A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson Dec 1979

A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation is a descriptive study of formative research in four arts enrichment activities developed for the elementary classroom. The appendix contains the essential parts of this description. The rationale for developing enrichment activities for the elementary classroom is related to the lack of background and confidence many elementary educators have for the arts in education. The traditional practice leads educators to exclude arts enrichment activities from their programs.

The formative research in this study is based on four enrichment units used by teacher raters who were trained through in-service sessions. They taught the enrichment activities to eighty elementary students. …

Representative Mormon Short Stories 1890 To 1940: Evolution Of Sentimentalism Toward Realism, Alice Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Previously, no one has analyzed the short stories of Mormon periodicals from their inception in the late nineteenth century until 1940. The body of this study attempts to do so and has two main aims.

First, it evaluates the literary development of largely sentimental stories written for Mormon youth. Sentimentality in fiction was an extreme form of romanticism which flourished in America throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. As other forms of realistic writing became more acceptable in the nation, Mormon writers gradually accommodated their literary styles to conform with national trends. A Question Of Influence: William Cowper Brann And Henry Louis Mencken, Dale Owen Bishop

Theses and Dissertations

A major critic of H. L. Mencken and a co-worker of his on the Baltimore Sun have both theorized that Mencken was influenced by a little-remembered Texas iconoclast who was assassinated in 1898, William Cowper Brann. Investigation revealed that Brann and Mencken agreed on many topics such as Prohibition, politics and religion among others. Mencken's early style compares well with Brann's, and they shared many techniques and preferences for particular words standard in the debunker's vocabulary.
