Children's Perceptions Of Social Studies: A Descriptive Study Of The Social Studies Experiences Of Selected Fifth And Sixth-Grade Students., Stephen Ellis Hornstein
Theses and Dissertations
Although there is much research on classroom practices in social studies there is little if any research which describes day-to-day life in social studies classrooms and none at all which describes it from students' perspectives. The intent of this study is to describe social studies instruction from students' perspectives, to document students' attitudes about social studies instruction and to formulate hypotheses about the causes of student attitudes based on children's descriptions and reported attitudes.Thirty-six fifth and sixth grade students were interviewed for the study. The interview consisted of eleven open ended questions designed to elicit descriptions of social studies instruction …

Vasopressin Analogues And Their Effects Upon Arousal, Attention And Memory., Deborah Iilene Couk
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of two vasopressin analogues, arginine vasopressin (AVP) and desmopressin acetate (DDAVP), upon various aspects of arousal, attention and memory were examined in this study. Sixty-two male college students were treated intranasally with either AVP (24 IU), DDAVP (24 IU), or saline. Arousal, attention and memory measures included: the Thayer Activation-Deactivation Adjective Check List (AD-ACL), the Eysenck Personality Inventory Introversion-Extraversion scale, diastolic and systolic blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration rate, digit span, a Sternberg Item Recognition Task, immediate free-recall, delayed free-recall, and recognition. Treatment with vasopressin affected AD-ACL scores, pulse rate, rate of respiration, and motor-responsivity, all of which …

A Conceptual Analysis And Exploratory Investigation Of Christian Development, David Carlisle Dowd
A Conceptual Analysis And Exploratory Investigation Of Christian Development, David Carlisle Dowd
Theses and Dissertations
Based upon an exegesis of relevant Christian scripture, a theory of Christian development was produced. This theory posits eight stages of development moving broadly from faith, through self-discipline, to Christian love. Descriptive characterizations are provided for each of the stages, along with a psychodynamic structure to explain the process of movement from one stage to the next. This theory was compared and contrasted with the theories of Erikson, Kohl- berg, Gleason, and Fowler. Strong parallels were noted between the proposed theory of Christian development and Erikson' s theory of psycho-social development. Relevant empirical studies were briefly surveyed and support for …

Following A Leg Of Mutton, The Pastoral In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Priscilla Homola
Following A Leg Of Mutton, The Pastoral In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Priscilla Homola
Theses and Dissertations
Much critical attention has quite rightly been focused in recent years on the epic and heroic qualities of Roelvaag's Giants in the Earth. However, Giants in the Earth is not all epic--partly because Roelvaag perceives the settling of the Plains by Scandinavian immigrants with mixed feelings: on the one hand, wishing to rekindle in them a sense of their serious destiny in the New World; on the other, longing for a return to the lost values of his own Norwegian youth. Hence, far from glorifying epic struggle or extolling heroic virtues, Roelvaag rather emphasizes pastoral virtues somewhat at variance with …

Conceptual Level, Hypothesis Formation Training And Clinical Judgment, Robert William Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
Conceptual level, hypothesis formation training, college grade point average, counselor preparation level, and age were studied to assess their relationship to clinical judgment. The sample consisted of female volunteer social work students, who were divided into training (26 subjects) and control (14 subjects) groups. The training group received hypothesis formation training, and the control group simply observed a counseling session. The subjects responded to the Paragraph Completion Method (Hunt, Butler, Noy & Rosser, 1978) and the Modified Clinical Assessment Questionnaire.
The responses were analyzed in terms of hypotheses that were designed to address: 1. The extent to which the study …

Attitudes Toward Rape And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Lynn White Eggers
Theses and Dissertations
In order to understand more fully the process of recovery from sexual assault, this study investigated the variables considered to be influential in that process, including the age of the victim, her marital status, the time elapsed since the assault, who the perpetrator was, and where the assault took place. In addition, the victim's beliefs about sexual assault were also assessed, using the Feminist Attitude Toward Rape Scale, as were her perceptions of society's beliefs. Recovery was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory, the Modified Fear Survey, and the Derogatis Symptom Check List.
The subjects were 30 women, ages 18 …
