Reagan Budget Cuts And City Spending On Welfare And Housing And Community Development, Lillian L. Eid May 1994

Reagan Budget Cuts And City Spending On Welfare And Housing And Community Development, Lillian L. Eid

Theses and Dissertations

In President Reagan's New Federalism, the federal government had a decreased role in the domestic sector and the state and local governments had increased roles with more of the responsibilities. His grants-in-aid policy made the states play a larger leadership role. Reagan was critical of welfare and redistributive services programs. Under Reagan, was the federal government more apt to cut programs that targeted the poor and were the state and local governments less apt to replace the cuts? The point of the research was to determine the impact of the 1981 Reagan budget cuts on city spending for welfare and …

Global Picture Archiving And Communication Systems (Gpacs): An Overview, Russell C. Ellis Apr 1994

Global Picture Archiving And Communication Systems (Gpacs): An Overview, Russell C. Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

The world is currently experiencing a computer revolution. With the expansion and development of new computer technology, the age of video is upon us. The medical world is also currently undergoing a dramatic change. With the development and perfection of non-invasive techniques of probing the body, large amounts of computer data is collected and much of it is used to generate images. The organization and management of these images is the topic of this thesis. The discussion of storage schemes, databases, communications and data compression techniques gives the reader a background and some insight to the current state of the …

Sense Of Coherence And Perception: Does Stress Resistance Equal Illusion?, Cheri L. Hexum Mar 1994

Sense Of Coherence And Perception: Does Stress Resistance Equal Illusion?, Cheri L. Hexum

Theses and Dissertations

Sense of Coherence (SOC) is a personality characteristic which has been linked to mental and physical health. However, the factors that contribute to this link are, as yet, unclear. Our understanding of the link between personality and health may be improved by examining how personality characteristics manifest in specific circumstances (i.e., how they affect perceptions and judgments). The knowledge gained through the depressive realism research (which has looked at personality differences by examining their effect on perceptions and judgments in specific, controlled circumstances) was applied to SOC theory in an attempt to further clarify how SOC may influence our judgments. …

Relationships Between High School Size And University Major For 1989--1990 And 1990--1991 Graduates From The University Of North Dakota And North Dakota State University., Mary Jo Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between high school size and university major for 1989-90 and 1990-91 baccalaureate graduates from the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University. The general research question investigated the relationship between the size of the high school graduating class and the student's major area of concentration when graduating from college. The number of students reviewed in this study was 1,455 of which 761 were UND graduates and 694 were NDSU graduates. The North Dakota Higher Education Computer Network Student Information System and the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction were …

A Hermeneutic Analysis Of Childhood Verbal, Physical, And Sexual Abuse And Women's Identity Development., Sandra Marie Deraney-Reilly Mar 1994

A Hermeneutic Analysis Of Childhood Verbal, Physical, And Sexual Abuse And Women's Identity Development., Sandra Marie Deraney-Reilly

Theses and Dissertations

Seventy-four women who were concurrently receiving mental health services, were administered a structured interview which explored childhood verbal, physical and sexual abuse, and the perceived effects associated with each type of abuse. It was common for one type of abuse to be found in unison with another type. The interview questions also asked the respondent to describe themselves as children, their parental relationships, and patterns in adult relationships. Interpretive content analyses were used to organize the responses and summarize the findings. Sexual abuse particularly affected later sexual relationships, but also created a pervasive sense of mistrust that impacted relationships in …

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To Automating Satellite Range Scheduling, Donald A. Parish Mar 1994

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To Automating Satellite Range Scheduling, Donald A. Parish

Theses and Dissertations

Satellite range scheduling involves scheduling satellite supports in which a satellite and a specific remote tracking station communicate with each other within a specified time window. As the number of satellite supports continue to increase, more pressure is placed on the current manual system to generate schedules efficiently. Previous research efforts focused on heuristic and mixed-integer programming approaches which may not produce the best results. The objective of this research was to determine if a genetic algorithm approach to automating the generation of 24 hour schedules was competitive with other methods. The goal was to schedule as many supports as …

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls Jan 1994

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls

Theses and Dissertations

This study measures risk-taking predisposition among a conservative religious population of women, in this instance Mormon women. Risk taking is defined as a recognition of some probability of negative consequences to an action, which can include the loss of a potential reward as well as a punishment. A risk-taking predisposition results when individuals are not risk aversive but, in fact, enjoy risk taking.

Survey research collected at two conferences in Utah reveal the likelihood of moderate levels of rebellious and adventurous risk-taking predisposition among the over 500 Mormon women respondents. It is suggested that religious affiliation or economic and educational …

Other-Centeredness And Depression In A Sample Of Mormon Women, Janice G. Nielson Jan 1994

Other-Centeredness And Depression In A Sample Of Mormon Women, Janice G. Nielson

Theses and Dissertations

Other-centeredness and depression were examined to see if a relationship existed between the two. One scale measuring other-centeredness and another measuring depression were given to a sample of married Mormon women who did not work outside the home. Other-centeredness and depression were significantly negatively correlated. The women scoring in the top one-third of the range of other-centeredness scores suffered no depression on the depression scale. The factor most predictive for depression was the relationship the women had with her husband, and other-centeredness was found to overlap with this variable to some extent. The factors of health, income, and education were …

Review Of The P53 Tumor Suppressor Gene And Its Role In Gliomas, James Dearing Christian Jan 1994

Review Of The P53 Tumor Suppressor Gene And Its Role In Gliomas, James Dearing Christian

Theses and Dissertations

The following review of the p53 tumor suppressor gene will be discussed with particular attention to its role in human gliomas, as well as the various advances that have brought this molecule to the forefront of cancer research. A review of tumorigenesis focuses on the molecular mechanisms that convey neoplastic characteristics upon a normal cell. It is discussed how the coordinate advances in chromosome analysis and molecular techniques enabled the p53 gene to be categorized as a "tumor suppressor gene" and applied to various forms of cancer, including colorectal and lung carcinoma. The focus of the review will be on …

A Comparison Of Wellhead Protection Area Delineation Methods At Larimore, North Dakota, Barbara L. Sahl Jan 1994

A Comparison Of Wellhead Protection Area Delineation Methods At Larimore, North Dakota, Barbara L. Sahl

Theses and Dissertations

Many communities in North Dakota rely on water from shallow, unconfined aquifers that are vulnerable to contamination. A strategy to protect public groundwater supplies is the delineation of wellhead protection areas (WHPAs) around the area which contributes water to a well. Several delineation methods are available, all of which have simplifying assumptions which affect the size or shape of a predicted WHPA.

Five WHPA delineation methods were compared to determine which simplified the aquifer/well system while preserving essential hydrogeologic features. A simple system may not require a complex model to predict an accurate WHPA. Sensitivity of each to changes in …
