A Finite Element Computer Model Of The Captive Column, Craig P. Kipp Dec 1981

A Finite Element Computer Model Of The Captive Column, Craig P. Kipp

Theses and Dissertations

This report describes the computerized mathematical modeling of a composite structural assemblage referred to as a "captive column". The captive column is a potentially useful structural member (beam, column, or torsion member) which exhibits a high strength-to-weight ratio. The captive column consists of three basic components: a lightweight core section, the principal load bearing elements referred to as caps, and a filamentous wrap, helically wound around the other two members. Together the three elements act as an integral unit and can be constructed in mul- tigeometrical cross sections and diverse lengths.

A linearly elastic finite element computer model was developed …

Steam Drying Of Lignite, Sunil V. Sapatnekar Dec 1981

Steam Drying Of Lignite, Sunil V. Sapatnekar

Theses and Dissertations

North Dakota lignite, (,-lV x 1") in size and having 35 percent initial moisture content, was steam dried by the Fleissner process at elevated temperatures and pressures. The reduction in moisture content of lignite was investigated as a function of the residence time and the drying temperature. The residence time was varied from 10 to 30 minutes and the drying temperature from 220° to 270°C.

It was determined that decrease in moisture content was independent of drying times longer than 20 minutes and drying temperatures below 250°C. The reduction in moisture content increased at higher temperatures. It varied from 45 …

Hemisphericity And Flexibility In Problem Solving Strategies In Creative Test Performance, Mark D. Schuler

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to provide further data regarding the contribution of hemisphericity to the creative process. A flexibility variable was suggested as another contributing factor in the creative process. A set of four questionnaires yielding seven scores reflecting behavioral, personal preference, and personality indices was used to assess hemisphericity. A concept formation task that would theoretically reflect analytic and holistic processing was developed to assess flexibility in problem solving strategies. The hemisphericity and flexibility measures, along with the creativity measure, were administered to 37 females and 13 males. All subjects were right handed with no familial sinistrality.

A Kinetic Model For Ion Exchange Of Sodium From Lignite Using Sulfuric Acid, David Peterson May 1981

A Kinetic Model For Ion Exchange Of Sodium From Lignite Using Sulfuric Acid, David Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

The removal of sodium from lignite by ion exchange techniques was studied using hydrogen ions from sulfuric acid. The exchange of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and aluminum from lignite was also observed. A measured amount of lignite and sulfuric acid solution was contacted in a beaker and stirred for a given period of time. The lignite and solution were then separated and analyzed to determine the extent of ion exchange. The lignite used contained 9.5 percent sodium oxide in the ash.

Five parameters were studied to determine their effect upon the exchange rate. These were initial H2S°4 concentrati°n / lignite particle …

Extraversion, Introversion And Anxiety In Relation To Affiliation In College Students, Thomas Matthew Krapu May 1981

Extraversion, Introversion And Anxiety In Relation To Affiliation In College Students, Thomas Matthew Krapu

Theses and Dissertations

Similarities between personality defects resulting from disruptive, inadequate affective development and problems of extreme extraversion and introversion suggested that developmental ego psychology and object relations theories might be useful in understanding interpersonal functioning in general and how people affiliate in particular. Research on affiliation indicated that extraverts are more affiliative and introverts less affillative, under a condition of high anxiety. A greater predisposition to become anxious (trait anxiety) was also associated with reduced affiliative tendencies under a high anxiety condition. Other research suggested that women and first born subjects were more affiliative than men and later born subjects. The present …

Alterations In Cerebellar Basket, Stellate And Purkinje Cell Dendritic Development Produced By Zinc Deficiency In The Suckling Rat., Christopher Lee Dvergsten

Theses and Dissertations

Rat pups suckled to severely zinc deficient mothers from birth were killed at 21 days of age. The cerebella were then examined by light and electron microscopy. Dendritic development was analyzed on Golgi-stained sections both qualitatively and quantitatively. Impaired pup growth, alopecia, hunched back posture and decreased femur zinc were seen in zinc deficient pups. Zinc deficiency impaired cerebellar development. The cerebellum was smaller and had fewer granule cells. The molecular layer was thinner and there was a persistence of the external granule cell layer. The normal cytoarchitecture of the cerebellar cortex was maintained in zinc deficient pups; however, basket, …

A Modified Crank-Nicolson Method, Ernest David Jordan Jr. Jan 1981

A Modified Crank-Nicolson Method, Ernest David Jordan Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

In order to obtain a numerical solution to the heat equation using finite differences, either implicit or explicit equations are used to formulate a solution. The advantage in an explicit formulation is its simplicity and minimal computer storage requirements while its disadvantage is its instability. The opposite is true for an implicit formulation such as the Crank-Nicolson method; although it is stable it is more difficult to implement and requires a much larger memory capacity. In this paper we examine the accuracy and stability of a hybrid approach, a modified Crank-Nicolson formulation, that combines the advantageous features of both the …

Relationship Between Personality And Value Structure, William B. Pettus Jan 1981

Relationship Between Personality And Value Structure, William B. Pettus

Theses and Dissertations

Humankind has been interested in the study of individual differences throughout recorded history. Plato discussed the issue of individual variations in aptitudes and suggested having tests for selecting those persons most suited for the military, artisans and rulers (Tyler, 1965). Hippocrates proposed a two-fold classification system of body builds which he called ”habitus apoplecticus” and ”habitus phthisicus” (Tyler, 1965). The nineteenth century German astronomer, Bessel, discovered discrepancies among individuals in recording the time of the passage of stars across the meridian at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. This source of error, due to individual differences, became known as the ”personal …
