The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act mandates that all school districts provide a free appropriate public education to students with Individualized Education Plans in their least restrictive environment. Co-teaching in inclusion classrooms is a collaborative effort, with a general education teacher and a special education teacher, to provide academic and behavioral support to students with disabilities with their non-disabled peers. Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a commensal gram-positive colonizer of the human nasopharynx capable of causing diseases including otitis media, pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. Although it is often a harmless colonizer, there is a high rate of mortality and morbidity among the immunocompromised, elderly, and young children. While these infections can often be treated with antibiotics, resistance to numerous antibiotics is increasing. Antibiotic resistance is a well-studied dilemma; however, little information is known of how bacteria take up certain antibiotics. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to determine if differences exist in academic achievement based on student SES as measured by grade point average (GPA), credit hours earned, and completion of the academic year for rural community college students enrolled during the 2018-19 academic year. This case study aimed to understand adolescent Black girls’ response when becoming angry as related to verbal and physical aggression. Aquatic nuisance plants (ANS), like watershield (Brasenia schreberi), negatively affect water chemistry, ecosystem ecology, and human uses of waterbodies if not properly managed. Understanding ecological predictors as well as efficient control strategies is needed for successful control of ANS. This research assessed 1) potential environmental and ecological predictors of watershield prevalence along with 2) submersed injections of flumioxazin herbicide for watershield control. Twenty-one lakes in the state of Mississippi were surveyed for watershield presence. Traditional plating methods for bacterial enumeration can be limited, but the development of high-throughput DNA sequencing, such as Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT), can provide rapid and highly specific alternative for species-level identification. In this study, ONT amplicon sequencing was applied to fresh broiler breast meat to identify their bacterial composition and monitor their dynamic changes. The sequencing data were complemented by sensory panels, physicochemical analysis, and traditional plating methods. Over time, the bacterial diversity decreased within and across samples. By the end of shelf-life, Pseudomonas fragi, Pseudomonas lundesis, and Brochothrix thermosphacta became the most prevalent species. These bacteria were associated …

Cardiac time intervals (CTIs) are vital indicators of cardiac health and can be estimated using a combination of electrocardiography (ECG) and seismocardiography (SCG). This study investigates the impact of SCG sensor location across the sternum on CTI estimations and heart rate variability parameters. Signal processing algorithms were developed to detect the opening and closure of heart valves on SCG for CTI calculation. A novel ECG-independent method was also developed based on template matching to determine similar parameters solely based on SCG. Local anesthesia is critical for performing corneal procedures in horses. Studying non- ophthalmic local anesthetics for corneal use is necessary because the efficacy and availability of ophthalmic preparations may be limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effects and potential adverse consequences of ropivacaine hydrochloride 0.5% and lidocaine hydrochloride 2% when applied topically to the corneas of eight healthy equids compared to an eyewash control. Florists must analyze business practices to become environmentally savvy. This study investigated whether the introduction of sustainable waste practices into a college floral design course influenced the student’s perception of environmental health. Two groups of students enrolled in the basic floral design course at Mississippi State University completed a survey on environmental health at the start and end of the semester. One group sorted their lab wastes into compostable and landfill material. This study was conducted to see if the engagement variables from the TummySafe 2022 online course as well as the participants’ demographic variables were positively correlated with the TummySafe certification exam score. The study examined factors that explained participants’ exam performance. The results indicated that there was little to no correlation between demographics or engagement variables and the certification exam score. Findings indicated that 22.8% of the overall variance in certification exam performance was explained by number of prior certifications (10%), race (6.5%), gender (3.5%), ethnicity (.2%), days between last course activity and exam (1.7%), in-course assessment (1%), total activity …

Research assessing the diagnostic criteria for hoarding disorder has firmly differentiated hoarding disorder from normative collecting. However, there has been no examination of non-normative collecting – that is, collectors that experience elevated hoarding symptoms. The current study utilized an online survey to explore differences between self-identified collectors (n = 140) and non-collectors (n = 169) in externalized hoarding symptoms, saving cognitions, and psychosocial functioning. Collectors reported higher general self-efficacy and higher need for control of items than non-collectors. Hoarding symptoms were not significantly different between collectors and non-collectors. This thesis examines the historical and contemporary roots of food apartheid in the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta, while employing a Black Food Geographies approach to highlight and interpret the lived experiences of people in the Delta. This work draws on interviews and participant observation in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to decenter popular narratives around food insecurity and region and instead center the ideas and opinions of people directly impacted. Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) causes a wide range of diseases in chickens called colibacillosis, resulting a substantial economic loss to the poultry industry. This dissertation aims at addressing this disease by exploring key virulence-associated genes (VAGs), swarming motility (SM), and multi-locus sequence types (MLST) of E. coli isolates obtained from colibacillosis-infected or asymptomatic commercial hens. Campylobacter jejuni is microaerophilic pathogen and is one of the leading causes of acute diarrhea in the United States. Despite being a microaerophilic pathogen, C. jejuni continues to endure within the domain of food production, especially in poultry processing. In this study, we evaluated the aerotolerance, biofilm forming abilities, and genetic diversity of C. jejuni isolates previously obtained from commercial broiler processing plants. Out of 40 isolates, 25 (62.5%) were aero–sensitive (AS), 10 (25%) were intermediately aerotolerant (IAT), and 5 (12.5%) were hyper aerotolerant (HAT). Food insecurity, poor diet quality, and periodontal disease are critical problems in the United States, yet limited studies examine how these three conditions are related. Men and the Hispanic population suffer a disproportionate burden of periodontal disease and are understudied groups. Using NHANES data from 2015 to 2018 and the HEI-2015, this study describes the prevalence of men’s periodontitis and its association with food insecurity and diet quality. The final sample was 4,582 men, aged 30 years or older, of whom 1,130 were Hispanic. Odds ratios were calculated via multivariable logistic regression models. This study assesses the effectiveness of conservation tillage and cover cropping systems in reducing irrigation water use while improving or maintaining cotton yield and profitability. A precision biotic (PB) in standard and reduced CP diets, and a protease (PRO) used alone and in combination with PB in the reduced CP diet were evaluated. Adsorption is a favorable substitute for traditional methods including coagulation, precipitation, membrane separation, and ion-exchange in water purification. Invasive Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) have spread throughout the Mississippi River basin and threaten native species. The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley has numerous water-control structures. These structures could potentially be operated to limit expansions of invasive fishes. My goal was to examine the effects of two water-control structures on movements of Silver Carp within a floodplain network of waterbodies, including an oxbow lake (Eagle Lake; LA, MS). The use of brightness mode (B-mode) ultrasound (US), color Doppler (CD), and power Doppler (PD) can all help evaluate and characterize splenic lesions. A relatively new non-Doppler technology used to evaluate vasculature called B-Flow helps overcome certain limitations of CD and PD that affect visualization of blood flow. There are no studies describing the use of B-Flow characterizing splenic lesions in dogs. A total of 97 splenic lesions were evaluated. Splenic lesions that were larger than 2 cm, distorted the splenic capsule, or accompanied free fluid were significantly associated with malignancy. Previous research has shown that appearance-related pressures from multiple sources can influence body esteem in emerging adults. Furthermore, research has shown that self-compassion and gender play a role in body image and the relation between sociocultural pressures and body esteem. Less research has examined how these variables interact in their association with body esteem in emerging adults. Thus, the current study sought to assess these interactions.
