N-Acetyltransferase Genetic Polymorphisms And Breast Cancer Risk., Anne Carlson Deitz Dec 1999

N-Acetyltransferase Genetic Polymorphisms And Breast Cancer Risk., Anne Carlson Deitz

Theses and Dissertations

Aromatic and heterocyclic amine carcinogens found in cigarette smoke and well done meat require host-mediated metabolic activation before initiating tumors in target organs. The N-acetyltransferase isozymes, NAT1 and NAT2, catalyze the activation (O-acetylation) of aromatic and heterocyclic amines and also the deactivation (N-acetylation) of aromatic amines. Both NAT1 and NAT2 are subject to genetic polymorphisms. Using molecular epidemiological studies, in vitro studies in human mammary tissues, and a genetically defined rapid and slow acetylator congenic hamster model, we tested our hypothesis that rapid NAT1 and/or NAT2 acetylators are at an increased risk of breast cancer, especially those women exposed to …

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of divalent cations such as cadmium, calcium, copper, lead and magnesium upon the prophenoloxidase system (proPO) was studied in hemocytes of the crayfish Cambarus latimanus. It was demonstrated that cadmium, calcium, copper and lead increased proPO activity significantly, whereas magnesium had no statistically significant effect on the system. Also, the molecular weight of the proPO enzyme was estimated using SDS-PAGE and found to be approximately 76 kDa.

Affective And Motivational Components Of The Flow State: Rock Climbing Revisited, Helen Hooper Dec 1999

Affective And Motivational Components Of The Flow State: Rock Climbing Revisited, Helen Hooper

Theses and Dissertations

The affective and experiential components of the flow state, as outlined by Csikszentmihalyi (1975), have served as a basis for research into optimal experience over the past twenty years, and although adjustments have been made by various researchers, the description of the characteristics remain essentially the same. This study used qualitative methods to further explore this area . With the initial aim of enhancing our understanding of the optimal experiences of rock climbing participants, the present study purposefully sampled fifteen informants representative of the range of characteristics found in the setting. Questioning techniques and analysis methods used in this study …

Development Of A Construction Safety Program, Christopher Haux Dec 1999

Development Of A Construction Safety Program, Christopher Haux

Theses and Dissertations

In the mid to late 1990's the United States has been experiencing a thriving economy which has spurred increased amounts of construction. During this time of prosperity, the quality of work and the safety of workers can often be forgotten. Each of these areas becomes important to those involved, and to the ability to continue a strong and prosperous economy. Safety to those who produce and those who buy is a sign of a strong economy and a strong community; because construction of communities is what we are really doing.

Predicting Post-Disaster Adjustment After The Red River Flood: An Analysis Of Resource Loss And Pre-Flood Preventative Behaviors, Holly J. Hegstad

Theses and Dissertations

The Conservation of Resources theory postulates that individuals will act to obtain, retain, or protect those resources that are of value to them (Hobfall, 1989). Natural disasters often result in depletion of resources, the extent of which has been found to be a robust predictor of post-disaster adjustment (Freedy, Hobfall, & Ribbe, 1994; Freedy, Shaw, Jarrel, & Masters, 1992; Norris & Uhl, 1993; Smith & Freedy, 1994). Three-hundred-four victims (131 males, 171 females) of the 1997 flood of the Red River returned surveys assessing their levels of preparation, resource losses, and psychopathology 12 to 16 months after the flood. It …

Operational Risk Management And Military Aviation Safety, Park D. Ashley Sep 1999

Operational Risk Management And Military Aviation Safety, Park D. Ashley

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force Class A aviation mishap rate has hovered around 1.5 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours since 1985. Recent attention on Air Force accidents has caused the leadership to seek to reduce its mishap rate. The Army's Class A aviation mishap rate declined after it implemented risk management (RM) principles in 1987. This reduction caught the attention of Air Force leadership who have since stated that the application of operational risk management (ORM) is how the Air Force will reduce, even eliminate, mishaps. With current budget constraints, ORM is considered to be the most cost-effective way the Air Force …

Workplace Violence: Exploring The Dangers For Air Force Leadership, Shawn R. Jones Sep 1999

Workplace Violence: Exploring The Dangers For Air Force Leadership, Shawn R. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

The repeated occurrences of workplace violence throughout society today require the Air Force to evaluate its own workplaces and determine if a threat exists. This research explored violence in the workplace and established the possibility that workplace violence can affect the Air Force. Additionally, Air Force Climate Assessment Surveys were evaluated to find information that could be useful in detecting early warning signs of potential workplace violence. A number of examples of violence that occurred within Air Force workplaces highlighted the threat for Air Force leadership. With over 1,680 incidents of workplace violence reported to the AFOSI in a 5-year …

Nine females who met International Headache Society diagnostic criteria for either migraine, with or without aura (n = …

Listening Comprehension In Alcoholics., Sandra Owens Jul 1999

Listening Comprehension In Alcoholics., Sandra Owens

Theses and Dissertations

The literature on alcoholism has firmly established that impairments in cognition can remain for several weeks or longer in the detoxified alcoholic. Whether this impairment can impact relapse rates has been studied. In general, poor recovery on abstract reasoning, visual spatial tasks, and problem solving have been linked to higher relapse rates. Older age and less education can interact with cognitive impairments and increase relapse rates. Because the treatment modalities are dependent on listening and processing of information, there was a question as to what extent listening comprehension was impacted following detoxification, and to what degree deficits in this area …

A Descriptive Study Of Body Dysmorphia And Body Image In Mid-Life Women, Marsha B. Mcfarland Jul 1999

A Descriptive Study Of Body Dysmorphia And Body Image In Mid-Life Women, Marsha B. Mcfarland

Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about how women perceive and feel about their bodies at midlife. The popular media prescribe a standard of ideal female appearance that equates beauty with youth and thinness, features that are altered by the passing years. Much of the research about body image that includes midlife women has been conducted in a framework of pathology. Because there is little research that documents women's feelings and perceptions about their bodies in adulthood, this phenomenological study describes the body image concerns of women at midlife. Instruments administered during the course of the study included the Beck Depression Inventory, the …

Theses and Dissertations

Consideration of cultural appropriateness in using Westem-European standardized intelligence measures with Native Americans for clinical and educational purposes has been neglected by professionals in the field of clinical assessment. Some studies suggest the possibility of a “Native American Pattern” on such tests, indicating a consistent, yet little-understood discrepancy. The present study investigated the impact of cultural identification of Native American college students on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III). The study assessed the relationship between cultural identification and cognitive-testing scores between two groups of Native American college students. The first group consisted of off-reservation Native American students attending the …

Modulating Effects Of Time Of Day On Age Differences In Memory Performance: Attention Versus Inhibition, Iwona Chelminski Jul 1999

Modulating Effects Of Time Of Day On Age Differences In Memory Performance: Attention Versus Inhibition, Iwona Chelminski

Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests that some cognitive processes follow a circadian rhythm, and the peak performance periods correlate with individual patterns of physiological arousal. Recent findings in the literature suggest that the optimal time synchrony may modulate the magnitude of age differences in cognitive performance across time of day. The first goal of the present study was to further investigate the so-called “synchrony effects” in younger and older adults. The second purpose was to offer and examine an alternative explanation for the “synchrony effect” phenomenon related to deficits in attentional resources rather than inefficient inhibition. And the third purpose of this study …
