How Belief In God Impacts Marital Conflict And Resolution For Women Of Faith, Elizabeth Kay Madsen
How Belief In God Impacts Marital Conflict And Resolution For Women Of Faith, Elizabeth Kay Madsen
Theses and Dissertations
Frequent conflict is a significant relationship risk factor for divorce, but it has also been shown that religion strengthens marriages, specifically in ways that give direction and motivation for couples in resolving marital conflict or other marital hardships. Thus, a study of how successful religious couples resolve conflict is pertinent in helping us better understand how to strengthen marriages and families. Our qualitative study of 113 highly religious women of diverse faiths and races found that women's perceived relationship or connection with God reportedly impacted conflict resolution and coping with marital hardship. Results suggest greater reconciliation and unity with the …
Sexual Attitudes And Knowledge Of Southern United States College Students On Risky Sexual Behavior: Moderation By Conservative Religiosity, Sex, And Sexual Double Standards, Andreana Durham
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to examine the relation of sexual attitudes and knowledge on risky sexual behavior (RSB), while including sex, sexual double standards (SDS), and conservative religiosity as moderators. Findings suggested that sexual knowledge, sexual attitudes, and conservative religiosity associated negatively with RSB for female participants. SDS positively associated with RSB for male participants. The interaction of sexual knowledge and SDS on RSB was significant in male participants and indicated that higher sexual knowledge is associated with higher RSB when SDS is higher. The interaction of sexual knowledge and conservative religiosity on RSB was significant in …
Three Rival Versions Of Physical Education: A Macintyrean Analysis Of The Field, Clayton Michael Whalen
Three Rival Versions Of Physical Education: A Macintyrean Analysis Of The Field, Clayton Michael Whalen
Theses and Dissertations
At both the theoretical and applied levels of analysis, the field of physical education is all too often completely incoherent. There appears to be little agreement as to how school-based programs ought to be implemented or what the goals of such programs really are. No two physical educators run their programs exactly the same and, chances are, those physical educators likely have wildly different understandings of their field and its proper place within the education of our youth. Borrowing from the title of moral philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s (1990) book, Three Rival Versions of Moral Enquiry, I’ve chosen to describe the …
Expanding The Emotional Cascade Model Of Borderline Personality Disorder With Negative Thoughts, Thought Control Strategies, Suicide Attempts, And Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Courtney K. Mason
Expanding The Emotional Cascade Model Of Borderline Personality Disorder With Negative Thoughts, Thought Control Strategies, Suicide Attempts, And Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Courtney K. Mason
Theses and Dissertations
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an impairing mental illness and has a core component of emotional dysregulation. Evidence suggests the emotional cascade model describes how this emotional dysregulation leads to engaging in risky and life-threatening behaviors, such as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Specifically, this model describes rumination as a cognitive component that links the emotional and behavioral dysregulation. The current study aimed to expand the model by investigating how individuals with heightened BPD traits engage in NSSI and in cognitive strategies to cope with their negative affect. Specifically, it was investigated whether behaviors like suicide attempts and cognitions differentiated between those …
Reconceptualizing The Relations Between Impulsivity, Psychopathy, Machiavellianism, And Narcissism Using Variable- And Person-Centered Approaches, Karen Kelley
Theses and Dissertations
Psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism are three personality constructs collectively associated with antagonism, callousness, and engagement in socially aversive behaviors. These overlapping personality constructs are theorized to have features that meaningfully distinguish each of them from one another, such as variations in impulsivity. However, investigating the interrelations between existing measures of psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and impulsivity presents several methodological challenges. Five Factor Model (FFM) approaches to these four multidimensional constructs provide a promising avenue for examining the associations between these personality domains and impulsivity. This study examined a comprehensive, multidimensional model of impulsivity (i.e., the UPPS-P model of impulsivity) in relation …
Evaluating The Effects Of Incremental Rehearsal At Increasing Drivers Permit Exam Material Knowledge For Individuals With Asd, Madison Billingsley
Evaluating The Effects Of Incremental Rehearsal At Increasing Drivers Permit Exam Material Knowledge For Individuals With Asd, Madison Billingsley
Theses and Dissertations
Learning to drive represents a rite of passage for many adolescents and young adults, which increases their access to vocational, education, and social opportunities (Almberg et al., 2015; Cox et al., 2012; Lindsay, 2016). When examining licensure rates for individuals with developmental disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder, research demonstrates lower licensure rates and more difficulties obtaining licensure (Almberg et al., 2015; Cox et al., 2012). Most research focusses on teaching on the road or simulation based driving skills to increase licensure rates, however little research addresses the barriers these individuals face obtaining their drivers permit (Huang et al., 2012; Pandolfe, …
