The Development Of Grading Procedures For Students With Educational Disabilities Attending Regular Education Classes, Kathleen Sharp Sweeder
The Development Of Grading Procedures For Students With Educational Disabilities Attending Regular Education Classes, Kathleen Sharp Sweeder
Theses and Dissertations
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act states that children with disabilities must be educated, to the maximum extent possible and appropriate, in the regular education setting with non-handicapped children. The purpose of this study was to develop grading procedures for students with educational disabilities who attend regular education classes. Current district policies, the teachers' procedures for grading students, and the best practices presented in literature were investigated. Is grading students with educational disabilities in the regular education setting a concern for teachers? Should this school district develop a grading policy for students with educational disabilities? A teacher questionnaire was developed …

The Learning Needs Of People Over The Age Of 60., M. Wayne Alexander
Theses and Dissertations
U.S. citizens remain healthy as they live to increasingly older ages. How shall the growing number of older people fill their expanding leisure time? Do they need to engage in learning activities in order to keep their wits about them? Which learning activities do they want? How do they want them structured? Which methods should their teachers use? What type of academic opportunities does higher education provide to older people? What causes the activities available to differ from those desired? Which goods and services do the aged need to help them take advantage of higher education opportunities? To investigate these issues …

The Transition From Junior High School To Middle School: Case Studies From North Dakota., Anne Shearer-Shineman
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the transformation process used by three North Dakota schools that previously operated as traditional junior high schools prior to changing to middle schools. The schools represented distinct situations in demographics, enrollment, and the process used to implement change. Through close inspection of three settings, I considered whether or not processes, problems, or successes common to all three schools existed. The most important questions dealt with the transition process used in each case and the result. Relevant information sought for the study included the rationale for implementation, description of the planning process, length of the transition process, and …

The Influence Of Out-Group Network Ties On The Television Usage And Attitudes Of Mormon Women, Lois D. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Analysis of survey data collected from more than 400 LDS women (n=429) indicates that as the number of non-LDS or inactive LDS network associates increases, so does the women's identification with modern female TV characters. The frequency of network conversations about television also correlates to several television behaviors and attitudes such as watching entertainment and informational TV programming, identifying with modern characters, and regarding TV as useful. Mirroring the national trend, LDS women who are more educated use television less. A model is presented which details the flow and impact of personal network influence on the television habits and attitudes …
Prophets, Planning, And Politics: Utah's Planning Heritage And Its Significance Today And Tomorrow, Janna K. Bushman
Prophets, Planning, And Politics: Utah's Planning Heritage And Its Significance Today And Tomorrow, Janna K. Bushman
Theses and Dissertations
Utah's planning heritage includes both physical and social elements. In 1833 Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, designed the Plat for the City of Zion. Associated with his plan were the principles of communitarianism and a demo-theocratic form of government. As the Mormons journeyed across the Midwest to the Great Basin, they applied these planning beliefs in various ways. Throughout Utah today, large city blocks, wide roads, and grid iron layouts remain as testaments to the state's early physical planning tenets. Other factors, though, have led Mormons to abandon the social aspects of the plan and to embrace the …

Within-Year Persistence Of Students Enrolled In Graduate And Professional Programs: The Influence Of Background, Graduate/Professional Experience, Academic Aspirations, Expected Earnings, And Student Financial Aid, Susan Clark Deangelis
Theses and Dissertations
The implications of graduate and professional student attrition are felt by many--the individual, the institution, business and industry, the education system, and society as a whole. Yet, very little research has been conducted on the factors which influence the persistence of graduate and professional students. Such data could reduce graduate and professional student attrition through the development of educational programs, institutional and public policy, as well as to identify types of students for whom specific policies should be developed to encourage persistence. To address this need, a new logistic model of graduate and professional student within-year persistence based on the …

Electrophysiological Effects Of Lysoplasmenylcholine On Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes, Ray Caldwell
Electrophysiological Effects Of Lysoplasmenylcholine On Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes, Ray Caldwell
Theses and Dissertations
Myocardial ischemia activates a phospholipase A2 that targets plasmalogen phospholipids and liberates 1-0-alkenyl-Iysoplasmenylcholine (LPLC) in preference to 1-0- acyl-Iysophosphatidylcholine (LPC). Although LPC is a pro arrhythmic ischemic metabolite, the effect of LPLC on cardiac electrophysiology is unknown. At the lowest doses investigated, LPLC induced spontaneous contractions in otherwise quiescent rabbit ventricular myocytes significantly faster than LPC. Spontaneous contractions developed with median times of 16.4 (n = 64), 27.4 (n = 36), and >60 min (n = 25) during exposure to 5, 2.5, and 1 JlM LPLC compared with 38.0 (n = 48) and >60 min (n = 29) for 5 …
