., William Conrad Devereux
Theses and Dissertations
Children's knowledge of the physical realities of death was explored through the use of an objective answer death concepts questionnaire. A demographic questionnaire was used to identify religious influences and exposure to death-relevant experiences which could influence the acquisition of factual information about death.Knowledge of death was expected to be related to grade level, cognitive level, IQ level, religious influences and death-relevant experiences. Children's exposure to death-relevant experiences was expected to begin at an early age and increase with grade level and with cognitive level. One hundred and thirty-seven children in kindergarten, second, fourth, and sixth grades were individually administered the …
Individual Differences In Information Processing Style As Related To Rorschach W/D Ratio., Lisa Sharon Squire
Individual Differences In Information Processing Style As Related To Rorschach W/D Ratio., Lisa Sharon Squire
Theses and Dissertations
The present study was undertaken to determine whether an over-emphasis on whole vs. large detail locations on the Rorschach Inkblot Test, as assessed by the W/D ratio, would be manifested in individual differences in information processing style. It was hypothesized that subjects with W/D ratios weighted in the whole direction would perform better on visual information processing tasks which require global analysis of the stimulus configuration and which ostensibly are mediated to a greater degree by the right hemisphere. Conversely, it was hypothesized that subjects with W/D ratios weighted in the large detail direction would perform better on information processing …

The Pedestal Effect And Pastors' Friendships, Tegan Blackbird
The Pedestal Effect And Pastors' Friendships, Tegan Blackbird
Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally, the ministry has had a reputation for being a very lonely profession. Although widely acknowledged in the literature, no empirical research seems to be available investigating the nature of this alleged problem. On the basis of information gathered from the literature and fran a number of interviews with several pastors in the Grand Forks area, the present study set out to investigate ministerial loneliness by qualitatively assessing and comparing a) the nature of the friendships of a population of pastors with those of matched control laymen, and b) the amount of discomfort aroused by the presence of those pastors …
Transitional Objects, Hypnotic Phenomena And Personality Characteristics, Keith N. Cohen
Transitional Objects, Hypnotic Phenomena And Personality Characteristics, Keith N. Cohen
Theses and Dissertations
In the current investigation aspects of experience and personality in adult life were objectively assessed in relation to the childhood use of transitional objects. Experiences identified as characteristic of the "intermediate area" included those of deep and intense involvement. Hypnotic susceptibility, "absorption" phenomena, and personal interests and pursuits were measured as experiences representative of this realm. The study also sought to establish further correlative links between early use of transitional objects and adult personality traits and characteristics. Information regarding the early attachment to special inanimate objects was obtained through self- and parental-reports to questionnaires designed to survey parameters of object …

Lignite Liquefaction Using Carbon Monoxide And Water In A Hot-Charge Batch Autoclave, Michael L. Swanson
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of temperature history on the liquefaction of lignite were investigated using the UND hot-charge, time-sampled batch autoclave facility. Approximately two hundred grams of moisture- and ash-free lig nite, one hundred grams of water, four hundred grams of hydrogenated anthracene oil solvent and carbon monoxide gas were reacted in both cold- charge and hot-charge experiments. The oil yields and overall conver sions were determined by extraction with cyclohexane and tetrahydrofuran, respectively. Maximum operating pressures ranged from 3670 psig to 3925 psig and the maximum reaction temperature was approximately 420°C in all cases.
Oil yields and overall conversion ranged from …

