College Experience And Change In Locus Of Control, Robert Resnick Aug 1971

College Experience And Change In Locus Of Control, Robert Resnick

Theses and Dissertations

Ninety-one college students were administered The DeKalb Survey Test during their freshman and junior years to assess possible changes in locus of control. On the basis of their freshman scores, subjects were assigned to an internal group, an internal-external group, or an external group..

The greatest change occurred for the external group in the predicted internal direction. The internal-external group changed in the internal direction, but not as much as did externals. Although the internal group became more external, none of the three groups could be classified as externally oriented by their junior year. The higher achieving students and those …

A Correlation Of Academic Achievement As Measured By The Iowa Tests Of Educational Development With Success Of Varsity Players In Football In Iowa High Schools, Thomas C. Pinkham

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to determine the relationship between academic achievement as measured by the composite score on the Iowa Tests of Educational Development and success of varsity players in football. Success in football was defined as winning 70 percent or more of conference games.

A random sample of one hundred Iowa high schools was used in the study. Letters were sent to administrators of the schools to collect achievement scores for all varsity football letter winners and the conference team record. An average composite score was figured for each team, as was the team percentage of wins. A correlation …

A Methodological Comparison Of Interview And Behavioral Techniques For Assessment Of Conservation Of Length, Richard E. Harder Aug 1971

A Methodological Comparison Of Interview And Behavioral Techniques For Assessment Of Conservation Of Length, Richard E. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

Piaget (1929) contends that a verbal interview is the only procedure which is flexible enough to follow and examine the development of cognitive processes in children. However verbal methods are inconsistent with the suggestion by Piaget (1951, 1963) and several colleagues (Furth, 1964, 1966; Sinclair-de-Zwart, 1969) that language merely reflects underlying cognitive processes, and is not a source of logical development. In addition verbal methods allow for verbal misunderstandings by both subjects and experimenters, provide for experimenter bias and may foster response sets.

To minimize these theoretical and methodological difficulties, several investigations (e.g., Braine, 1959, 1962; Sawda & Nelson, 1968) …

An Analysis Of Cattle Grazing On Steep Slopes, William Wayne Patton May 1971

An Analysis Of Cattle Grazing On Steep Slopes, William Wayne Patton

Theses and Dissertations

A field study was made to correlate cattle grazing patterns of steep terrain with the rest-rotation grazing system. Line-plot transects were positioned across each of three heavily grazed, steep canyons. The rest-rotation system as practiced on the Gooding Cattle Allotment is resulting in good forage use as the animals are grazing forage on slopes up to 60%. Level contour trails extending across slope faces made it possible for cattle to graze on steep slopes at distances up to 80 chains from water. Contour trails originate at watering loctions; hence better distribution of water could be expected to result in better …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Studies :|Bi. Several Charge Transfer Systems ; Ii. A Metallic System ; Iii. A Liquid Crystal, Dee Edward Oyler May 1971

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Studies :|Bi. Several Charge Transfer Systems ; Ii. A Metallic System ; Iii. A Liquid Crystal, Dee Edward Oyler

Theses and Dissertations

Solid-liquid phase equilibria studies were used to investigate possible compound formation in solutions of (i) N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and (ii) N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) with a series of halogenated hydrocarbons that were selected to give a wide range of acceptor properties. Solid 1:1 intermolecular compounds were identified from solutions of (i) DMF and (ii) DMA with CCl_4, CBrCl_3, and C_6H_5CCl_3. The intermolecular compounds (DMF)_2•CCl_4 and (DMF)_2•CBrCl_3 were also found. The results suggest charge transfer from DMF or DMA to the chlorine atoms of the acceptor molecule as the process for compound formation. Thermal methods were used to determine with high precision the solid-liquid …

A Calorimetric Study Of Metal Ion Cyclic Polyether Interaction :|Bi. Cation Binding Properties Of Macrocyclic Polyethers In Aqueous Solution As A Function Of Temperature ; Ii. Effect Of Solvent Dielectric Constant On The Binding Properties Of Cyclic Polyethers For Na[Superscript +] And K[Superscript +], Dennis Pershing Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

The complexation properties of the two isomers of the cyclic polyether dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 are examined in aqueous solution for a series of metal ions at various reaction temperatures. The results are discussed in terms of size relationships and salvation characteristics of both polyether and metal ions. ΔCp° values are determined from the temperature dependence of the ΔH° values. A discussion of the errors involved in the determination of ΔH° from the temperature dependence of log K values is also included. Comparisons are made between the results of this study and those of a similar study by H. K. Frensdorff, E. I. …