Buffering The Strained Relation Between Masculinity And Social Support With Self-Compassion, Nathan Barclay
Buffering The Strained Relation Between Masculinity And Social Support With Self-Compassion, Nathan Barclay
Theses and Dissertations
Men experience high rates of negative health outcomes and often have difficulty identifying and seeking support for their issues. Traditional masculine socialization has been identified as a potential determinant of this effect, as masculine ideals often conflict with prosocial help-seeking behaviors. Men who experience this sort of socialization need better support for their mental health and are less likely to seek it out in a professional setting. Therefore, other models of support, like social support, should be investigated. Additionally, factors that impact the way that men perceive social support should be explored, one of which may be self-compassion. The current …
The Impact Of Economic And Social Factors On New Venture Creation In Saudi Arabia, Nawaf Alharbi
The Impact Of Economic And Social Factors On New Venture Creation In Saudi Arabia, Nawaf Alharbi
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the factors influencing entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia, focusing on economic, social, and cultural aspects. Three hypotheses guide the study: 1) Economic factors. 2) The social environment. 3) There is a positive relationship between prior and subsequent venture creation. Using panel data from 13 regions between 2008 and 2022, findings show that positive economic changes, higher income per capita, lower unemployment, and higher business density significantly boost new venture creation. Access to finance and prior venture creation also positively influence subsequent entrepreneurial activities. However, a higher proportion of foreign workers and marriage rates negatively correlate with new venture …

Examining Barriers In Building Multicultural Competency Within School Psychology Faculty, Orlandria D. Beamon
Theses and Dissertations
The need for multicultural competency in school psychology is crucial for creating inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments. While research has often focused on graduate student perspectives, there's a notable gap regarding faculty members in school psychology programs. Ensuring that faculty are multiculturally competent is essential, and examining factors that influence their competency is imperative. This study explores multicultural competency from the perspectives of school psychology faculty, involving 75 participants who reflected on their interactions with diverse individuals and assessed their program climate regarding multicultural issues. Using the SPCMS-R and the MEI-R measures, the study analyzed the impact of program …
Humblebragging As A Self-Promotional Strategy On Social Media, Sangwon Na
Humblebragging As A Self-Promotional Strategy On Social Media, Sangwon Na
Theses and Dissertations
Humblebragging is a tactic where an individual disguises a boast or brag as a complaint or humility while simultaneously emphasizing their achievements or desired results. According to previous literature, individual athletes' social media postings are seen as branding or self-promotional content to enhance their brand image. However, these posts can also be considered a form of bragging, with sport celebrities trying to hide their true intentions by using humbleness. This strategy is often used by sport celebrities to enhance their brand image. However, this subject remains largely unexplored in sport management literature, primarily due to the lack of a clear …
Adverse Childhood Experiences, Behavioral Problems, And The Role Of Positive Childhood Experiences, Scout Savoy
Adverse Childhood Experiences, Behavioral Problems, And The Role Of Positive Childhood Experiences, Scout Savoy
Theses and Dissertations
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that individuals experience in childhood that have been linked to problems with physical and mental health in adulthood (Felitti et al., 1998). Previous research suggests that ACEs are prevalent in almost two-thirds of youth regardless of location across the world and that when an individual experiences three or more ACEs, their quality-adjusted life expectancy is found to decrease (Carlson et al., 2019; Jia & Lubetkin, 2020). Although ACEs have been associated with negative outcomes, not all individuals who experience trauma exhibit problematic behavior and are considered to have high levels of resilience (Agaiba …
Customers’ Advocacy For Environmentally Friendly Golf Courses: The Role Of Green Brand Image, Feelings Of Gratitude, And Relationship Quality, Taewoong Kyung
Customers’ Advocacy For Environmentally Friendly Golf Courses: The Role Of Green Brand Image, Feelings Of Gratitude, And Relationship Quality, Taewoong Kyung
Theses and Dissertations
The close relationship between sports and the natural environment has been endangered by climate crisis and global warming (Breitbarth et al., 2023; Cunningham et al., 2020; McCullough, 2023; Orr & Inoue, 2019). For this reason, the development of golf courses has been accused of serious impacts on environmental destruction which causes climate change, despite the popularity of golf (Fouillouze et al, 2023). Golf courses have become quite far from the green image. Hence, golf courses began to voluntarily obtain environmental certification (e.g., Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, GEO certified) to protect nature and keep ecosystems sustainable (Gomis et al., 2018; Lee …

