Trudging Through The Brakes: Mapping River Cane (Arundinaria Gigantea (Walter) Muhl.) And Canebrake Habitat In 19th Century Arkansas, Patrick Solomon

Theses and Dissertations

River cane (A. gigantea) is one of three bamboos native to the North American continent but has been greatly diminished since European colonization. To explore this lost landscape, this paper applies an interdisciplinary approach to examine and interpret the pre-historic, historic, and current status of cane and canebrake habitat in Arkansas. Historic cane data has been collected and used to create an informed map of canebrake habitat in 19th century Arkansas. To examine references in more detail, cane points collected within the five study areas have been examined using a Geographic Information System. Maps of historic cane references have been …

(Re)Imagining Eminent Domain: The Embodied Imaginaries Of The Atlantic Yards – Barclays Center Project, Gabriel Frey Schuster

Theses and Dissertations

Eminent domain is generally treated by legal geographers as a tool of the state. This thesis applies legal and feminist geographies to the case of the Atlantic Yards development in Brooklyn so as to reframe eminent domain as a spatio-legal intervention complicating traditional notions of scale and power.

The Grid As Organizing Principle Of Space, Information, Time, And Display, Sam Sherman Jan 2021

The Grid As Organizing Principle Of Space, Information, Time, And Display, Sam Sherman

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several centuries, the grid has colonized nearly every aspect of human life. This text traces the development of the grid in technology and art, and links the grid’s proliferation to the rise of modern governance. The grid has become the primary tool by which government exerts social control via the production of spectacle. As such, artists have increasingly recognized the grid as a central problematic to confront rather than reiterate. Within this context, I consider two of my videos: Today’s News (2020) and Tiles (2020).

The Nabataean Façade Monuments Of Petra, Jordan: An Assessment Of The Façade Monuments And Their Geological Environment., Josie M. Newbold Jan 2021

The Nabataean Façade Monuments Of Petra, Jordan: An Assessment Of The Façade Monuments And Their Geological Environment., Josie M. Newbold

Theses and Dissertations

The Nabataean people controlled the Petra region of modern-day Jordan from sometime before 300 BCE until the Roman Annexation of the Nabataean kingdom in 106 CE. The Nabataeans are known for the monumental façades carved into the sandstone cliffs surrounding their capital city. The first survey of the façade monuments was undertaken by Brünnow and Domaszewski in 1904. They created a typology that has only been slightly modified by subsequent authors including Judith McKenzie (1990). This typology does not account for all of the variations in façade types in Petra, thus creating a need for a new typology proposed in …

Teacher Perceptions & Practice Of Technology Integration Before And After Picrat Matrix Professional Development Intervention, Donald H. Heberer Jr. Jan 2021

Teacher Perceptions & Practice Of Technology Integration Before And After Picrat Matrix Professional Development Intervention, Donald H. Heberer Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Professional development provides support and training to teachers using new technologies. Several educational technology models, guidelines, and frameworks have provided educators a guide to effective technology integration. Building upon previous models like the SAMR model (Puentedura, 2013), the TPCK model (Misrah and & Koehler, 2005), and the RAT model (Hughes, 1998), a new model called the PICRAT matrix (Kimmons, 2018) has emerged. PICRAT accounts for both the student’s interaction with educational technology and the teacher's use of technology in instructional practice. The purpose of this study was to examine teacher perceptions and instructional practice on educational technology before and after …

A Case Study Of Administrator, Teacher, And Parent Perceptions And Usage Of Infinite Campus At The Secondary Level, Michael Kenneth Larson Jan 2021

A Case Study Of Administrator, Teacher, And Parent Perceptions And Usage Of Infinite Campus At The Secondary Level, Michael Kenneth Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that parent involvement has been associated with positive academic outcomes, including but not limited to, increased academic performance, lower rates of retention/failure, increased self-regulatory behavior, higher social functioning, and reduced special education placements (Anderson & Minke, 2007; Scharton, 2019).

