The Sexually Dimorphic Role Of Connexin 43 In Bone Remodeling And Disuse-Induced Bone Loss, Gabriel A. Hoppock

Theses and Dissertations

Bone loss is frequently experienced by individuals undergoing long-term disuse, such as prolonged bedrest, immobilization due to paralysis or injury, and conditions such as spaceflight. Under normal physiological conditions, bone remodeling is balanced by bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts, and the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts is orchestrated by osteocytes. Osteocytes are the most abundant cell type found in bone and ample evidence suggests they are bone’s main mechanosensory cell type. Therefore, understanding osteocyte biology and responses to mechanical signals, or lack thereof during unloading, may lead to new therapeutic targets to combat bone loss during disuse. Previous data has …

Online racism (i.e., racism perpetrated and embedded within media and platforms on the Internet) is increasingly becoming a public health concern. Recent empirical evidence demonstrates that over a three year period, Black adolescents reported experiencing at least one online racial discriminatory incident, including exposure to racist images or videos within digital spaces (Tynes et al., 2020). One way in which Black adolescents are exposed to online racism is through the consumption of digital news media on the coverage of racially traumatic events (e.g., murders of Black men and women by police officers, racial hate crimes committed against Black people) and …

Exploring The Relationship Of Intact Limb Knee Joint Loading With Step Lengths And Step Length Symmetry In Individuals With Lower Limb Amputation, Edward D. Syrett Jan 2024

Exploring The Relationship Of Intact Limb Knee Joint Loading With Step Lengths And Step Length Symmetry In Individuals With Lower Limb Amputation, Edward D. Syrett

Theses and Dissertations

Individuals with unilateral lower limb amputation (LLA) frequently experience intact limb knee pain, dysfunction, and osteoarthritis. These problems can worsen pre-existing reductions in mobility and quality of life that this population regularly experiences. It is widely accepted that knee joint loading is implicated in the development of knee joint issues, and intact limb knee joint load alterations are thought to be widespread in individuals with LLA. Prior work suggests that gait deviations frequently present in this population may be a contributory cause of these altered forces. These deviations can take many forms, but individuals with LLA commonly demonstrate alterations in …

Spatial Transcriptomics Unravels Palmitoylation And Zonation- Dependent Gene Regulation Of Aeg-1 In Mouse Liver, Alissa Saverino

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity-induced metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) leads to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Astrocyte-elevated gene-1/Metadherin (AEG-1/MTDH) plays a key role in promoting MASH and HCC. AEG-1 is palmitoylated at residue cysteine 75 (Cys75) and a knock-in mouse representing mutated Cys75 to serine (AEG-1-C75S) showed activation of MASH- and HCC-promoting gene signature when compared to wild-type littermates (AEG-1-WT). The liver consists of 3 zones, periportal, midlobular, and pericentral, and zone-specific dysregulated gene expression impairs metabolic homeostasis in the liver, contributing to MASH and HCC. Here, to elucidate how palmitoylation influences AEG-1-mediated gene regulation in regards to hepatic zonation, we performed spatial transcriptomics (ST) in …

Development Of A Validity Scale For The Icd-11 Personality Disorder Measure (Psi-11), Rae Lutz

Theses and Dissertations

Invalid responding is a significant issue in the utilization of self-report information. Invalid responding can be assessed by stand-alone validity measures or embedded validity scales. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is one of two major diagnostic systems which provide guidance on diagnosing personality disorder, with the most recent version (ICD-11) providing a fully dimensional model for personality disorders. No existing measures aimed at assessing dimensional personality pathology have addressed the combination of PD severity and trait qualifiers that were based upon ICD-11 guidelines. To address this gap, Clark et al. (2021) developed the ICD-11 Personality Disorder Measure (PSI-11). However, …

Levofloxacin Incorporated Extracellular Matrix Nanoparticles For Pulmonary Cystic Fibrosis Infections, Raahi Patel

Theses and Dissertations

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a progressive genetic disorder that affects around 40,000 people in the United States. CF is characterized by a mutation in the CFTR protein that causes dysregulated ion transport across epithelial cells, producing viscous mucus in the lung that increases bacterial invasion, causing persistent infections and subsequent inflammation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are two of the most common infections in CF patients that are resistant to antibiotics. One antibiotic approved to treat these infections is levofloxacin (LVX) that functions to inhibit bacterial replication, but can be further developed into tailorable particles. Nanoparticles are an emerging inhaled …

Sense Make Before Book, Bradley Sinanan Jan 2024

Sense Make Before Book, Bradley Sinanan

Theses and Dissertations

“Sense Make Before Book” is an Indo-Caribbean turn of phrase which refers to common sense being more important than book smarts. My sister sent me a post the other day on Instagram of an Trinidadian woman using this phrase, saying it was one of Indo-Caribbean origin. I was interested and asked my mom about it. My mom says that when she was younger my grandpa said it often around their house in Princes Town, Trinidad and Tobago. This adage feels charged thinking about the history of indenture and its effects on the Indo-Caribbean diaspora.

The written word of archival history …

Obesity Knowledge And Bmi In Caregiver-Adolescent Dyads: A Descriptive Comparative Pilot Study, John Sykes, John Sykes

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of obesity and associated health risks and costs continue to increase. The majority of these health and cost ramifications manifest in adulthood, making it imperative to intercept the problem during childhood. Unfortunately, an overwhelming majority of the research surrounding adolescents and obesity to date involves subjects that are already overweight or obese, and the focus of those interventions are on secondary and tertiary prevention. Focusing on primary prevention of childhood obesity could ultimately decrease the incidence, prevalence, and disease-related burden to society. It is posited that the 20% difference in obesity prevalence between adults and children …

Theses and Dissertations

Gene expression provides insight into the functional variations on the cellular level that shape biological phenomena. Several recent sequencing technologies have produced an abundance of expression profiles spurring entirely new disciplines of biological study. With this myriad of data, the new task is deciding how to assess and extract meaningful insights. Identifying genes with expression changes in disease conditions is often the first step in finding potential biomarkers for diagnosis, and targets for pharmaceutical treatments. Parametric statistical tests at the individual gene level have been the conventional approach for finding differentially expressed genes. These tests exhibit high statistical power but …

Dune Dynamics- A Nature-Based Preschool, Aseel Alhaidari Jan 2024

Dune Dynamics- A Nature-Based Preschool, Aseel Alhaidari

Theses and Dissertations

Sustainability is a global issue that requires collaborative efforts. Environmental values and attitudes are shaped in adults by early exposure to nature. During the COVID-19 pandemic, remote learning increased the attention to nature-based learning from families and the press (Prochner, 2021).

Although many early childhood education approaches for the age group of 3-5 years recognize the importance of holistic development and focus on tailoring the learning experience to the developmental stage of young children, few emphasize the importance of integrating nature as one of the learning tools. Nature-deficit disorder in children means that children spend less time outdoors and in …

Mathematical Modeling And Analysis Of Inflammation And Tissue Repair: Lung Inflammation And Wound Healing In Corals Under Stress, Quintessa Hay

Theses and Dissertations

A variety of insults, including tissue injury and/or exposure to pathogen, elicit an immune response in many organisms. An improperly regulated immune response can result in deleterious effects to the organism. Here we present models for lung injury in young and old mice and models for wound healing in coral reefs.

It is well known that the immune response becomes less effective in older individuals. This is of particular interest in pulmonary insults such as ventilator induced lung injury (VILI) or lung infection. We extended a mathematical model for the inflammatory response to VILI and used experimental data to select …