Examination Of The Impact Of Discriminatory Legislation On Gender Minority Stress And Suicide Desire And Intent In Gender Minority Adults, Ashley R. Pate
Theses and Dissertations
Suicidal ideation and suicide attempt rates are far higher among gender minority individuals than in the general population. In the wake of an unprecedented number of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation being proposed and passed in 2023 in the United States, this study sought to examine the impact of this legislation on gender minority stress and suicidal desire and intent among gender minority adults. Results indicated that anxiety about the legislation was associated with the desire to die, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and the likelihood of attempting suicide in the future. The perceived impact of the legislation was associated with intent to die …
Ultrasonographic Appearance Of The Spleen Of Growing Kittens Using A High Frequency Linear Transducer, Catana M. Capps
Ultrasonographic Appearance Of The Spleen Of Growing Kittens Using A High Frequency Linear Transducer, Catana M. Capps
Theses and Dissertations
A reticulonodular splenic pattern is commonly associated with neoplastic or infectious etiologies. However, this has been described as an age-related variant in both humans and dogs, likely representing lymphoid follicles. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the ultrasonographic appearance of the spleens of growing kittens mimics the canine presentation. This was a prospective, descriptive study design. Healthy kittens up to 18 months old were scanned using a high frequency linear transducer. A reticulonodular pattern was present in (89%) of spleens. After 4 months of age, there was an overall negative correlation with age and the grade of …
Examining The Impact Of De-Escalation Training For Rural Mississippi Leos: Using Simulation To Assess Behavioral Outcomes, Deepali Manoj Dhruve
Examining The Impact Of De-Escalation Training For Rural Mississippi Leos: Using Simulation To Assess Behavioral Outcomes, Deepali Manoj Dhruve
Theses and Dissertations
People with mental illness (PMI) are at a 67% greater risk of arrest and 16 times greater risk of being killed during a police incident than other civilians. Indeed, law enforcement officers (LEOs) report lacking expertise when addressing mental health calls, and existing trainings aimed at reducing violence in LEO encounters with PMI do not account for challenges specific to rural LEOs. Additionally, many trainings are severely lacking in assessing outcome changes pre- and post-training with more than half of trainings relying on survey-based knowledge subject to social desirability bias and inaccurate self-assessment. This study aimed to address limitations in …
An Examination Of Depressive Symptoms Of African Americans As A Part Of A Complex System, Jenna Kilgore
An Examination Of Depressive Symptoms Of African Americans As A Part Of A Complex System, Jenna Kilgore
Theses and Dissertations
Symptoms associated with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) have become a source of distress and disability throughout the world, and MDD is among the most common disorders diagnosed annually in the United States. Despite this growing epidemic, scientists and practitioners continue to conceptualize MDD using a common-cause model, which suggests MDD is a result of a latent depression entity that gives rise to symptoms. This is particularly problematic in African American populations where some symptoms associated with depression (i.e., irritability and pain or numbness in the body) are different than those listed in the DSM. The current study examined depressive symptoms …
Attrition Rates In The Engineering Industry By Gender And Time, Josiane Kander
Attrition Rates In The Engineering Industry By Gender And Time, Josiane Kander
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigated attrition rates of engineers in the industry. It used historical data to examine trends of attrition based on gender and time. It found that both gender and time were statistically significant in predicting whether an engineer would be working in the industry or not. Males with an engineering degree were 5.2 times more likely to work in the engineering industry than females with an engineering degree. Additionally, as engineers progress through the profession, they tend to leave it altogether more often than staying in the profession for their entire careers. Pivotal points where engineers leave the industry …
Evaluating Depictions Of Representation: An Analysis Of Female Law Enforcement Officers In Prime-Time Fictional Entertainment Television, Linda Christine Williams
Evaluating Depictions Of Representation: An Analysis Of Female Law Enforcement Officers In Prime-Time Fictional Entertainment Television, Linda Christine Williams
Theses and Dissertations
This study looked at uniformed female municipal police officers in fictional entertainment television shows that were centered around law enforcement. Building on previous research by Evans and Davies, this replication study uses a content analysis model to look at city level police, as opposed to the female federal agents from Booker’s 2018 study. This project builds on earlier work that looked at portrayals of female law enforcement officers in entertainment television and applies a framework of Representative Bureaucracy, Cultivation Theory, and Social Construction of Reality to find at their intersection, answers about the construction of the street-level bureaucrats who are …

