Cognitive Changes During The Grief Process, Barbara J. Benner Aug 1979

Cognitive Changes During The Grief Process, Barbara J. Benner

Theses and Dissertations

Although many authors have used the term "grief work" since Lindemann (1944) first coined it, there has been no systematic investigation of the nature of this phenomenon. This study sought to delineate the cognitive and interpersonal events that occur during grief events and grief resolution. It was hypothesized that grief work involves the creation of a new relationship with the deceased, and that this would be manifested in a variety of styles of grief.

Men and women who had been widowed within the previous two years were identified through newspaper obituaries and recruited as subjects. Sixty subjects completed two process …

A Survey Of Vocal Characteristics In A Sample Of Adult Rheumatoid Arthritics, Janine B. Chenier

Theses and Dissertations

The normalcy of voicing at the level of the larynx is dependent upon the competency of the cricoarytenoid joints to which the vocal folds are attached. Rheumatoid involvement of this diarthrodial joint could result in reduced mobility or fixation of the fold(s).

Medical authors hold differing opinions of the nature and frequency of voice change due to the pathology known as cricoarytenoiditis. The term "hoarse" has been widely used to describe the characteristic alteration of phonation in a population of rheumatoid arthritics.

It was the purpose of this study to survey a sample of adult rheumatoid arthritics in order to …

Representative Mormon Short Stories 1890 To 1940: Evolution Of Sentimentalism Toward Realism, Alice Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Previously, no one has analyzed the short stories of Mormon periodicals from their inception in the late nineteenth century until 1940. The body of this study attempts to do so and has two main aims.

First, it evaluates the literary development of largely sentimental stories written for Mormon youth. Sentimentality in fiction was an extreme form of romanticism which flourished in America throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. As other forms of realistic writing became more acceptable in the nation, Mormon writers gradually accommodated their literary styles to conform with national trends. The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On Responses To Opiates And Other Centrally-Acting Pharmacologic Agents, Glenn Stuart Simon

Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes mellitus affects millions of people. Although diabetics can lead relatively normal lives, all treatments for the disease are symptomatic and not curative. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the sensitivity to opiates and other selected centrally-acting drugs in animals is altered by streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. A second objective was to determine which aspect of the diabetic syndrome primarily was responsible for the altered sensitivity. Other experiments were performed in an attempt to elucidate the mechanism whereby this altered sensitivity occurred.

STZ-induced diabetes or dextrose-induced transient hyperglycemia did not have a significant effect on the duration of …
