Application Of Standardized Project Management Practices In Egyptian Non-Profit Organizations: Two Case Studies, Mostafa Adel

Theses and Dissertations

A standardized project management approach across the entire organization is one of the business models adopted by non-profits that contributes to a more efficient and effective project delivery and achieving the organizations’ goals and objectives. Lack of a standardized project management approach might result in project failure and losing the skills and knowledge gained from previous projects, which significantly harms the organizational efforts to have institutional memory that allows implementing these skills and knowledge in future projects. A project management office is the key to mainstream the standardized project management methodology across non-profits. This research aims at investigating the impacts …

Exploring Egyptian Efl Teachers’ Perceptions Of Teacher Leadership, Amira Salama

Theses and Dissertations

The current study is an attempt to understand how the Egyptian English as-a-foreign-language (EFL) teachers perceive the concept of teacher leadership, a topic that has not received considerable attention in the educational leadership literature in this context. Teacher leadership is regarded as an important practice for school reform. In Egypt, language teachers struggle to find their own voices and meet the challenges of the job inside and outside the classroom. Attempts at school and education reform often disregard teachers’ understanding and application of new policies. This may result in the failure of these attempts since teachers are well-versed in school …

Nasser And Park: Development, State Building, And Elite Consolidation, David Wooil Choi Jun 2018

Nasser And Park: Development, State Building, And Elite Consolidation, David Wooil Choi

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the relationship between elites and development and state building. It looks at how elite consolidation does or does not affect development and state building. It does this in the context of the cases of Egypt under Gamal Abdal Nasser and Korea under Park Chunghee. The thesis initially puts forward the argument that Korea's advantages from the colonial era set the basis for later development and state building, and paved the way for elite consolidation into the 1960s. However, the thesis ultimately finds that while Korea may have had some advantages from the colonial era that helped in …

This study examines the use of linguistic resources to take both affective and epistemic stances by English speaking expatriates currently or previously residing in the autonomous community of Galicia. In turn, I consider what those stances index about the identity of the speakers. The historical background outlines how the Galician code came to become stigmatized. As a stigmatized code, one linguistic resource of particular interest to this study is crossing as defined by Rampton (1999, 2009). Crossing and other linguistic resources used such as metalinguistic talk, become to carry indexes through repeated stance-taking moves. Dubois' (2007) stance triangle is the …

Murmur/Murmuro, Paola M. Di Tolla May 2018

Murmur/Murmuro, Paola M. Di Tolla

Theses and Dissertations

By using repetition or misplacing intonations and accents, etc. one can imitate the slipperiness of spoken language. However, it is the accidental slippage that I find most revealing and exciting because it allows for two conversations to exist in one. Once spoken language is transcribed as text, it is put through another filter and the risk of [accidental] slippage increases by a different measure. Fingers don’t keep up or autocorrect insists on taking matters into its own hands.

Assessing Working Memory In Mild Cognitive Impairment With Serial Order Recall, Sheina Emrani May 2018

Assessing Working Memory In Mild Cognitive Impairment With Serial Order Recall, Sheina Emrani

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Working memory (WM) is often assessed with serial order tests such as repeating digits backward. In prior dementia research using the Backward Digit Span subtest (BDT) only aggregate test performance was examined. Methods: Memory clinic patients (n= 66) were classified into three groups - single domain amnestic MCI (aMCI), combined mixed domain/ dysexecutive MCI (mixed/dys MCI), and non-MCI where patients did not meet criteria for MCI. James Baldwin's Soundscape And Grain Of The Racialized Body, Vallerie M. Matos May 2018

James Baldwin's Soundscape And Grain Of The Racialized Body, Vallerie M. Matos

Theses and Dissertations

I will investigate the language around, and in direct relation to, the musicality of James Baldwin’s work. The interdependence of music and literature compose the majority, if not all, of his literary corpus. However, at some point both art forms bifurcate and we are confronted by the difficulties of writing about music and sound, and about music in text. I confront Roland Barthes’s disdain for the adjective and his theory of the “Grain of the Voice” in order to argue that attention to Black expressive musical narrative forms make audible and allow readers to witness to the grain of the …

Al Planning Assistant For Scheduling Daily Activities, Priyanka Ahuja May 2018

Al Planning Assistant For Scheduling Daily Activities, Priyanka Ahuja

Theses and Dissertations

Artificial conversational agents are software agents that can interact with humans in the way humans do. Siri Cortana, and Alexa are examples of intelligent agents that can help us with almost all the basic tasks. These agents are smart enough to do the basic tasks, but not as much when it comes to complex tasks, such as analyzing traffic data, reviewing scheduling conflicts, rescheduling meetings while resolving conflicts, and offering suggestions based upon data analyses (e.g. traffic patterns, weather, etc.) The actual potential of dialogue-based task agent potential remains untapped. The reason is the fact agents lack the ability to …

Applying The Developmental Path Of English Negation To The Automated Scoring Of Learner Essays, Allen Travis Moore May 2018

Applying The Developmental Path Of English Negation To The Automated Scoring Of Learner Essays, Allen Travis Moore

Theses and Dissertations

The resources required to have humans score extended written response items in English language learner (ELL) contexts has caused automated essay scoring (AES) to emerge as a desired alternative. However, these systems often rely heavily on indirect proxies of writing quality such as word, sentence, and essay lengths because of their strong correlation to scores (Vajjala, 2017). This has led to concern about the validity of the features used to establish the predictive accuracy of AES systems (Attali, 2007; Weigle, 2013). Reliance on construct-irrelevant features in ELL contexts also forfeits the opportunity to provide meaningful diagnostic feedback to test-takers or …

Digital Automatic Speech Recognition Using Kaldi, Sarah Habeeb Alyousefi

Theses and Dissertations

The Automatic speech recognition (ASR) system is one of most important technologies that used for human-machine interaction. The main goal of the ASR system is to recognize different natural languages that are spoken by humans. The difficulties of these recognition systems depend on many factors, such as noises, variability of the speakers, and problems of continuous speech. For that reason, many researchers and foundations have designed different kinds of licensed toolkits and software that are specialized in building speech recognition systems, including , Julius, Sphinx-4, RWTH ASR, and HTK toolkits. In this thesis, Kaldi toolkit, which is one of the …

This project is a collection of poems based on my experiences working in the retail industry along the Texas/Mexico border for over 15 years. While many people take for granted their shopping trips, for those on the inside it is a very different reality. The poems included in this project are grouped into sections that focus on aspects of retail or are inspired by it, from the seemingly insignificant, like encounters with strangers, to more profound subjects like racism, identity, immigration, consumerism, and other social issues. The sections also follow Gloria E. Anzaldúas path of conocimento, a journey from estrangement …

In- And Out- Of-School Literacy Practices Of Student Refugees: A Cross-Case Analysis In A South Texas Middle School, Maria L. Mendez

Theses and Dissertations

As the leading U.S. state currently welcoming all kinds of refugees, Texas has a public school system that offers a formal education to refugee students (Bureau of Population Refugees and Migration, 2015). In order to fill this research gap, this study examines student refugee school-based literacy interactions in the U.S. public school system and how these practices connect or do not connect with the literacy practices these students experience in …
