American Public Diplomacy And Propaganda Efforts To Change “Hearts And Minds” In A Soviet Satellite State (Bulgaria) During The Cold War, 1945-1991, Kristian Kafozov
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates and demonstrates the nature and impact of public diplomacy and propaganda efforts employed by the United States of America across Eastern Europe throughout the Cold War, focusing on the People’s Republic of Bulgaria as a case study. Bulgaria's unique position as a steadfast ally of the Soviet Union underpinned by a deep-rooted Russian-Bulgarian “special relationship” (based on shared cultural, religious, and political ties forged over the course of a century), makes it an especially compelling subject for understanding the effectiveness of American initiatives in penetrating even the most loyal Soviet satellite states during the Cold War. This …

Today’s world is highly digitized and requires digital access and literacy for educational, professional, and personal success. Students from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds, such as English Language Learners and those from households experiencing low-income, often face additional challenges accessing digital devices and high-speed Internet at home. Researchers have yet to fully examine how digital access relates to reading achievement among students in the U.S. K-12 public school system. The current study used correlational secondary data analysis to examine relationships among home access to digital devices and high-speed Internet and student reading achievement outcomes. In addition, the association between digital home access …
Humans Are Dust, Chelsea Nanfelt Rowe
Humans Are Dust, Chelsea Nanfelt Rowe
Theses and Dissertations
I probe how objects act as intermediaries between people. These explorations reflect on the delicate navigation that happens when we intertwine our lives with others. My curiosities lie in the fuzzy aura of human life that encircles materials. Do our materials possess life or do we imbue and inject the materials in our world with personalities reflective of ourselves? My motivation for this project is to highlight the stories infused in and witnessed by things we surround ourselves with and use daily.

Housing For Transgender And Gender Expansive People In The U.S. South, Aaron M. Kemmerer
Theses and Dissertations
Housing is a prominent issue for transgender and gender expansive (TGE) people around the world. There is a dearth of research about TGE people experiencing homelessness (TGE PEH) in the U.S. South. This dissertation aims to amplify the voices of TGE Southerners around the social concerns of housing and homelessness – this work also disrupts gendered and racialized narratives about housing injustice, exposing the salience of intersectional discrimination and cisgenderism in housing outcomes for TGE people. Using narrative and visual methods, this dissertation re-presents stories and recommendations from in-depth interview data collected from a small qualitative sample of Southern TGE …

From Victorian Doubt To American Deconstruction: Exploring Faith Crises Across Time And Geography, Bailey Anne Melton
From Victorian Doubt To American Deconstruction: Exploring Faith Crises Across Time And Geography, Bailey Anne Melton
Theses and Dissertations
This research consists of a comparative analysis of faith crises in two distinct historical periods: the Victorian era (1830s-1914) and modern America. Through examining the Victorian crisis of faith and the contemporary American deconstruction movement within Protestant Evangelicalism, this study explores the common themes, diverse responses, and enduring relevance of faith doubt within Christianity. The Victorian crisis emerged amidst scientific advancements, theological debates, and shifting societal norms, prompting intellectuals to grapple with doubts about traditional Christian beliefs. Prominent figures publicly challenged religious orthodoxy, while evolving scientific theories, particularly evolution, further fueled skepticism. In contrast, the American crisis of Evangelicalism is …

Sacred Screens: Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism And Islam In Popular Culture, Arianna A. Poveda
Theses and Dissertations
Popular media content creators have routinely drawn from religious concepts when seeking inspiration for new material. Developers in the West have traditionally relied heavily on Christian themes to supply new ideas. Now, more artists have begun to look towards Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Shinto religions for inspiration when conceiving many of the storylines we find in mainstream entertainment today. This thesis will study key examples of film, video game, literary, and television media to show how these artists weave their religiously inspired themes into their respective platforms. In using the rich stories and traditions to develop more in-depth landscapes and …

The study focused only on F-1 visa international students’ perceptions and utilized the marginality and mattering theory (MMT) (Schlossberg, 1989) as a theoretical framework. The social constructivism paradigm was utilized to explain how international students construct their knowledge and perceptions of social engagement with American peers, …

Illustrating The Fantastic: Cross-Writing Illustrations In British Children’S Literature Of The Golden Age, Stephanie Montalti
Illustrating The Fantastic: Cross-Writing Illustrations In British Children’S Literature Of The Golden Age, Stephanie Montalti
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that British children’s literature of the Golden Age addresses children and adults through their illustrations. It considers why the nineteenth century experienced a proliferation in fantasy and illustration, as well as why Golden Age children’s texts appeal to mixed-age audiences. Through an application of the term “cross-writing,” I argue that the Golden Age of children’s literature did not think of audiences in a binary manner, as some children’s literature scholars tend to assert. Instead, they used the dual mode of textual and visual narration to complicate the boundaries between childhood and adulthood. I also offer an original …

The resulting research combines two outcomes: a print-based narrative and a transformative garment. Print media is used to address the lack of Hijabi representation in Western comics while showcasing the character’s ability to combat discrimination. Derived from the comic format, …

Theses and Dissertations
Palestinians, whether living under occupation or—like myself—in the diaspora, experience a complex journey of displacement and dispossession stemming from the Nakba of 1948. This reality shapes our collective identity, rooted in our connection to our homeland.
Zaytouna explores an under-researched topic: the relationship between the olive tree and uprooted Palestinians. It reveals a rich tapestry of narratives that encompass the quintessential and everlasting relationship between a land and its people. The resulting interactive archival installation consists of two parts: audio recordings from Palestinians in the diaspora, which capture their memories and voices; and visuals, which represent the storytellers’ places of …