The purpose of this qualitative, case study research project is to explore international student-athletes’ experiences at U.S. higher education institutions, probing how well nonimmigrant visa holders are prepared for postgraduate success through their college experiences. Six collaborators engaged in photo elicitation interviews to provide insight into how they have navigated their international student identity and student-athlete identity. Collaborators each shared 10-15 media files representative of their experiences, and then they engaged in 90-minute interviews to talk about what their selections meant to them and why they were significant. The frameworks of agency, self-authorship, and voice were used to gauge how …
Investigating The Effects Of Multiple Concussions On Neuropsychological Performance, Michaela S. Patoilo
Investigating The Effects Of Multiple Concussions On Neuropsychological Performance, Michaela S. Patoilo
Theses and Dissertations
It has been well-established in the literature that a history of concussion makes individuals more susceptible to sustaining subsequent concussions. However, there is little neuropsychological evidence of how sustaining multiple lifetime concussions affects cognitive functioning in the general adult population. It is known from previous traumatic brain injury and single concussion literature that impairments in cognitive performance across domains often follow the initial injury, and exploratory studies have shown that multiple concussions can have a measurable impact on cognition. However, existing research is often limited by its reliance on archival data and abbreviated neuropsychological batteries. Therefore, the current study aimed …

This study examined academic self-efficacy, achievement motivation, and academic success among international graduate students at a large university in the southeastern United States. Specifically, the research focused on three dimensions of academic self-efficacy (i.e., English language self-efficacy, coursework self-efficacy, and social self-efficacy) and three dimensions of achievement motivation (i.e., intrinsic value, expectancy, and attainment utility) to determine their impact on academic success measured by academic satisfaction and academic achievement. Data were collected from 101 international graduate students who completed Questionnaire of English Self-Efficacy (QESE; Wang, 2004); the College Self-Efficacy Inventory (CSEI; Solberg et al., 1993); the Expectancy-Value Motivation Questionnaire (EVMQ; …
How Teacher-Student Relationships Affect Child And Adolescent Resilience, Tashina R. Vanderwoude
How Teacher-Student Relationships Affect Child And Adolescent Resilience, Tashina R. Vanderwoude
Theses and Dissertations
The significance of positive relationships, particularly between teachers and students, in fostering resilience among children is well-established. While various studies have delved into the dynamics and impacts of these relationships, there is a notable gap in research that directly assesses how teacher-student bonds influence students’ resilience levels. This study aims to bridge the gap by examining students’ perceptions of their relationships with teachers and how these perceptions correlate with their reported resilience levels. Participants (n = 59) included middle and high school students recruited from a school district in northeastern Mississippi. Participants completed surveys measuring their perception of their relationship …
Movement Ecology And Nest-Site Selection Of Rock Iguanas Across A Gradient Of Anthropogenic Disturbance, James Walter Wehsener
Movement Ecology And Nest-Site Selection Of Rock Iguanas Across A Gradient Of Anthropogenic Disturbance, James Walter Wehsener
Theses and Dissertations
Analysis of animal movement has been integrated into a framework of four components: internal state, motion capacity, navigation capacity, and external factors (Nathan et al., 2008). We used this framework to enhance understanding of movement behavior in the 15 West Indian rock iguana (Cyclura) taxa and to inform conservation management. Our review found that adult female Cyclura large-scale movement is primarily driven by nesting and migrations. Nest site selection also influences hatchling dispersal, but few studies identify preferred habitats for nesting females. Anthropogenic impacts on nesting ecology are largely unexplored, especially in Cyclura carinata. We studied C. carinata nesting ecology …

Unraveling The Evolution Of Moral Panic: A Comparative Analysis Of School Shootings, Jiavonna Devine Webb
Theses and Dissertations
School shootings in the United States have garnered significant attention. Since 1999, several high-profile school shootings have taken place across the U.S. in Connecticut, Virginia, Florida, etc. The phenomenon of school shootings and the resultant moral panic is explored by examining media coverage to understand how the media contributes to public responses to these tragic incidents. Although school shootings tend to receive attention, we do not know how this attention can differ across school shootings. This study uses the moral panic framework to assess how national newspaper coverage portrays the Sandy Hook Elementary and Robb Elementary school shootings. I find …
The Impact Of Stimulus Set Size On Efficiency Of Sight Words Training, Junchen Guo
The Impact Of Stimulus Set Size On Efficiency Of Sight Words Training, Junchen Guo
Theses and Dissertations