Eutrophication Of Small Lakes, Lynn T. Kenison May 1971

Eutrophication Of Small Lakes, Lynn T. Kenison

Theses and Dissertations

An estimate was made to determine the amount of nitrate and phosphate entering Utah Lake in 1968. To make this estimate, the flow data for 1968 and the nitrate and phosphate concentrations for 1970 were used. This was done because of the lack of information. The results show that the total nitrate added to Utah Lake in 1968 was 7,638,000 pounds. The total phosphate added was 1,740,200 pounds. Of this amount, 12,4 per cent of the nitrate and 18.0 per cent of the phosphate was released from the lake through the Jordan River. The rest remained in the lake to …

The Roles Of Chlorine Azide In Chemical Lasers, Walter Wood Rice May 1971

The Roles Of Chlorine Azide In Chemical Lasers, Walter Wood Rice

Theses and Dissertations

ClN_3 was photolyzed in various gas mixtures to transform its chemical energy into laser radiation. Reaction mechanisms, energy distribution in reaction products, and relative reaction rates were deduced from the laser emission. Flash photolysis of ClN_3-H_2 mixtures produced HCl laser emission; however, due to a narrow range of operating conditions and many competing reactions, the laser output was less than that obtained from comparable Cl_2-H_2 mixtures. The rate constants for H + ClN_3 —> HCl* (v=n) + N_3 were determined to be 0.45 ± 0.05 of the corresponding rate constants for H + Cl_2 —> HCl* (v=n) + Cl. Chlorine …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Of The Potassium-Rubidium And Rubidium-Cesium Alloy Systems, Elisabeth M. Delawarde May 1971

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Of The Potassium-Rubidium And Rubidium-Cesium Alloy Systems, Elisabeth M. Delawarde

Theses and Dissertations

Thermal methods of high precision were used to determine the solid-liquid phase equilibria diagrams for the potassium-rubidium and the rubidium-cesium systems. Both form minima in the liquidus curves occurring at 307.00° K with 0.667 mole fraction rubidium in the potassium-rubidium system and 282.85° K with 0.530 mole fraction cesium in the rubidium-cesium system. In the potassium-rubidium system, the liquidus and solidus points are very close together, giving a very narrow temperature range for the two phase region. The freezing point minimum in the potassium-rubidium system occurs at 0.667 mole fraction rubidium, suggesting the possible formation of a KRb2 intermetallic compound.

Numerical Control: A Decision Model For Small Manufacturer Guidance, Donald Homrighausen May 1971

Numerical Control: A Decision Model For Small Manufacturer Guidance, Donald Homrighausen

Theses and Dissertations

Much has been written about numerical control (N/C) and its various benefits and limitations, but there is a definite lack of and need for a unifying decision concept, particularly one oriented to small machine shops. Numerically controlled machining operations can be a major investment for a small shop and therefore management needs good guidance for sound decision making when it comes to deciding whether or not to introduce N/C to his operations.

This study examines the various aspects of N/C and categorizes them under three general areas: (1) technical aspects, advantages and disadvantages, (2) economic aspects, and (3) intangible aspects. …

Transient Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient For Injection Into Rigid Vessel, James Edward Steiger May 1971

Transient Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient For Injection Into Rigid Vessel, James Edward Steiger

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop and demonstrate a method for experimentally determining the convective heat transfer in a rigid vessel while air was being injected. The heat transfer took place between the air in the pressurized vessel and the surrounding walls which were maintained at a temperature of 32 F. with a circulating ice water bath. The study considers the effects of injection geometry and injection flow rate on the heat transfer process. The problem of heat transfer after injection has been considered by Means (1), and was responsible for establishing this study. The experimental technique used …

An Attempt To Unify Two Divergent Currents In The Art Of The Twentieth Century, Robert J. Hromyak May 1971

An Attempt To Unify Two Divergent Currents In The Art Of The Twentieth Century, Robert J. Hromyak

Theses and Dissertations

The problem was to unify the apparently conflicting themes of hard edge painting and figurative subject matter.

There are historical precidents for both styles in the twentieth century in the work of Kasimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian on the side of abstract geometric form, and Tom Wesselmann on the side of figurative painting.

Presented as evidence of the possibilities of such an approach are ten acrylic paintings and ten serigraphs.

A Psychophysical Approach To Clinical Judgment On The Mmpi, Richard L. Listiak Jan 1971

A Psychophysical Approach To Clinical Judgment On The Mmpi, Richard L. Listiak

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation attempted to extend the psychophysical analogy to the study of clinical judgment on the MMPI. Previous judgmental research has dealt with multidimensional diagnosis or with simulation of clinicians' judgments on the MMPI. It was believed that the previous research examining the process of clinical judgment had not employed sufficiently sensitive methodologies. Therefore, in this study both direct estimation procedures and classical psychophysical methods were employed in an effort to describe and quantify directly the relationship between clinical judgment and the MMPI. These methods, particularly the former, have been demonstrated to be beneficial to use when exploring the …