The use of on-line data management systems has proliferated over the course of the past decade. Throughout the 1990s, computer technology rapidly expanded in United States public schools. Between 1996-1997, U.S. school districts had added 500,000 computers for administrative use (Darby & Hughes, 2005). The passage of No Child Left behind (NCLB) and Race to the Top bolstered …

Preparing Preservice Teachers To Facilitate Courageous Conversations: A Case Study Of Social Studies Teacher Educators' Perceptions And Practices, Ariel N. Henry Jan 2021

Preparing Preservice Teachers To Facilitate Courageous Conversations: A Case Study Of Social Studies Teacher Educators' Perceptions And Practices, Ariel N. Henry

Theses and Dissertations

Scholars and associations committed to powerful social studies education have long advocated for students to explore controversial issues so they grow into informed, ethical, and participating citizens. Yet, teachers avoid undertaking this work due to a lack of training, confidence, or experience in facilitating courageous conversations about tough issues. Teachers may fear facing complaints and retribution. They may worry about how to defuse classroom tensions and manage strong emotions. While scholarship on teaching controversy has primarily focused on preservice and in-service teachers’ views and experiences, research examining teacher educators’ perceptions and practices has been limited. The purpose of this qualitative …

A Case Study On The Implementation Of Disciplinary Literacy With Multimodal Design In Social Studies, John J. Castaldo Jan 2021

A Case Study On The Implementation Of Disciplinary Literacy With Multimodal Design In Social Studies, John J. Castaldo

Theses and Dissertations

Social studies education provides education researchers with a less common opportunity to discover multimodal instructional methods for disciplinary literacy. During a 12-week period in 2021, four social studies teachers with at least one history course in a large suburban Mercer County, New Jersey school district participated in a case study to showcase how disciplinary literacy can be implemented using multimodal design. Given the existing lack of research on instructional literacy design for secondary grades, this study provides researchers and practitioners with multiple perspectives on how to maximize teaching practices in underrepresented areas of education. Significantly, social studies teachers will thus …

“I Have Gone Beyond My Sphere”: Network Analysis And Rhetorical Feminism In Women’S Writing 1650-1750, Donna P. Downing Jan 2021

“I Have Gone Beyond My Sphere”: Network Analysis And Rhetorical Feminism In Women’S Writing 1650-1750, Donna P. Downing

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of a contrasting public sphere and private sphere is both enduring and contested. The model of the eighteenth century public sphere offered by Jürgen Habermas offers a rational-critical approach to public discourse, while bracketing difference. Interlocutors of Habermas see such exclusion as problematic, particularly from a feminist standpoint. In contrast to Habermas’ static model, this project offers a networked, motile vision of public and private spheres that allows for interconnections and relationships, and which not only incorporates conceptual differences, but in fact relies on them. In this flexible model, rhetorical feminism, where the ideology of feminism is brought …

A Mixed Methods Approach To Initiating A Critical Global Literacy Curriculum In The Rural High School English/Language Arts Classroom, Amy Brown Jan 2021

A Mixed Methods Approach To Initiating A Critical Global Literacy Curriculum In The Rural High School English/Language Arts Classroom, Amy Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary society consists of emerging globalization where students will face global issues and will be expected to think critically in the professional realm. However, critical literacy and global literacy are often largely ignored in the rural high school ELA classroom where fewer cultural opportunities exist and less diversity is evident (Riley, 2015). The purpose of this study was to address a significant need for understanding the strengths and weaknesses of implementing a critical global curricular framework in a rural high school ELA classroom. Additionally, this study aimed to uncover both student and teacher perspectives regarding this implementation as well as …

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Public Libraries: An Exploratory Case Study Of A Library System In A Majority-Black, Suburban District, Sarah M. Garifo Jan 2021

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Public Libraries: An Exploratory Case Study Of A Library System In A Majority-Black, Suburban District, Sarah M. Garifo

Theses and Dissertations

The theory of culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) (Ladson-Billings, 1995) has been applied primarily in K-12 settings to help educators engage with learners from diverse cultural backgrounds. I argue that public librarians are also educators whose practice is grounded in the need for cultural relevance. However, a review of the literature indicates that CRP has not been applied to the work of public librarianship. I conducted an exploratory case study in order to address this gap in the literature. The population for this study was the staff of “Green County Public Library” (GCPL), a public library system in a majority-Black, suburban …

