A Study Of The Method Of Teaching Called "Scripture Chase" As Employed By The Full-Time Teachers Of The Seminaries Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Vernon W. Mattson

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the LDS Seminary Scripture Chase in the following areas: (1) Principles of learning involved; (2) Percentage of full-time teachers using the Scripture Chase; (3) Teacher evaluation of the Scripture Chase in terms of (a) teacher training in the Scripture Chase, (b) student involvement and application, (c) areas of effectiveness and (d) evaluation and rating of the over-all program.
Questionnaires were sent to 498 full-time Seminary teachers in Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Canada with a return of 80.3 percent. The data revealed that 143, or 33 percent regularly use …

Structure Of The Kogi Verb Auxiliary And Its Distribution In Discourse, Chadwick M. Stendal

Certain frequent long words in the Kogi (Aruakan) language of Colombia, South America, were regularly translated by the first linguists who worked in the area as meaning 'and so' or 'afterwards', in spite of the fact that the words were highly variable, and complicated in structure.

When the author and his wife began working on the language, the only additional clue available to them was the information, from one of the previous scholars, that one syllable in the words marked indicative mood.

Before literacy materials can be prepared for preliterate groups, the analyst must discover the native speaker's reactions (1) to the sounds of his language so that a psychophonemic orthography can be developed, and (2) to the structure of his language, so that teaching methods will build on these reactions and help the prospective reader learn more quickly and easily to read and write his language.

Problems include immediate constituents of vowel glides and consonant clusters, syllable stress, syllable division within words, punctuation signals, and tone designation. In the Brôu language the main problem was to ascertain whether Brôu intuitions would …

The purpose of this study was to compare the physical fitness levels of male freshmen honor students and male freshmen students enrolled in physical Education 101 at the University of North Dakota.

This study was directly concerned with physical fitness as measured by the American Association for Health, physical Education, and Recreation Physical Fitness Test. The students involved were all freshmen male students enrolled in the required physical education service program and twenty-seven of the forty-seven male freshmen honor students at the University of North Dakota.

Through their contacts with the Utes and other local tribes the Mormon people became aware of the presence of the Hopis, Navahos and Zunis soon after their arrival in the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Their first actual contact with the Navahos occurred in connection with their Elk Mountain Indian Mission near what is now Moab, Utah, in 1855. During that same year another Indian mission was established in the Cedar City area called the Southern Indian Mission. As president of this mission in 1858, Jacob Hamblin led the first exploring-missionary party to the Hopi villages. Succeeding visits to …

The Holy scriptures abound in references to the use of dance as a means of worship. It would seem that there is a need to understand how present day members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints feel in regard to the kind of dancing referred to in the Scriptures.

This study will be concerned with the production of "Desert Journey," a religious dance-drama depicting an episode from the Book of Mormon. Thirty male high school students were tested in an attempt to determine whether there were any significant differences in dynamic balance among selected American Negroes, American Indians and American Caucasians.

Subjects selected were seventeen years of age or older, with good eyesight and hearing, and with varied backgrounds in sports skills.

The Bass Test of Dynamic Balance was used as the instrument to measure dynamic equilibrium. The t test was used to test the null hypothesis, and the .01 level of significance was established as the criterion. The Indian subjects were tested during the summer of 1961, the Negroes in …
