Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams Jan 1975

Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams

Theses and Dissertations

In this study the distribution and effects of bacterial endotoxin were examined. Adult male BALB/c and adult male DUB/ICR mice were used in all experiments. Endotoxic activity of a number of strains from three genera of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Bacteroides, and Listeria, was detected using vincristine-treated mice as sensitized indicators for endotoxin and resistance to purified endotoxin induced by pretreatment with selected bacteria. Also, the effect of bacterial endotoxin and endotoxin-like substances on the course of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in mice, caused by Naegleria fowleri, was assessed.

The League Of Arab States And Its Role In The Arab World, Lutfi M. Tayeb Aug 1974

The League Of Arab States And Its Role In The Arab World, Lutfi M. Tayeb

Theses and Dissertations

This paper is concerned with the Arab League and its role in the Arab world. Its primary concern is with Arab unity, the Palestine problem, Arab disputes, and cooperation among Arab states.

Since the establishment of the League in 1945 as an organization through which the various Arab states could work together by voluntary cooperation in all spheres, and as a means toward achievement of Arab unity, many important developments in the Arab world, both in the internal and external fields took place, and led to instability in the Arab world.

The political and social revolutions in the Arab world …

Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens Aug 1974

Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens

Theses and Dissertations

Cartilage from newborn mice homozygous for chondrodysplasia contains normal quantities of protein and chondroitin sulfate. Mutant fetal cartilage incorporates normal amounts of sulfate, glucose, and glucosamine. Overnight rinsing with water removes about 25% of the incorporated sulfur and existing uronic acid from mutant ribs and about 55% from mutant limbs. Control ribs and limbs are affected very little by such a rinse. The diffusability of chondroitin sulfate (represented by incorporated sulfur and uronic acid) may be due to a lack of covalent bond formation between chondroitin sulfate and collagen.

Synthesis, Structure And Chirality Of Some Neutral Cobalt (Iii) Complexes, David J. Seematter May 1974

Synthesis, Structure And Chirality Of Some Neutral Cobalt (Iii) Complexes, David J. Seematter

Theses and Dissertations

Structures are assigned to the six stereoisomers of the complex 2 , 4-pentanedionatobis(S-alaninato)cobalt(III) and to the diastereomers of bis(2, 4-pentanedionato)S-aminoacidatocobalt(III), where the S-amino acid is S-alanine, S-valine, N-methyl-S-alanine and N-methyl-S-valine. Adsorption column chromatography on alumina was used to separate these neutral complexes which are soluble in water and non-aqueous solvents. Electronic absorption spectra are interpreted in assigning geometric isomers and C-O bond anisotropic deshielding arguments are applied to proton nmr chemical shifts in making chiral assignments of the helical diastereomers. A comparison is made between C-O bond deshielding and N-D steric compression. The proton nmr assignments are shown to be …

How Stated Purposes For Reading Affect Reading Comprehension Scores Of Fifth Grade Students In A Midwestern Suburban School District, Larry M. Brady May 1974

How Stated Purposes For Reading Affect Reading Comprehension Scores Of Fifth Grade Students In A Midwestern Suburban School District, Larry M. Brady

Theses and Dissertations

The Problem: The purpose of this investigation was to study the performance of fifth grade students on reading comprehension under two conditions: (1) when stated purposes for reading were provided prior to reading, and (2) when stated purposes were not provided prior to reading. A second purpose of the investigation was to determine whether the effect of providing purposes for reading is different at various cognitive levels.

The Procedure: The sample for this investigation was comprised of students enrolled in the thirty-two fifth grade classrooms of Independent School District #191, Burnsville, Minnesota. The subjects were assigned by classroom unit to …

Macrocyclic Polyether Sulfide Syntheses, The Preparation Of Thia-Crown-3, 4, 6, And 7 Compounds, Yau-Kwong Joseph Hui

Theses and Dissertations

Macrocyclic polyether sulfides have been prepared by reacting an oligoethylene glycol dichloride with a dithiol or sodium sulfide in ethanol. The following new compounds were prepared: 1-thia-(9-crown-3), 1,4-dithia-(9-crown-3), 1,4-dithia-(12-crown-4), 1,4,7-trithia-(12-crown-4), 1-thia-(18-crown-6), I,4-dithia-(18-crown-6), 1,7-dithia-(18-crown-6), 1,4,7-trithia-(18-crown-6), 1,7-dithia-(21-crown-7), 1,4,7-trithia-(21-crown-7). Four other previously reported macrocyclic polyether sulfides were also prepared. The symmetry of the nmr spectra of these compounds give added evidence for the proposed ring structures. The following subjects were presented and discussed: studies of cyclization by-products, dependence of cyclization yield on the size of the rings, high dilution principle and its application, medium-sized rings, effect of hetero-atoms on cyclization and melting point …

Aspects Of Salt Tolerance Of Salicornia Pacifica Standl. Var. Utahensis (Tidestrom) Munz, Dennis J. Hansen Apr 1974

Aspects Of Salt Tolerance Of Salicornia Pacifica Standl. Var. Utahensis (Tidestrom) Munz, Dennis J. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Aspects of salt tolerance of Salicornia pacifica were investigated. Survival of this plant in a saline environment is due to many interacting factors. A soil pH of 7.5 to 8.0 +- 0.2 and a constant sub-surface soil moisture level of 25 to 35% are necessary for plant survival. A fluctuating lower soil moisture leevel and higher pH favor etablishment of Distichlis stricta. The ion content in S. pacifica remained constant despite increased moisture stress throughout the growing season due to accumulation of salts which were significantly higher in the surface soil layers than in the subsurface layers around the roots. …

An Analysis Of Visual Religious Symbols Appearing In The Improvement Era, Ensign, And New Era Published By The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints From 1952-1972, Carl Landus Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes the appearance of eighty visual religious symbols in the Improvement Era, Ensign, and New Era, published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1952-1972. The study notes their frequency and distribution as well as noting their size, the medium used to render them and the correlation of their religious meanings to the articles they illustrate.

The findings of this study indicate that visual religious symbols are used and that many of them have a high degree of correlation to the articles they illustrate.

This study gives suggestions to those artists who …
