Metastatic Patterns And Functional Disability In Disseminated Breast Carcinoma, Stephen Adam Gudas

Theses and Dissertations

Thirty female outpatients with metastatic breast carcinoma were evaluated using two operational models constructed for the purpose of assessing and assigning a quantitative score for (A) extent of metastatic disease and (B) level of functional disability. These patients were drawn from the population of patients with disseminated breast carcinoma attending the medical oncology clinics at the Medical College of Virginia Tumor Clinics for a 49 day period in 1975. The data from this patient sample were used to test several hypotheses.

Each patient underwent an initial screening procedure designed to clearly identify those patients with disseminated disease. This was followed …

Theses and Dissertations

Northwestern Minnesota is an area at the southwestern edge of the Canadian Shield that is mantled by thick Pleistocene sediment. The Pleistocene material included a variety of glacial, shoreline, offshore, fluvial, and eolian sediment.

The lithology of the glacial sediment reflects the rock and sediment over which the depositing glacier flowed. Glaciers that advanced from the northeast (Canadian Shield) deposited sandy, granitic-rich material. Glaciers that advanced from the north· (Manitoba Lowland) deposited loamy, calcareous-rich material. Glaciers that advanced from the northwest (eastern North Dakota and southwestern Manitobal deposited clayey, shale-ridt material. A variety of fluvial and lacustrine sediments are typically …

The object of this study was to examine the relationship, if any, between success and failure experiences and self-concept in retarded children. The Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale was administered to 30 institutionalized mentally retarded children at the Grafton State School. Following the administration of the pretest, the subjects were divided into three groups, two experimental and one control. Each group was further subdivided into a high and a low self-concept group on the basis of pretest performance. The groups were generally comparable with respect to chronological age and sex. Experimental group A was exposed to a success experience, experimental group …

The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Field Dependence-Independence In College Students, Patricia A. Torness Dec 1974

The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Field Dependence-Independence In College Students, Patricia A. Torness

Theses and Dissertations

One rather consistent finding from studies involving field dependence-independence is that males are more field independent, more articulated in their approach to certain perceptual tasks, than females. It appears that socialization factors and sex-role identification relate to the development of field dependence or field independence. If society plays a part in the development of individual differences in field dependency, a change in society such as the present movement toward greater equality in sex roles could possibly influence sex differences in field dependency. The present study attempts to assess the effect of attitudes favoring traditional roles for women vs. more liberal …

Solids-Liquids Separation In Coal Solution Technology, Ferdosh D. Nankani Dec 1974

Solids-Liquids Separation In Coal Solution Technology, Ferdosh D. Nankani

Theses and Dissertations

An alternate method to the conventional filtration for separation of mineral matter from dissolved lignite was investigated. Separation was accomplished by the introduction of an organic diluent mixed with the solid-liquid product from hydrogenation-solubilization of lignite and decanted at elevated temperatures and pressures. This method gave separation as high as 88 percent recovery of solvent refined lignite (SRL). The SRL contained ash as low as 0.70 percent versus 0.1 to 0.6 percent ash obtained by filtration methods.

The technique investigated is analogous to methods used in the deasphalting of petroleum residuum employed in the petroleum industry. The introduction of the …

The Effects Of Highway Construction On The Fish Populations In The Weber River Near Henefer, Summit County, Utah, Edward James Peters Nov 1974

The Effects Of Highway Construction On The Fish Populations In The Weber River Near Henefer, Summit County, Utah, Edward James Peters

Theses and Dissertations

Alterations of streams to facilitate highway construction and consumptive water use has become a fisheries management problem. To evaluate the effects of channeling concomitant to construction of Interstate 80 N. near Henefer, Utah, altered and unaltered sections of the Weber River were compared on the basis of fishes censused, population estimates and ordinations. Species compositions in particular areas were influenced by local rheologic conditions. Changes in species composition between samplings at a particular area were caused by fish movements. Data from altered sections, rehabilitated with deflectors and checkdams, were not noticeably different than data from unaltered areas. However, fish movements …
