Theses and Dissertations
This project identified, through both primary and secondary research, techniques for local United Way organizations to effectively gain access to key executives at mid-size corporations. The secondary research found that the trend in corporate giving is to demand much more recognition for philanthropy. Many corporations are combining charitable donations with their marketing efforts to target present or future customers.
Primary research was conducted using mail questionnaires, which were sent to fund raisers and corporate givers, listing possible techniques for making contact with corporate givers. A list of recommended techniques for fund raisers to use was then compiled.
Recommendations for fund …
Capture Of Alkali During Pressurized Fluidized-Bed Combustion Using In-Bed Sorbents., Michael David Mann
Capture Of Alkali During Pressurized Fluidized-Bed Combustion Using In-Bed Sorbents., Michael David Mann
Theses and Dissertations
Pressurized fluidized bed combustion (PFBC) offers the ability to reach high system efficiencies while controlling both SO$\sb2$ and NO$\rm\sb {x}$ emissions. However, current technology does not allow the capture of alkali to the recommended level of 24 ppb set by turbine manufacturers. Aluminosilicate minerals have the potential to capture alkali, especially sodium and potassium, under conditions typical of the fluid bed (750 to 1000$\sp\circ$C). When alkalis and alkaline-earth elements react with aluminosilicate minerals, phases have been observed which result in the formation of sodalites, such as hauyne and nosean, that have cubo-octahedral structure capable of incorporating sulfate and chlorine anions.Thermal …

A Raster-Based Gis Analysis Of The Cumulative Impacts Of Humans And Beaver On Wetland Area And Types In The Chickahominy River Watershed (Virginia, Usa) From 1953 To 1994, Alexandra Dunya Syphard
Theses and Dissertations
Despite increased recognition of wetland functions and values, wetland loss and degradation continues in the United States. Digital wetlands and uplands coverages were analyzed to compare the cumulative impacts of humans and beaver (Castor canadensis) on wetland types in the Chickahominy River watershed (Virginia, USA) from 1953 to 1994. A vector-based approach was used for data manipulation, and a raster-based approach was chosen to analyze geographic change over time. Study findings indicated that anthropogenic activities were responsible for both wetland loss and gain in the watershed, and beavers substantially influenced shifting between wetland types. Wetland area increased 4% over 41 …

A Methodology For Studying Denitrification By Recently Formed Sulfides, Bethany A. Bolles
A Methodology For Studying Denitrification By Recently Formed Sulfides, Bethany A. Bolles
Theses and Dissertations
Nitrate (N03) contamination due to anthropogenic sources is a serious and widespread health problem. In many groundwater systems, N03-can be reduced to a harmless gas, N2, through the bacterially mediated process of denitrification. During this process, bacteria gain energy by transferring electrons from an "electron donor" to nitrate, the "electron acceptor". It is typically believed that organic carbon is the most important electron donor in the denitrification process; however, increasing amounts of research suggest the importance of inorganic electron donors. The most extensive studies involving the reduction ofN03- by inorganic species have focused on pyrite (FeS2) and Fe(II). Few studies …

Female Medical Residents And Stress: Origins, Impacts, And Coping Responses, Brenda Mcgehee Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Stress research studies of medical residents in the 1970s and 1980s found that female residents cope less well than male residents. Coping strategies, as well as origins and impact of stress, of 12 female residents were examined in the contexts of their environment. This qualitative ethnographic study was organized around the transactional cognitive theory of stress and coping. Female residents coped well, with use of a variety of strong support relationships, and were creative and flexible in combining their personal and professional lives. The quality of interpersonal communication and support, rather than the existence, appeared to have the greatest effect …
Employment Discrimination On The Basis Of Sexual Orientation In Institutions Of Higher Education: A Survey Of Faculty Opinions, Catherine Ann Christie
Employment Discrimination On The Basis Of Sexual Orientation In Institutions Of Higher Education: A Survey Of Faculty Opinions, Catherine Ann Christie
Theses and Dissertations
Federal law does not prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. As is the case for other professionals, an educator who is a gay male or lesbian has had no protection from this form of discrimination unless it is specifically prohibited by a state or local law, or an institutional policy. Because they have been legally prohibited from marrying, domestic partners of gay and lesbian educators have not been entitled to share the employment benefits of their partners. This study examined opinions of faculty in four-year colleges and universities in Arkansas regarding employment discrimination based on sexual orientation in institutions …

In Vivo And In Vitro Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Spectroscopy Of Psychoactive Drugs In Rat Brain, Diana M. Lindquist
Theses and Dissertations
Four psychoactive drugs were studied using various in vivo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Trifluoperazine (TFP) was given to several normal rats, whose brains were then studied using in vivo fluorine-19 NMR. Three peaks were detected in the in vivo fluorine spectra: one at -62 ppm, which was due to TFP, and two others at -55 and -75 ppm, which are due to unknown metabolites of TFP. Samples of skin, skull, muscle, and brain were obtained from these rats and extracted for in vitro analysis. The metabolites responsible for the in vivo peak at -75 ppm also appeared in the …
