Technology: An Imperative In Schools Today, Maria Malanga
Technology: An Imperative In Schools Today, Maria Malanga
Theses and Dissertations
This study identified, prioritized, and fulfilled technological needs of faculty and staff at an elementary school. A list of technological skills in ascending hierarchical order was devised. From the list, a needs analysis was devised. Through the use of the survey, the intern was able to glean a holistic view of the needs of the faculty. Due to financial constraints, the intern provided workshops to fulfill the needs. A comparison of skills both before the workshops and again afterward, showed a significant increase in computer competency in five of the eight indicators-specifically the ability to recognize hardware components, power up …

In recent years there has been a substantial increase in the number of Title IX lawsuits brought against secondary institutions.
The purpose of this study was to perform a Title IX "self-audit" of the Salem High School Athletic Department and its programs. It was designed to identify any problems and recommend solutions.
It also provides a method for continued self-examination for the Salem City School District and any other secondary institutions interested in determining their Title …
Interval Matching And Control For Hexahedral Mesh Generation Of Swept Volumes, Jason F. Shepherd
Interval Matching And Control For Hexahedral Mesh Generation Of Swept Volumes, Jason F. Shepherd
Theses and Dissertations
Surface meshing algorithms require certain relationships among the number of intervals on the curves that bound the surface. Assigning the number of intervals to all of the curves in the model such that all relationships are satisfied is called interval assignment. Volume meshing algorithms also require certain relationships among the numbers of intervals on each of the curves on the volume. These relationships are not always captured by surface meshing requirements. This thesis presents a news technique for automatically identifying volume constraints. In this technique, volume constraints are grouped with surface constraints and are solved simultaneously. A sweepable volume has …