Maternal Distance Versus Symbiosis And Toddler-Mother Attachment During The Second Year Of Life, Robert A. Harms
Maternal Distance Versus Symbiosis And Toddler-Mother Attachment During The Second Year Of Life, Robert A. Harms
Theses and Dissertations
This study was undertaken to relate individual differences along a Mahler-derived dimension of maternal distance-symbiosis to Ainsworth's patterns of infant-mother attachment and to assess cross-sectionally the normative appearance of Mahler's subphase of rapprochement (a restoring of close relations with the mother) in the middle of the second year of life. Sixty mother-toddler pairs, 20 each at the toddler ages of 12, 18, and 24 months evenly divided by sex, were observed in the Ainsworth and Wittig laboratory Strange Situation. Toddlers were classified according to the Ainsworth system into Group A (insecurely attached/ avoidant), Group B (securely attached), and Group C …
Perceptual Precedence In Picture Processing, Steven W. Mann
Perceptual Precedence In Picture Processing, Steven W. Mann
Theses and Dissertations
One important assumption of information processing models of human perception is that such processing occurs as a sequence of events or stages which take place over time. Recent investigations (Navon 1977, 1981) have sug gested that the global aspects of a stimulus are perceived at an earlier stage in the time course of processing than are the local elements of the stimulus. Other studies (Kinchla § Wolfe 1979; Martin 1979; Hoffman 1980) have sug gested that neither global forms nor local elements are necessarily perceived prior to the other structural level, but that other factors such as the size of …
Consensus Information In The Newspaper Advice Columns, Danel E. Rubanowitz
Consensus Information In The Newspaper Advice Columns, Danel E. Rubanowitz
Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated the naturalistic use of consis tency, distinctiveness and consensus information, which are the three information variables in Kelley's (1967) covariation model of attribu tion. Newspaper advice columns were used as a naturalistic source of social data.
The first question addressed in this study was whether or not Kelley's (1967) three information variables are ecologically valid. If perceivers in the "real world" actually use covariation information to support or defend their attributions, then it should be possible to reliably locate these pieces of information. If the information is used, it would be possible to examine whether perceivers …
Design Optimization Of Slider-Crank Mechanisms Subject To Coulomb Bearing Friction, Anthony J. Pascuzzi
Design Optimization Of Slider-Crank Mechanisms Subject To Coulomb Bearing Friction, Anthony J. Pascuzzi
Theses and Dissertations
Optimization techniques are applied to the design of slider-crank mechanisms operating as single acting compressors subject to Coulomb bear ing friction. The dynamic force analysis is performed by the solution of a set of nonlinear equations in dimensionless form. The optimization re sults presented are for various cases of inertia, friction, and external loading.
The optimization procedure developed minimizes a weighted sum of the input work and bearing shear stress by adjusting the mechanism's dimensions. The independent dimensions that are varied are the connecting rod length, the offset, and the three bearing radii. The results of the optimization are different …
Informed Consent In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of Current Practices Among Mental Health Professionals, Mark L. Haugen
Informed Consent In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of Current Practices Among Mental Health Professionals, Mark L. Haugen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the current use of informed consent procedures among a systematic sample of social workers and psychologists, as well as a stratified sample of mental health center directors. A brief questionnaire was constructed which listed thirteen of the informed consent issues suggested by several authors in the literature.
A MANOVA and separate univariate ANOVAs were used to assess differences between individual professional and mental health center director groups. Post-hoc analyses revealed that mental health center directors reportedly address three informed consent issues to a greater extent than either individual professional group. These included …
The Effects Of Conceptual Factors On Visual Masking, Damon G. Labarbera
The Effects Of Conceptual Factors On Visual Masking, Damon G. Labarbera
Theses and Dissertations
Potter (1975, 1976) has shown that visual masks can exert effects both at the level of the icon and at higher levels of processing. Her methodology involved presenting pictures in a sequence at very fast rates, in order to mimic naturalistic saccadic viewing. The present study used similar methodology in order to investigate whether a picture which violates an expectation about pictures in that series exerts more of a masking effect than a picture which coincides with the expectation.
Each of 38 subjects was shown 36 sequences of eight pictures. In nine trials, every picture in the trial was drawn …
Teacher Attitudes Toward The Gifted: A Survey Of Grand Forks Elementary Schools, Carol Senger Korynta
Teacher Attitudes Toward The Gifted: A Survey Of Grand Forks Elementary Schools, Carol Senger Korynta
Theses and Dissertations
This research was designed to explore the perceptions of educators in regard to the gifted. Research indicates that there are often misconceptions toward the gifted and a fear of elitism. There is an attitude that a specially gifted child can succeed without special services. However, research shows that one out of five high school dropouts are gifted indicating that the gifted do not succeed on their own. These children's needs can be nurtured through accurate identification and the provision of proper environments organized by knowledgeable educators.
A survey, Teacher Attitude Toward Gifted Education, was constructed specifically for use in this …
The Effects Of Combat Stress On The Personality Of Vietnam Veterans, Philip E. Levinson
The Effects Of Combat Stress On The Personality Of Vietnam Veterans, Philip E. Levinson
Theses and Dissertations
The theoretical and empirical literature on post-traumatic stress disorder in Vietnam era veterans is reviewed, and the problems of the existing data in this area are discussed. In order to understand the effect of combat stress on the personality, 50 combat veterans and 50 noncombat veterans, who were alcohol and/or drug patients at the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospital, were administered the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). The group of combat veterans were further divided into groups of wounded (N = 15) and nonwounded (N = 35) veterans with the assumption that the experience of being wounded is an additional trauma …
