The Chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera) has been observed to frequently roll in fine dust when it is available. It was hypothesized that such material would have strong reinforcing properties to a chinchilla which had been deprived of bathing in dust.
A straight alley runway was used with start latency and running speed to dust in the goal box as the dependent variables. Fifty-four chinchillas were randomly assigned to equal cells of a 3 by 3 matrix in which hours of deprivation and duration of reward varied. Each subject was given ten individual trials .

The purpose of this study was to survey the use of selected public secondary schools by the recreation commissions in rural Manitoba, to determine the amount of, or lack of, cooperative practices between the school district and the recreation commission in these communities, in regard to the commission's use of the school for community recreation.
A single group non-probability sample of all school superintendents from the rural communities in southern Manitoba, that had a recreation commission and a population of between 800 and 4000 people was employed in this study. The questionnaire method was used with a questionnaire constructed by …

Problem: This study investigated selected aspects of teacher personality, teacher self concept, teacher creativity, and teacher perception of the ideal pupil. Attention was given to determining the nature and degree of the relationship between personality, self concept, creativity and perception of the ideal pupil among elementary school teachers.
Procedure: The research was conducted in the Great Falls, Montana Public Schools during the school years 1971-72 and 1972-73. The sample included elementary teachers completing two or more of the instruments used in the study, participating in a Title III, PACE project in-service program.

Problem
The purpose of this study was to measure personality characteristics and empathic ability of masters level counseling students and then to determine the relationship of these dimensions to independent ratings of their counseling effectiveness. Relationships between personality characteristics and empathic ability were also examined as were differences in personality and empathy between more effective and less effective counselor groups.
Method
The subjects were 34 masters level counseling students enrolled in their first counseling practicum. They completed Form A and Form B of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF), the measure of personality, and the Affective Sensitivity Scale, the measure …

Oocysts of Isospora canis, an important protozoan parasite of dogs, must sporulate in the external environment in order to become infective. To determine the tolerance of these oocysts to different temperatures, oocysts ware collected from freshly passed feces, cleaned, and subsequently stored in unsporulated, partially sporulated, and completely sporulated conditions at temperatures ranging from +50 C to -50 C. Observations on survival for each group were determined periodically thereafter at intervals up to 64 days. The rate of sporulation was followed at 6 hr intervals for temperatures of 20, 25, 30, and 38 C. Completely sporulated oocysts ware more resistant …

A taxonomic study of the algae of Huntington canyon, Emery County, Utah, was conducted from March 1971 to April 1972. The algal flora of this cold, fast-flowing, hard-water mountain creek consisted of ninety-five genera, one hundred ninety-six species, twenty-nine varieties, and two forms. This diverse flora was dominated by many different species with usually rather few individuals of Achnanthes, Cymbella, Diatoma, Gomphonema, Lyngbya, Navicula, Nitzschia, Oscillatoria, Synedra, and Ulothrix.

A remote aerosol sampler, capable of up to 3 weeks continuous sampling has been developed. It consists of an Anderson 2000 Inc. mini-sampler or personnel monitor requiring an air flow of 1.4 e/min, a flow meter, a vacuum meter, a bleed valve, a dry gas volume meter, and a pump. The pump is a Brailsford Model TD-4X2, and operates on a 24 volt D.C. power supply. The sampler consists of four impaction stages with a 0.4 μ Nuclepore backup filter. It has always been desired that the meal consumed prior to competition would enhance the athlete's performance. The problem is that no one knows how different pre-competition meals affect the performance of the athlete.
Sixty-eight Oklahoma State University football players ran a two-mile run after consuming one of four treatments-- steak and eggs, pancakes, oatmeal and eggs, and a control meal. Subjects were grouped by football position and blocked in fours based on a pre-test time. Subjects were assigned treatments randomly with each subject in each block having a different treatment. There was some concern among certain staff members of the Men's Physical Education Division at the University of North Dakota about the "disappearance" of physical education majors. The enrollment for certain junior and senior major cl*sses for the fall semester, 1973, was lower than expected and the prospects for the second semester were similar.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relationship existed between sprinting speed performance and strength performance per unit of body weight.
A Non-Probability sample, consisting of twenty-nine football players from Fargo North High School was used. All subjects were tested in strength and speed performance and a correlation was made between the scores on each test.
The speed performance test consisted of each subject sprinting the 40-yard dash in a series of four trials. The mode score was used to reduce timer error. All subjects ran the trials alone and started when they were ready. This was …

This thesis will describe and interpret the development of this Relief Society wheat storage program from its inception in 1876 to 1940 when the program was transferred to the General Church Welfare Committee. Emphasis will be placed on the sisters' attempts to store grain and the problems they encountered. The thesis will also discuss the effects of outside forces on the program and the different ways the sisters used the grain. The final chapter will deal with the relationship between the movement and the history of the Relief Society and its parent organization, the Mormon Church.