Analysis Of Usaf Battlelabs' Communication Infrastructure Over Various Protocols, Rocky A. Favorito, David M. Mcillece
Analysis Of Usaf Battlelabs' Communication Infrastructure Over Various Protocols, Rocky A. Favorito, David M. Mcillece
Theses and Dissertations
As a result of the doctrines exposed in the Air Force's "Global Engagement: A Vision for the 21st Century Air Force," the concept of a "Battlelab" was devised to support and develop the key warfighting capabilities needed in the next century. Although geographically separated, these labs must have the capability to exchange information with each other in a "Virtual Battlelab Environment" (VBE). Although many types of data will be exchanged, only variable-bit-rate (VBR) video and distributed interactive simulation (DIS) traffic are modeled in the VBE. The research described in this thesis utilizes a systems engineering approach to investigate the performance …
Validation Of The Gallagher Protonospheric Model, Kelly M. Law
Validation Of The Gallagher Protonospheric Model, Kelly M. Law
Theses and Dissertations
Ionospheric models are used in many systems throughout the Department of Defense: for example, they are useful in correcting range errors in radio signals. However, correction models don't incorporate the protonosphere, the torus-shaped plasma volume above the ionosphere. The Gallagher Protonospheric Model, recently incorporated into the Parameterized Ionospheric Model 1.7 (PIM 1.7), was validated against protonospheric total electron content (PTEC) measurements made by the GPS system. Gallagher model calculations of slant PTEC for Pittsburgh ground station looking south with a raypath at an elevation of 26 degrees were compared against GPS PTEC measurements for the same configuration derived from the …
Laser Beam Combining And Cleanup Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In Multi-Mode Optical Fibers, Blake C. Rodgers
Laser Beam Combining And Cleanup Via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering In Multi-Mode Optical Fibers, Blake C. Rodgers
Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this thesis was to demonstrate the feasibility of combining and cleaning up multiple laser beams via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) in a multi-mode optical fiber. Beam combining via SBS in an optical fiber is of interest because of the low SBS threshold power in an optical fiber allowing low power diode laser beams to be combined into one high power beam. SBS theory and some of the important historical results are described briefly. The experimental results clearly indicate that SBS in multi-mode optical fiber can indeed combine laser beams and clean up the beams at the …
Double Layer Effects On Shock Wave Propagation, Shannon L. Walker
Double Layer Effects On Shock Wave Propagation, Shannon L. Walker
Theses and Dissertations
An analysis and assessment of two mechanisms in plasma shock interactions was conducted under conditions typically encountered in a weakly ionized glow discharge. The mechanisms of a spatially-dependent electron temperature and additional electron impact ionization at the shock front were examined for effects on shock structure and propagation. These mechanisms were incorporated into an existing one-dimensional, time-dependent, fluid dynamics code that uses the Riemami problem as a basis and numerically solves the Euler equations for two fluids: the neutral gas and the charged component. The spatial variation in electron temperature was modeled as a shock-centered rise in temperature. Additional ionization …
A Trade-Off Analysis For Quality Of Service In Real-Time Voice Over Ip, Tuncel Altunbasak
A Trade-Off Analysis For Quality Of Service In Real-Time Voice Over Ip, Tuncel Altunbasak
Theses and Dissertations
During the past several years, there has been a significant increase in interest in the use of packetized audio over packet-switched networks due to economic and technical feasibility. However, distribution of real-time voice traffic is basically different from traditional reliable data transfer since continuous voice is sensitive to end-to-end delays and variations of delays. The distribution of continuous voice across a packet-switched network requires consideration of encoding schemas, end-to-end network delays, delay variations, and packet loss, all of which significantly affect the playback quality at the receiving side. There is a trade-off among these factors that affects the quality of …
Strategies For Steganalysis Of Bitmap Graphics Files, Christopher J. Fogle
Strategies For Steganalysis Of Bitmap Graphics Files, Christopher J. Fogle
Theses and Dissertations
Steganography is the art and science of communicating through covert channels. The goal of steganography is to hide the fact that a message is even being transmitted. In the context of today's digital world, this ancient practice is enjoying resurgence due to the plethora of hiding places made possible by modern information media. Of particular concern is the use of graphics image files to conceal both legitimate and criminal communications.
Trade-Off Analysis Of Communications Capabilities Of Inter-Satellite Links, Andrew J. Feltman
Trade-Off Analysis Of Communications Capabilities Of Inter-Satellite Links, Andrew J. Feltman
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis designs, develops, and uses software Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to analyze the communications capabilities of Radio Frequency (RF) Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs). The GUIs are geared towards analyzing the proposed ISLs of the Discoverer II program, but are general enough to permit analysis of any free-space RF ISLs. Discoverer II is a demonstration program of low-earth orbiting satellites and is primarily focused on satellite-based sensor technology. This thesis shows RF ISLs can meet the program requirement to broadcast the sensor data back to CONUS in near-real-time. The GUIs operate in real-time and explore trade-offs in the communications capability by …
Computation Of Scattering From Bodies Of Revolution Using An Entire-Domain Basis Implementation Of The Moment Method, Arthur P. Ford Iv
Computation Of Scattering From Bodies Of Revolution Using An Entire-Domain Basis Implementation Of The Moment Method, Arthur P. Ford Iv
Theses and Dissertations
Research into improved calibration targets for measurement of radar cross-section has created a need for the ability to accurately compute the scattering from perfectly conducting bodies of revolution. Common computational techniques use Moment Method codes that employ subdomain basis functions to expand the unknown current density. This approach has its shortcomings. Large numbers of basis functions are required, and increasing the number of basis functions to improve accuracy after an initial computation requires re-computation of previous results and lost processing time. This research involves using basis functions that have as their domain the entire length of the surface. Entire-domain basis …
High-Grade Paper Recycling: A Program Management Perspective, Rodger L. Carter
High-Grade Paper Recycling: A Program Management Perspective, Rodger L. Carter
Theses and Dissertations
Recycling of high-grade paper is one method of reducing the use of natural resources and the amount of waste being emitted into the environment, both in the process of manufacturing and in the disposal of unneeded documents. The Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) is a significant user of high-grade paper, thus recycling represents a potential saving to society in the form of lessened negative impact on the environment as the result of AFMC operations. The possibility also exists for AFMC to reduce operating costs. The purpose of this study is to explore means of reducing high-grade paper disposal by AFMC, …