Reading skills are widely recognized as fundamental abilities, crucial not only for academic success but also for participation in social activities and navigating interpersonal challenges. In the early formation of reading abilities, mastery of sight words is instrumental in effectively enhancing reading proficiency, particularly for individuals lacking foundational reading skills. In educational practice, flashcard intervention stands as a widely utilized instructional approach. When Kodak et al. (2020) first introduced the concept of stimulus set size and its impact on the efficiency of skill acquisition interventions, they examined differences in training efficiency among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) when exposed …
Living With Mamaw And Pawpaw: Examining The Impact Of Context When Raising One’S Grandchildren, Rachel K. Scott
Living With Mamaw And Pawpaw: Examining The Impact Of Context When Raising One’S Grandchildren, Rachel K. Scott
Theses and Dissertations
The parenting literature has long explored the influence that socioeconomic status has on parenting practices, but more recent theorists have suggested that contextual factors may influence or explain this relation in some capacity. The current study sought to explore the influence of these contextual factors within a nationwide sample of caregiving grandparents. The results indicate that grandparental financial well-being, depressive symptoms, scarcity of resources, and grandparenting practices share significant associations. Further, contextual factors (i.e., grandparental depressive symptoms and access to resources) mediate the relation between financial well-being and both the positive and negative grandparenting practices that are employed. These findings …
Longitudinal Influences Of Parental Relationships On Positive Adolescent Functioning, Rebekah Buckley Sparks
Longitudinal Influences Of Parental Relationships On Positive Adolescent Functioning, Rebekah Buckley Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the longitudinal influences of parental relationships – romantic, co-parenting, and parent-child – on positive adolescent functioning. Utilizing data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, this study investigates how various dimensions of parental relationships impact adolescent well-being at age 15, as measured by the EPOCH scale. Grounded in Attachment Theory and the Life Course Perspective, this research highlights the interconnectedness of early parental interactions and their long-term effects on adolescents’ emotional and social development. Key findings indicate that supportive and stable parental relationships significantly enhance adolescents’ engagement, perseverance, optimism, connectedness, and happiness. The study emphasizes …
Growth Kinetics & Optical Properties Of Blue-Emitting Cspbbr3 Perovskites, Rongjing Yan
Growth Kinetics & Optical Properties Of Blue-Emitting Cspbbr3 Perovskites, Rongjing Yan
Theses and Dissertations
Perovskites have raised interest due to their unique physical and optical properties in many fields. Adjustable bandgap, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), and a wide range of emitting colors make perovskite promising for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) devices. Up to now, too little attention has been given to understanding the growth mechanism of perovskite. Hence, establishing the growth kinetic model is a priority research focus. We explore that low temperatures could slow down the reaction rate of forming perovskite, which provides a chance for monitoring the growth kinetic of perovskite. Additionally, the low external quantum efficiency (EQE) of blue-emitting perovskites hinders …
The Impact Of Sexual Violence, Social Reactions To Disclosure, Coping, And Intersecting Identities On Ptsd Risk, Sabrina Dicarlo
The Impact Of Sexual Violence, Social Reactions To Disclosure, Coping, And Intersecting Identities On Ptsd Risk, Sabrina Dicarlo
Theses and Dissertations
Sexual violence (SV) affects millions of people, with an estimated 24.8 – 43.6% of people in the United States reporting at least one form of SV in their lifetime. SV has been associated with the development of negative outcomes such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). There is a robust body of evidence which demonstrates the impact that social reactions to SV and coping can have on higher post-traumatic stress (PTS) symptoms. Furthermore, studies have shown that individuals from marginalized communities (e.g., racial/ethnic, gender, sexual orientation) may be disproportionately impacted, with greater exposure to SV, negative social reactions, and PTS. Studies …
Exploring The Intergenerational Links Between Parent And Child Couple Conflict Styles: Attachment Behaviors And Forgiveness As Moderators, Ashley Forbush
Exploring The Intergenerational Links Between Parent And Child Couple Conflict Styles: Attachment Behaviors And Forgiveness As Moderators, Ashley Forbush
Theses and Dissertations
Conflict is a fundamental element of couple relationships, and the styles of conflict partners use can either enhance or undermine couples' relationship satisfaction and stability. Previous research has found clear links between parent and adult children's conflict strategies, but little is known about how adult children can change their conflict approach from what they observed in their family of origin, especially when they come from homes with dysfunctional forms of conflict. To better understand what factors help children change their style of conflict, the current study used data from 1,077 married couples from the CREATE study. Multinomial logit regression was …