Senior high school students in a Human Biology course were given college level work through the Phase Achievement System (PAS), a biology course at Brigham Young University (BYU). Statistical analysis showed significant growth in high school student learning through the PAS. When ability to work with PAS was measured, significant differences between the high school and college groups were not evident. A high percentage of college and high school students dropped out of the PAS, probably becasue students could fail at the PAS without experiencing academic failure.

While a considerable amount of evaluative research has been performed in the area of day care, the overwhelming majority of these studies have dealt only with experimental programs aimed at lower class children. The present study was conceived as an evaluation of established day care and preschool programs available to the general community. The study was performed in an Upper Midwest community with a total population of 35*000.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the transient response of cross exercise during maximum static performance by electromyography. Thirty male athletes performed maximum static exercise at 115 degrees extension of the knee. Action potentials generated in this dominant exercising and nondominant, nonexercising vastus lateralis muscles were compared to determine whether or not the nonexercising muscle was affected during exercise.
Surface electrodes were attached to both vastus lateralis muscles. The muscular impulses were recorded on a Grass Five Polygraph. The amplitude of the EMG tracings were then measured to determine the relative quantity of stimulus that each muscle received …

This study was designed to determine the prevalence of speech and hearing disorders at the North Dakota State Penitentiary. Recommendations for suitable follow-up services for speech and hearing disorders were made to the administrative staff of the penitentiary.
Subjects for this study consisted of eighty-seven male inmates at the North Dakota State Penitentiary. The speech of each subject was evaluated to identify speech disorders of articulation, voice, and/or fluency. Articulation disorders were identified from scores obtained by the subjects on the Arizona Articulation Proficiency Scale ReVised. Macrocyclic polyether sulfides have been prepared by reacting an oligoethylene glycol dichloride with a dithiol or sodium sulfide in ethanol. The following new compounds were prepared: 1-thia-(9-crown-3), 1,4-dithia-(9-crown-3), 1,4-dithia-(12-crown-4), 1,4,7-trithia-(12-crown-4), 1-thia-(18-crown-6), I,4-dithia-(18-crown-6), 1,7-dithia-(18-crown-6), 1,4,7-trithia-(18-crown-6), 1,7-dithia-(21-crown-7), 1,4,7-trithia-(21-crown-7). Four other previously reported macrocyclic polyether sulfides were also prepared. The symmetry of the nmr spectra of these compounds give added evidence for the proposed ring structures. A method for the trace element analysis of hair by charged particle X-ray fluorescence is presented. The validity of the method is shown by the analysis of NBS SRM 1577--Bovine Liver, obtained from the National Bureau of Standards. Excellent correlation is obtained between results from the analysis by the X-ray method and those certified by NBS. Hair samples are ashed by a low temperature oxidation process and analyzed by the X-ray method. The results from the analysis by the X-ray method are compared to those obtained from the analysis of the same hair samples by atomic absorption. Good correlation is …

The purpose of this study was to perfect a new calorimetric method for identifying and counting ionizable chemical groups on proteins. To do this, calorimetric and electrometric titrations were performed (using HCl and NaOH as titrant) on native carboxypeptidase, carbonic anhydrase and concanavalin A plus their apo and organic ligand bound derivatives. Readily identifiable endpoints were seen in the calorimetric titrations and general agreement was found between ΔH values obtained in this study and literature ΔH values of model compounds undergoing the same reaction. Five publications and one manuscript concerning the taxonomic studies of trombiculid mites are submitted. Publications include a revision of the North American genus Comatacarus Ewing, the erection of the following genera by Brennan and Reed: Loomisia, Atelepalme, Phalcophila, and Nycterinastes. Discussions of the genera Aitkenius Brennan and Polylopadium Brennan and Jones are also included. The subfamily Leeuwenhoekinae is reviewed on the basis of neo-tropical representatives (unpublished manuscript). The genus Odontacarus comprises 66% of the chiggers examined, and 82% of these were identified as O. tubercularis (Brennan). Odontacarus fieldi Brennan and Jones and O. cayolargoensis Brennan are synonomized under O. tubercularis …

This project was designed to generate information relative to a specific intercultural communication situation, especially directed toward diversity between cultural expectation and performance in the following areas: first, Chinese expectation of American Latter-day Saint missionaries' performance in Chinese contexts; and second, performance of the missionaries, as reflected by their knowledge of proper conduct in Chinese contexts at the end of their missions.
Using Q-card sorting procedures and t-test analysis, an analytically developed instrument consisting of seventy statements grouped in six behavior categories was applied in the specific areas. Twenty-nine of the seventy statements showed significant diversity. Four of the hypothesized …
