Biochemical Characterization Of The Axolemmal Mitogen For Cultured Schwann Cells, Mark A. Decoster
Biochemical Characterization Of The Axolemmal Mitogen For Cultured Schwann Cells, Mark A. Decoster
Theses and Dissertations
The molecule(s) involved at the axon plasma membrane (axolemma) which causes Schwann cells to proliferate has been investigated by three biochemical techniques: 1) Alkaline extraction of axolemma resulted in recovery of 95% of the mitogenic activity and 50% of the protein in the membrane-bound portion of the axolemma. 2) The axonal mitogen for Schwann cells may be associated with heparan sulfate proteoglycans at the axonal surface. Treatment of axolemma with heparitinase, which cleaves the glycosidic bonds of sulfated glycosaminoglycans, allowed mitogenic activity to be solubilized. 3) Treatment of axolemma with heparin, a highly sulfated glycosaminoglycan analogous to heparan sulfate, resulted …
Characterization Of Steroid-17,20-Desmolase And 20Α-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase From Clostridium Scindens, Amy Elizabeth Krafft
Characterization Of Steroid-17,20-Desmolase And 20Α-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase From Clostridium Scindens, Amy Elizabeth Krafft
Theses and Dissertations
Clostridium scindens is an obligate anaerobe isolated from the normal intestinal flora of man. It is the only bacterium known at present to synthesize both steroid-17,20-desmolase and 20α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (ZOα-HSDH). This study was undertaken to characterize these neutral steroid transforming reactions in extracts of C. scindens; to purify and characterize the enzymes responsible for side-chain cleavage and 20α- hydroxysteroid oxidoreduction and to clone the genes encoding these enzymes with a view towards studying the mechanism of induction by steroids in a prokaryotic system. Both enzymes were found to be co-inducible in cells cultured in the presence of 17α-hydroxysteroids. In cell …
Immunomodulators In Senescent Mice, Kevin R. Mccormick
Immunomodulators In Senescent Mice, Kevin R. Mccormick
Theses and Dissertations
The suppression of the immune response in senescent animals, including humans, is not complete and may be ameliorated by specific interventions. Previous studies have suggested that the replacement of thymus factors lost with age may rejuvenate senescent immune function. Similarly, exogenous growth hormone has been reported to improve senescent immune function in certain mammals. Other studies with the immunomodulator PSK claim to restore tumor-induced immunosuppression even in aged mice. This project investigated the abilities of thymus supernatant, ovine growth hormone, and PSK to rejuvenate different
parameters of the senescent immune response.

The Future Of The Small Business Administration And Their Lending Program, Gregory D. Shirley
Theses and Dissertations
The SBA is one of many federal agencies that are being scrutinized as to the use of the funds they receive from the Federal Government. The SBA's loan programs have been criticized for not being cost effective. This paper will examine the types of loans the SBA makes, the cost of these loans and the procedures for determining who obtains the loans. There are major flaws in the way the SBA manages its current loan portfolio. These flaws have resulted in an above average rate of default on SBA loans. Chapter III examines these faults. Chapter IV deals with solutions …

It Is estimated that alcohol plays a factor in between 35 and 64 c'-rcent of all fatal crashes and between 6 and 25 percent for non-fatal accidents, resulting in alcohol .being involved in about half of the roughly 50,000 annual traffic fatalities in the United States. Clearly, drinking-and driving is a major contributor in both the severity and the frequency of traffic accidents.
The basic concept of deterrence states that people will refrain from behavior defined as socially-unaccc.ptable if the resulting perception and fear of penalties (or sanctions) against such action are adequately undesirable in comparison to the potential benefits …
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Information Content And Readership In Agricultural Advertising, Nathan J. Huso
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Information Content And Readership In Agricultural Advertising, Nathan J. Huso
Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between information content and Starch readership scores in The Farmer magazine from 1979 through 1985 was investigated. The information content of the agricultural advertisements was determined through content analysis using criteria developed to assess the amount of information that contributes to a rational buying decision. The results indicated that 99.4 percent of the advertisements contained information. There was a decrease in the average number of information cues per advertisement over time. There were no significant positive correlations between the information content and the readership score over time for any of the agricultural product categories studied. There were several …

Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the situation surrounding the stock market crash of 1987. The research was conducted in current literature and government reports. The goal of the study is to provide a background on the operations of the stock markets, examine factors leading to and contributing to the crash of 1987, and compare the crash of 1987 to the crash of 1929 in order to provide possible insight to weaknesses in the market system.
The conclusions support specific recommendations that are designed to correct market inefficiencies. These recommendations include increasing margin requirements on index futures, monitoring the performance of specialists, and …

Lysosomal Enzymes In Undifferentiated And Differentiated Hl-60 Cells, Julie J. Ackerman
Lysosomal Enzymes In Undifferentiated And Differentiated Hl-60 Cells, Julie J. Ackerman
Theses and Dissertations
The human promyelocytic leukemia cell line HL-60 has been studied extensively since the time of it's discovery and has been proven to be a valuable tool for the study of the differentiation process. The capacity of the HL-60 cell line to differentiate to macrophage-like cells, which may be immunologically competent, has proven to be invaluable in the study of these cells as a model for macrophage function. A number of hydrolytic enzymes are characteristically found in macrophages. In an effort to further characterize diferentiated HL-60 cells as macrophages, the location and concentration of a number of these enzymes was determined. …

Wallace Stevens And The Dao, Jianer Lin
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studies Wallace Stevens' poetry from the perspective of Daoism (Taoism). It consists of eight chapters. After brief surveys of Stevens' own references to and contact with China in Chapter 1 and of the critical history of this subject in Chapter 2 and a brief introduction of Daoism in Chapter 3, the dissertation concentrates on the discussion of Stevens' poetry in terms of Daoism in the remaining five chapters. Each of these chapters deals with one particular aspect of Dao as embedded in Stevens' writings. Chapter 4 considers the similarity in Stevens' and the Daoist view of reality, which …

Patco Strike: A New Beginning For Labor Relations, Michael H. Grine
Theses and Dissertations
While the actual events of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) strike against the federal government have faded into history, the results of the strike will live forever in the new management/labor relationship that exists, not only in the federal government, but all levels of government and civilian enterprise. The results of the disastrous failure of the strike destroyed thousands of careers and left all levels of organized labor to foresee their now limited options available for negotiations with management.
This independent study will attempt to inform the reader of the causes of the PATCO disaster and the miscalculations …

Federal Narcotic Violators And The Dispositions Received Through The Courts With An Emphasis On Cocaine Offenders, Phyllis Rena Baker
Federal Narcotic Violators And The Dispositions Received Through The Courts With An Emphasis On Cocaine Offenders, Phyllis Rena Baker
Theses and Dissertations
The United states has been plagued with the problem of illicit drug use for many years. Drug abuse has continued to increase and is prevalent among all races and social classes of people. The question is what efforts have been or are being made in order to deter the influx of drugs into the country along with stopping the suppliers of these drugs and what has hindered the effectiveness of these efforts.
The theory of deterrence was applied to this problem because the model presumes that the punishment of criminal acts could deter potential offenders by making the negative consequences …