Air Force Space Command has a mission to provide real-time, survivable, and enduring communications, surveillance, environmental monitoring, navigation, and warning....according to Air Force Space Handbook - A War Fighters Guide to Space. In order to prevent disruption of the critical networks in Space Command, a vulnerability assessment must be performed. The set of components called a vulnerability set, which could cause network disruption, must be identified and prioritized. In order to move beyond subjective prioritization, implementation of a quantitative methodology that measures the value of each vulnerability set is needed. This thesis proposes a technique for vulnerability assessment of a …
Structural Emergence And The Collaborative Behavior Of Autonomous Nano-Satellites, Daniel J. Petrovich
Structural Emergence And The Collaborative Behavior Of Autonomous Nano-Satellites, Daniel J. Petrovich
Theses and Dissertations
The collaborative behavior of nano-satellites in a zero-gravity environment is explored, and satellite characteristics are proposed that maximize constellation robustness and minimize manufacturing costs. Behavioral algorithms are proposed to facilitate both swarming and structural formation and are validated using the Structural Emergence Simulator (STEMS) Graphical User Interface (GUl). A payload of multiple satellites is placed in a zero-gravity environment and released to re-configure autonomously into a pre-designed structure. Data transmission between satellites is not permitted during the swarming phase of the structure formation mission. A binary behavior algorithm is invented that produces a direction and magnitude solution to the satellite …
A Climatology-Based Model For Long-Term Prediction Of Radar Beam Refraction, Todd S. Pittman
A Climatology-Based Model For Long-Term Prediction Of Radar Beam Refraction, Todd S. Pittman
Theses and Dissertations
The National Air Intelligence Center, WPAFB, OH, needs more accurate predictions of radar beam refraction. A new mode was developed for this thesis replacing the standard atmosphere approach with raytracing and climatology. Usually a microwave radio beam bends towards the earth with a radius of curvature greater than the earth's surface. However, seasonal and climatic variations influence the bending, and at times create temperature or moisture inversions that redirect the energy along the earth's surface leaving radio holes where there is no coverage. This model uses iterative raytracing to determine the most direct path from radar to target through the …
Antenna Gain Enhancement Using A Photonic Band Gap Reflector, Karl C. Schloer
Antenna Gain Enhancement Using A Photonic Band Gap Reflector, Karl C. Schloer
Theses and Dissertations
Scientists have long known that periodic structures can filter electromagnetic (EM) waves. In the last decade, extension of one- and two-dimensionally periodic structures into a third periodic dimension has produced photonic band gap (PBG) structures. A PBG structure is characterized by its omnidirectional stop band at a set of frequencies determined by the structure's periodicity and permittivity. In the present research, we investigate such a structure as an antenna reflector. We aim to develop a modeling approach that provides accurate computations of PBG behavior without relying on massively parallel processing. We also construct and measure the bulk reflection and transmission …

Biodegradation Of Aircraft Deicing Fluid Components In Soil, Baron W. Burke
Theses and Dissertations
Aircraft de-icing fluids (ADFs) are used worldwide to ensure safe aircraft operations. This research effort was conducted to analyze the biodegradation effects of two chemical components of ADFs, propylene glycol (PG) and tolyltriazole (TTA), in a high-clay soil. The research used four test methods; automated respirometry, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), microbial colony population counts (MCPC), and agar well diffusion tests (AWDT). The research was partitioned into two phases of investigation. Phase-one analyzed individual and combined ADF chemical components on uncontaminated soil. The presence of TTA, from 25 - 1,000 mg/kg, reduced the maximum respiration rate of 1,000 mg/kg PG …

This objective was addressed through answering the following questions: (1) What cost and time constraints do the decision-makers have in developing remediation cost estimates; (2) What degree of accuracy do the decision-makers require in cost estimates; (3) What estimating models are available for determining costs of remediation activities; (4) Have models been used to estimate remediation activities' costs at Korean installations; and (5) …
Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Cosolvent Flushing To Treat Groundwater Contamination Source Areas, Stacey L. Anason
Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Cosolvent Flushing To Treat Groundwater Contamination Source Areas, Stacey L. Anason
Theses and Dissertations
Dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in the zone beneath the water table can be a virtually permanent source of groundwater contamination that cannot be remediated by currently available technologies. Cosolvent flushing is a new technology that has the potential to remediate these sites and could pose a solution to the problem of DNAPL source areas. A computer model was developed to determine the cost and time to remediate an aquifer using cosolvent flushing. Included in the model is a module to calculate the costs of recycling the alcohol that is used as the cosolvent. The model was validated using site …
Optimal Pulsed Pumping Schedule Using Calculus Of Variation Methodology, Tay W. Johannes
Optimal Pulsed Pumping Schedule Using Calculus Of Variation Methodology, Tay W. Johannes
Theses and Dissertations
Application of a variational optimization technique has demonstrated the potential strength of pulsed pumping operations for use at existing pump-and-treat aquifer remediation sites. The optimized pulsed pumping technique has exhibited notable improvements in operational effectiveness over continuous pumping. The optimized pulsed pumping technique has also exhibited an advantage over uniform time intervals for pumping and resting cycles. The most important finding supports the potential for managing and improving pumping operations in the absence of complete knowledge of plume characteristics. An objective functional was selected to minimize mass of water removed and minimize the non-essential mass of contaminant removed. General forms …
Development Of Site Characterization Simulator, Neil W. Kassel
Development Of Site Characterization Simulator, Neil W. Kassel
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to develop a tool for Remedial Project Managers (RPMs) to learn and practice the site characterization process. One of the key difficulties encountered by RPMs during site characterization is the need to develop a model of the site based on limited data. These limited data are used to determine parameters that describe hydrogeologic and contaminant properties (aquifer hydraulic conductivity, contaminant concentration, etc.) and are obtained using sampling techniques that interrogate a very small volume, usually much smaller than node spacing of the computer model used to simulate site conditions. The value of the parameter …