Leading In Crooked Rooms: Race, Gender, Culture And Black Women's Leadership Skills And Practices, Portia Newman Jan 2021

Leading In Crooked Rooms: Race, Gender, Culture And Black Women's Leadership Skills And Practices, Portia Newman

Theses and Dissertations

The literature on Black women leaders, where it exists, focuses on the barriers to Black women becoming leaders or being fully empowered when in leadership positions. However, to understand the leadership identity of Black women, and perhaps help to explain the absence of Black women in formal leadership spaces, means to examine the influence of race, gender, and culture on leadership behavior, as well as the setting in which leadership exists. This qualitative grounded theory study explored the leadership skills and practices of 15 senior-level cross sector Black women leaders. The data was collected in two phases: 1) a leadership …

A Multilevel Mixed Methods Examination Of Treatment Nonadherence Among Rural Cancer Survivors, Bonny Morris Jan 2021

A Multilevel Mixed Methods Examination Of Treatment Nonadherence Among Rural Cancer Survivors, Bonny Morris

Theses and Dissertations

While mortality rates have been decreasing over the last 40 years, cancer remains a leading cause of death in the United States. Over 1.7 million people were diagnosed with cancer in 2019, and there were more than 600,000 cancer deaths. Of the 15 million cancer survivors in the US, nearly 3 million reside in rural areas and experience 3% higher cancer incidence and 10% higher cancer mortality compared to their nonrural counterparts. During 2006-2015, the annual age-adjusted mortality rates for all cancer sites combined decreased at a slower pace in rural areas versus nonrural areas (-1.0% vs -1.6% per year, …

Effects Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors On Hornworm Distributions, Emelia O. Kusi Jan 2021

Effects Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors On Hornworm Distributions, Emelia O. Kusi

Theses and Dissertations

Determining the drivers of species occurrences is a central topic in ecology. Both abiotic and biotic factors are important predictors of species distributions, yet most species distribution models consider abiotic variables only. In this study, the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on current distributions of herbivores, Manduca sexta, and Manduca quinquemaculata, their major cultivated and wild host plants, and a parasitoid, Cotesia congregata, was quantified using an ensemble of three models (generalized linear model, maximum entropy, and random forest). The predictive ability of abiotic-only, biotic-only, and abiotic-biotic models was evaluated. Winter temperatures and precipitation (i.e., precipitation of …

Preventing Obesity: A Social Ecological Exploration Of Centers For Disease Control Prevention Strategies And Guidance Toward Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, And Communities, Ryan Kelly Jan 2021

Preventing Obesity: A Social Ecological Exploration Of Centers For Disease Control Prevention Strategies And Guidance Toward Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, And Communities, Ryan Kelly

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Obesity has reached nearly 40% of the adult public in the United States, costing the citizen taxpayer over $200 billion annually in healthcare costs. Those suffering from obesity deal with multiple physical and mental repercussions. Through a content analysis of four Centers for Disease Control (CDC) documents and guided by the conceptual framework of the social ecological model, this research explores the federal approach to preventing obesity. The analysis finds that CDC solutions to obesity involve connecting people to each other and healthier choices, an orientation toward local public administration, and an emphasis on environmental and infrastructure improvements. The …

Straight Through My Heart, Raul A. Aguilar Canela Jan 2021

Straight Through My Heart, Raul A. Aguilar Canela

Theses and Dissertations

Straight through my heart is an exhibition that explores the concept of heartbreak as a socio-political phenomenon. Through the affect of sadness the thesis analyses the way in which subjects are formed under cognitive capitalism. Paying particular interest to the collateral effects of neoliberal culture —hyper-stimulation, self-exploitation, competition, and obsession with productivity—and the pathologies they create —depression, anxiety, body aches, fatigue— this work shifts the burden of sadness from the individual to the community. By doing so it proposes heartbreak as a public feeling.

