Dietary Restraint And The Salience Of Visual Food Cues, Jeanine Elaine Kotschwar Aug 1986

Dietary Restraint And The Salience Of Visual Food Cues, Jeanine Elaine Kotschwar

Theses and Dissertations

A review of the literature reveals significant changes which have oc- cured in the role posited for dieting. Once considered a simple solution for weight loss, dieting has more recently been seen as playing a causal role in the development of eating disorders. Similarly, the characteristics and behaviors once thought to be attributable to obesity have more recently been said to be by-products of dieting-induced hunger. Several authors have pointed to the influence of cognitive factors in initiating and maintaining dieting and, conversely, in abandoning restraint in eating.

The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of dietary …

The question of generalizability of these research findings to females and to other ethnic groups, such as Native Americans, is one of paramount importance. The present study was designed to investigate differences between the sexes and between the White and Native American groups, by analysis of the MMPI profiles of each group.

In addition to investigation of the group differences, this study addressed another major deficiency of the literature. Many psychological assessments, for example the …

This study investigated patterns of cortical activity and erectile responding which paralleled inhibition and •facilitation of sexual arousal in a nonclinical sample. To determine if the cerebral hemispheres contributed differential1y during regulation of arousal, the study: (a) tested for lateral asymmetries in EEG (electroencephalogram) alpha power during each condition, and (b) examined subjects' strategies for unique cognitive contributions of the hemispheres.

Thirty, right-handed, college-aged males, listened to a set sequence of tapes (neutral, erotic, neutral, erotic), counterbalanced for content and arousal regulation. Subjects simply listened to neutral tapes. To erotic tapes subjects inhibited, and alternatively facilitated arousal .

Human Resource Accounting: Putting A Price On People, Michael P. Maciver Jun 1986

Human Resource Accounting: Putting A Price On People, Michael P. Maciver

Theses and Dissertations

Since its' introduction in the early 1960s, the idea of Human Resources Accounting has, for the most part, been resisted, rejected, and left the perish in the pages of business periodicals. Exactly why such a well-intentioned program has been met with such disdain is uncertain.

This study proceeds with a discussion of the topic of Human Resources Accounting, outlining two main tasks which proponents of the idea have had to accomplish thus far: winning acceptance of the idea of the human resources as a capitalizable asset and deciding upon what basis the value of the human asset will be quantified. …

Theses and Dissertations

Travis Hirshi's Social Control Theory proposes that delinquents fail to form or maintain a bond to society consisting of attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. The Invention Of Oz, Janet Faye Daley Lysengen May 1986

The Invention Of Oz, Janet Faye Daley Lysengen

Theses and Dissertations

Since L. Frank Baum published his first Oz book in 1900, Oz has become an integral part of American society; yet, only recently have his books begun to receive critical attention. Critics seem most interested in dealing with them in terms of sociology, popular culture, and psychology, but a few have recognized Baum's contributions to the birth of science fiction, to the depiction of a female hero in Dorothy, and to Baum's imaginative and perceptive examination of what separates humans from machines. This thesis will analyze the literary dimension of the Oz series. The goal will be to perceive the …

The Effects Of Keyguard Use And Pelvic Position On Speed And Accuracy Of Typing For A Physically Handicapped Child: A Case Study, Diane J. Berg May 1986

The Effects Of Keyguard Use And Pelvic Position On Speed And Accuracy Of Typing For A Physically Handicapped Child: A Case Study, Diane J. Berg

Theses and Dissertations

A single case study was designed to explore the effects that two pelvic positions and the use of a keyguard have on a physically handicapped child's speed and accuracy in typing. The subject, an 8-year-old male with cerebral palsy, was positioned in four combinations of keyguard versus non-keyguard use and neutral versus posterior pelvic positions during eight typing sessions over a time period of one month. A two way analysis of variance by regression using a linear model was performed on speed and accuracy. The results indicated that the use of the keyguard increased accuracy (p < .01) and decreased speed (p < .01). Pelvic positioning did not appear to have a major effect on either speed or accuracy. Informal observations indicated that typing alone did not have a significant effect on spelling skills. Recommendations for further studies are addressed.

Serotonergic Mediation In The Activity Of Anticonvulsant Compounds (Neurotransmitter, Diazepam, Phenytoin)., Larry Marvin Leadbetter Jan 1986

Serotonergic Mediation In The Activity Of Anticonvulsant Compounds (Neurotransmitter, Diazepam, Phenytoin)., Larry Marvin Leadbetter

Theses and Dissertations

The role of the central nervous system neurotransmitter serotonin was evaluated on the anticonvulsant activity of various compounds. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) is known to have an inhibitory role in central nervous system activity. A facilitation of the anticonvulsant activity of benzodiazepines has previously been attributed to increased serotonin activity.Male white mice of the ICR strain were administered varying doses of phenytoin, 5-ethyl, 5-methylhydantoin (EMH) and JAW-669, then challenged with maximal electroshock. The occurrence of seizures was used to evaluate the degree of protection provided by a given dose of anticonvulsant. The role of serotonin on the anticonvulsant activity of these compounds was …

This study of the sentences from the prison admission records has focused on the comparative severity of the judges, examines age as an influencing factor in sentencing, and compares the sentences of the polygamists with those for crimes against person and property.
