Discipline That Builds Student Self-Discipline, Lory O'Brien
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of a discipline method that builds student self-discipline in the interaction of high school teachers and their students using an action research design. Implementing a discipline system that builds student self-discipline means increasing the effectiveness of teacher management of disruptive students and decreasing the number of disciplinary referrals that are sent to school administrators.
A strategy for training seventeen volunteer teachers in a new disciplinary technique was planned, implemented and evaluated. The teachers involved in the study participated in three workshop sessions designed to teach them a discipline strategy that …

Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the goals and curricula of two supplementary Hebrew high schools and questions whether they changed their focus after the release of the 1990 Council of Jewish Federations' National Jewish Population Survey, which cited a 52% rate of intermarriage since 1985. The Geography Of Polynesians In Utah, Adam M. Frazier
The Geography Of Polynesians In Utah, Adam M. Frazier
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the unique history and geography of Polynesians within Utah. In particular, the historic and current migrations of Hawaiians, Samoans, and Tongans to Utah are examined, and the 1980 and 1990 distributions of Polynesians are mapped and analyzed at three scales: in the United States by state, in Utah by county, and in Salt Lake City by census tract.
Historically, Polynesia's relationship with Utah has been religious, specifically of conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints followed by migration to Utah. Today, however, things are changing. Nevertheless, Polynesians continue to migrate to Utah primarily for …

A Correlational Study Of Teachers' Attitudes Towards The Computer And The Use Of Computer-Assisted Instruction In The Classroom, Lynn Karen Lore
Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to examine the relationship between the attitude of the classroom teacher towards computers and the utilization of Computer Assisted Instruction (CAl) in the classroom instructions. The teachers were from three public schools and one private school in urban and rural districts of southern New Jersey.
The teachers completed a Computer Attitude Survey (CAS), and a Computer Assisted Instruction Survey (CAIS). The Faculty Writing Seminars As A Means Of Faculty Development: Enhancing Faculty Writing, Improving Instructions, And Fostering Collegiality, Joyce A. White
The Faculty Writing Seminars As A Means Of Faculty Development: Enhancing Faculty Writing, Improving Instructions, And Fostering Collegiality, Joyce A. White
Theses and Dissertations
University faculty are charged with three major responsibilities: research, teaching, and service. While universities have developed various strategies to assist faculty in balancing these professional demands, minimal institutional effort has been devoted to nurturing faculty writing, despite the fact that scholarly research productivity is in reality the primary criterion for decisions regarding promotion and tenure. In the last ten years, however, several faculty writing support groups have been instituted to address this aspect of faculty development.
This study examined the University of North Dakota Faculty Writing Seminar to determine the effectiveness of the Seminar as a means of increasing scholarly …

Genetic Analyses Of Captive And Wild Populations Of Hawaiian Geese., Elizabeth H. Rave
Genetic Analyses Of Captive And Wild Populations Of Hawaiian Geese., Elizabeth H. Rave
Theses and Dissertations
Preserving genetic diversity is important for maintaining the evolutionary potential and fitness of endangered species such as the Hawaiian goose (Branta sandvicensis), or nene. I used DNA fingerprinting to assess genetic diversity in captive nene from Hawaii and England and in wild nene from Hawaii. I used pedigrees and DNA fingerprinting to assess the effects of inbreeding on reproductive success in captive nene. I determined (1) differences in mean similarity coefficients between unrelated and related nene within and between captive colonies and the relationship between coancestry and similarity coefficients in captive nene from Hawaii, (2) differences in mean similarity coefficients …

Patterns of seedling demography were studied in undisturbed wet forest at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. In 1983, permanent transects were established at random locations, in which all seedlings $\le$0.5 m in height belonging to all species capable of reaching 10 cm dbh were tagged, identified, mapped, and measured in height. During the following 18 months, a total of 6,403 seedlings belonging to 194 species were tagged. All tagged seedlings were recensused at regular intervals. All but 302 tagged seedlings had died by June 1989, the total mortality rate was 95.3% for a period of 6 years. The mean one-year …
