Measurement Of Ascorbic Acid And Dehydroascorbic Acid In Mammalian Tissues Using Hplc With Electrochemical Detection, Debra A. Fry

Theses and Dissertations

The oxidized and reduced forms of ascorbic acid (AA) are reactive and unstable compounds making their measurement difficult. Detection of small amounts of AA and dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA) is essential for determining the biochemical function of the vitamin in cells and subcellular organelles. While a variety of techniques exist which detect millimolar levels of AA, accurate assessment of pmol levels of AA and DHAA in a variety of tissues has not been perfected. In the present study, a method was developed for quantitation of AA and DHAA that combines HPLC separation with the advantages of increased sensitivity and selectivity available …

Theses and Dissertations

A total of 192 jury-qualified subjects participated in this study which compared the effects of a child's videotaped deposition on juror's perceptions of a defendant's guilt to live in-court testimony. A three hour trial, videotaped from a simulated case of child physical use being conducted for the Trial Advocacy Class of the University of North Dakota Law school, was shown to all subjects. A separate deposition of the child's testimony, identical to the live testimony, was also videotaped and shown to half the subjects. Eight juries viewed the videotapes of the trial with the child testifying on the witness stand …

The Use Of Transition Metal Complexes For The Construction Of Unusual Metal-Modified Phosphorus Linkages Between Nucleosides., Theresa Jo Schmaltz Jul 1991

The Use Of Transition Metal Complexes For The Construction Of Unusual Metal-Modified Phosphorus Linkages Between Nucleosides., Theresa Jo Schmaltz

Theses and Dissertations

Oligonucleotides based on methyl phosphonate linkages between nucleoside units have been of particular interest as anti-sense molecules for inhibiting mRNA function. The focus of our research has been on the development of new construction techniques for anti-sense oligonucleotides. Specifically we have been investigating new methods for generating iron and cobalt-modified linkages in oligonucleotides during the course of automated synthesis. We have found that (dicarbonyl)($\eta\sp5$-cyclopentadienyl)($\eta\sp2$-ethylene)iron reacts with 5$\sp\prime$-O-dimethoxytritylnucleoside 3$\sp\prime$-phosphite esters to yield (dicarbonyl)($\eta\sp5$-cyclopentadienyl)iron(ethyl)phosphonates. These phosphonates appear to be stable to the conditions commonly used to construct oligonucleotides by phosphoramidite methodology. This chemistry has been extended to the formation of a dimer on …

Understanding Craving For Cigarettes: A Multidimensional Assessment Approach, H. Katherine O'Neill May 1991

Understanding Craving For Cigarettes: A Multidimensional Assessment Approach, H. Katherine O'Neill

Theses and Dissertations

Cigarette smoking is a serious health hazard affecting a sizeable proportion of the adult population. The addictive nature of cigarettes has been blamed for the difficulty smokers experience in achieving and maintaining abstinence. Cigarette cravings are frequently cited as a factor contributing to relapse. Addiction theories proposed independently by Wikler, Siegel, and Solomon view cravings as classically conditioned responses to internal or external cues. These responses are presumably multidimensional, having cognitive, emotional, and physiological manifestations.

The current study examined cigarette cravings under controlled laboratory conditions. Forty-six male and female undergraduates served as participants. Stimuli commonly associated with smoking relapse were …

The Norwegian Short-Term Parochial School (Religionsskole) In North Dakota Lutheran Congregations, 1880s-1930s, Erik Luther Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

Within the Norwegian-American community of the United States and North Dakota there is a memory of "Norwegian Schools" held mainly in summers. These schools taught the essence of Lutheranism with hymn singing, and Norwegian grammar and literature. These schools seemed pervasive in North Dakota, but there is little material on them.. General church histories neglected them; Sunday School seemed dominant. People who had attended or taught the Norwegian Schools in the early twentieth century were becoming fewer. It was appropriate to research the schools before recollection faded and significance waned.

Research began with anniversary pamphlets of Lutheran churches which affirmed …