Tender Perception: The Ethics Of Existence And Nonliving Objects’ Movement In Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons, Timothy Berge Jan 2021

Tender Perception: The Ethics Of Existence And Nonliving Objects’ Movement In Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons, Timothy Berge

Theses and Dissertations

In exploring the relationship between Gertrude Stein's and Henri Bergson's lectures on movement this posits a conception of democracy embedded in Stein's poetry where everything that moves exists and everything that exists has a stake in the landscape in which it exists. Tender Buttons describes objects in ways that highlight the movement of nonliving matter, evoking current scholarship in new materialism, particularly Jane Bennett. After establishing a relationship between Bergson and Stein, this thesis turns to Jane Bennett teasing out the political and ecological implications of Stein's conception of movement in inanimate objects.

Modeling Continental-Scale Outdoor Environmental Sound Levels With Limited Data, Katrina Lynn Pedersen Jan 2021

Modeling Continental-Scale Outdoor Environmental Sound Levels With Limited Data, Katrina Lynn Pedersen

Theses and Dissertations

Modeling outdoor acoustic environments is a challenging problem because outdoor acoustic environments are the combination of diverse sources and propagation effects, including barriers to propagation such as buildings or vegetation. Outdoor acoustic environments are most commonly modeled on small geographic scales (e.g., within a single city). Extending modeling efforts to continental scales is particularly challenging due to an increase in the variety of geographic environments. Furthermore, acoustic data on which to train and validate models are expensive to collect and therefore relatively limited. It is unclear how models trained on this limited acoustic data will perform across continental-scales, which likely …

The Dutch Atlantic And American Life: Beginnings Of America In Colonial New Netherland, Roy J. Geraci Jan 2021

The Dutch Atlantic And American Life: Beginnings Of America In Colonial New Netherland, Roy J. Geraci

Theses and Dissertations

The Dutch colony of New Netherland was one of the earliest attempts at a non-indigenous life on the east coast of North America. That colony, along with the United Provinces of the Netherlands and Dutch Atlantic as a whole, played crucial roles in the development of what would become the United States. This thesis project examines the significance New Netherland held in American history as well as explores topics which allow for new and inclusive narratives of that history to reach further exploration. Similarly to how individuals from various cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds all come to exist amongst one another …

An Application Of The Sleuth Model: Future Urbanization Of Davidson County, Tennessee, Caitlyn J. Linehan Jan 2021

An Application Of The Sleuth Model: Future Urbanization Of Davidson County, Tennessee, Caitlyn J. Linehan

Theses and Dissertations

As the urban population is expected to grow in the coming decades, there is pressure on urban areas to expand to accommodate this growth. Often times, these expansions are not sustainable, they consume valuable lands and cause significant environmental, social, and economic burdens, a theory which is known as urban sprawl. Therefore it is often imperative to model areas more likely to urbanize in order for cities to plan for their expansion in the most sustainable way possible. Nashville, Tennessee located within Davidson County is an area that has been experiencing a significant period of urban growth. The objective of …

Emergence Of The Connectivist Leadership Paradigm: A Grounded Theory Study In The Asia Region, Frederique Covington Corbett Jan 2021

Emergence Of The Connectivist Leadership Paradigm: A Grounded Theory Study In The Asia Region, Frederique Covington Corbett

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative, grounded theory study focused on the exploration of leadership arising within the Asia region. While enduring leadership qualities like strength, humility, resolve, and trust have been foundational in leadership practice globally, scholars have demonstrated that leadership does not exist in absolute terms; it is shaped by the values of local culture, which set expectations for leadership behaviors. This study explored the conceptualization of a more collective and connected form of leadership in the context of a region leading the world with highly networked digital social practices. The question the study explored was, if, and to what extent, leaders …

The Impact Of A Management Company’S Scale On Hotel Market Value, Gil Keinan Jan 2021

The Impact Of A Management Company’S Scale On Hotel Market Value, Gil Keinan

Theses and Dissertations

The choice of management structure is growing in importance for hotel owners. Most owners’ investment theses are based on an attractive acquisition basis, focusing on net cash flow and the sales exit. Depending on the market, transaction price may be influenced by asset level performance which is highly influenced by daily revenue and expense decisions. Hotel brands quantify their value via measures that include market share and loyalty of a customer base. While much research has been conducted on the impact of brands on market value, the influence of hotel management on resale value has not been well investigated. This …