Natural Attenuation Of Chlorinated Ethenes By Anaerobic Reductive Dechlorination Coupled With Aerobic Cometabolism, Derek D. Veerkamp
Natural Attenuation Of Chlorinated Ethenes By Anaerobic Reductive Dechlorination Coupled With Aerobic Cometabolism, Derek D. Veerkamp
Theses and Dissertations
Chlorinated solvents and their daughter products are the most common contaminants of groundwater at industrial and military facilities in the United States. Limitations of conventional technologies have intensified efforts to find alternative methods to remediate contaminated sites to regulatory goals set by CERCLA. Natural attenuation of chlorinated solvents is a promising alternative to traditional pump and treat methods but has not been well understood or widely accepted. This modeling study investigated the ability of TCE to completely degrade under various aquifer conditions and rate order constants. It also examined a case study of a former landfill site at Moody AFB. …
Textual Analysis Of Environmental Compliance Assessment Program Findings, Arthur L. Gepner Jr.
Textual Analysis Of Environmental Compliance Assessment Program Findings, Arthur L. Gepner Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force (USAF) is committed to assessing environmental compliance; this is achieved in the USAF through the Environmental Compliance Assessment Management Program (ECAMP). These ECAMP audits are designed strictly to assess compliance performance at one point-in-time. They are not intended to assess underlying environmental management systems. This study provides insight into the USAF Environmental Management System (EMS) through a textual analysis of ECAMP data. The analysis discovers eleven categories that emerged from the data: performance, communication, documentation, coordination, training, guidance, notification, resource, human resource, material resource, and financial resource. These categories display a hierarchical relationship. This hierarchical …
Visualizing Early-Stage Breast Cancer Tumors In A Mammographic Environment Through A 3-Dimensional Mathematical Model, Christopher B. Bassham
Visualizing Early-Stage Breast Cancer Tumors In A Mammographic Environment Through A 3-Dimensional Mathematical Model, Christopher B. Bassham
Theses and Dissertations
In response to the insidious and deadly nature of breast cancer and the less-than-perfect detection ability of mammography, we develop a mathematical model as a foundation to the long-term goal of improving early breast cancer detection. By using modeling and simulation to construct an accurate breast cancer tumor model, we hope to solve the problems associated with mammogram misdiagnosis and, perhaps as a by-product, lend insight to tumor development dynamics. The final tumor model, written in MATLAB, provides realistic tumor growth and 2-dimensional visualization of 3-dimensional structures. Earlier modeling attempts capture slices of the tumor in the 2-dimensional growth spaces. …
A Bayesian Decision Model For Battle Damage Assessment, Daniel W. Franzen
A Bayesian Decision Model For Battle Damage Assessment, Daniel W. Franzen
Theses and Dissertations
Battle damage assessment (BDA) is critical to success in any air campaign. However, Desert Storm highlighted numerous deficiencies in the BDA process, and operations since Desert Storm continue to point out weaknesses. We present a review of the Phase I BDA decision, or physical damage assessment, and model the decision process using a Bayesian belief network. Through subject matter expert (i.e., the targeteers) elicitation sessions, imagery was found to be critically important to the BDA process yet this information is generally not retained. This use of "perfect information" is delineated in the BDA process models. We proposed a methodology based …

Resolving Problems In Engineering Ethics: Precept And Example, Joel C. Adair
Resolving Problems In Engineering Ethics: Precept And Example, Joel C. Adair
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis has served to accomplish several objectives. First, a foundation was laid for the consideration of ethical factors in an engineering context. This was done by first establishing the need for ethical judgement in the engineering disciplines. A summary of several significant classical ethical theories followed, providing several tools with which to evaluate decisions that have ethical implications. Finally, the conclusion was made that the best framework for making ethical decisions is found in the application of the virtues espoused by the gospel of Jesus Christ.
