The purpose of this study is to find out what factors impact teacher autonomy and career satisfaction while also considering how teachers can be effectively supported to improve these areas. Utilizing a narrative inquiry approach, this qualitative study will be held in the Rio Grande Valley and will analyze interviews of both current teachers and teachers who have recently left the profession. Therefore, this study will …
Hispanic Academic Leadership In The Health And Human Services, Gabriela Elizabeth Rangel
Hispanic Academic Leadership In The Health And Human Services, Gabriela Elizabeth Rangel
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, there are 63.7 million Hispanics (U.S. Census Bureau, 2023), making them the largest racial or ethnic minority in the country. National data from 2019 indicates that only 6% of tenured faculty in the U.S. were Hispanic, highlighting a significant underrepresentation of leaders in academia (NCES, 2024). This study employed a phenomenological approach with purposeful sampling, utilizing semi-structured interviews with ten participants who had leadership experience in academia within Health and Human Services (H&HS). The interviews served to explore various aspects, such as what were their aspirations to become leaders, their perceptions of the characteristics and qualities …

Decolonizing The Whitexican: Reclaiming Identity Through Nahuatl And Mesoamerican Motifs, Laia Ivanna Vite Cano
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the intersection of art, linguistics, and ideography through the lens of personal and cultural heritage rooted in the Huasteca region of Central Mexico. Drawing inspiration from familial connections to the pueblos of Huazalingo and Huejutla in Hidalgo, Mexico, the research examines the cultural complexities of bicultural and binational experiences. It is grounded in the theoretical framework of Nepantla, a concept introduced by Gloria Anzaldúa to describe the unseen space of the border life as one of existing between worlds, identities, and cultures. Included and essential to this work is the Coyolxauhqui Imperative, which informs the process of …

A Picture Tells A Thousand Words—, But Ecg Signals Have More To Say, Ashley N. Gomez
Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing adoption of deep learning classification models in the medical domain, a critical challenge remains: achieving high predictive accuracy while maintaining clinical Inter-pretability. This study examines how model architecture, dataset origin, and the use of full versus subset data affect both classification performance and Interpretability in Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal analysis. ResNet18 is evaluated using an open-source ECG Image Dataset, thus a custom dataset derived from digitized ECG images. Post-hoc explainability methods, such as Integrated Gradients, are applied to determine which time steps have the most significant influence on model decisions. The findings demonstrate that model architecture and dataset …

Cyberbullying Victimization And Suicide Behavior: The Roles Of Social Anxiety And Body-Related Comparison Among Young Latina Adults, Monica Elena Ochoa
Theses and Dissertations
Suicide behavior rates have increased over the years in the United States among Latinas and adolescents/young adults. Previous research has identified relationships between various body-related concerns, (e.g., body dissatisfaction, appearance comparison, and body shame) cyberbullying, social anxiety, and suicidal ideation, yet minimal research has examined the relationship of these factors and how they interrelate to explain suicide risk in Latina young adults. This study investigated whether body dissatisfaction, appearance comparison, and body shame had indirect effects on suicide behaviors through the interaction of cyberbullying victimization in 194 Latina college students. The results of this study found that cyberbullying victimization mediated …
Efficient Self-Supervised Representation Learning For Large-Scale Time Series Classification, Kevin Garcia
Efficient Self-Supervised Representation Learning For Large-Scale Time Series Classification, Kevin Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, there has been a significant advancement in designing Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) frameworks for time series data to reduce the dependency on data labels. Among these works, hierarchical contrastive learning-based SSL frameworks, which learn representations by contrasting data embeddings at multiple resolutions, have gained considerable attention. Due to their ability to gather more information, they exhibit better generalization in various downstream tasks. However, when the time series data length is significant long, the computational cost is often significantly higher than that of other SSL frameworks. In this paper, to address this challenge, we propose an efficient way to train hierarchical …
Interpretable Alignment Of Textual Weather Reports With Local Sensor Time Series For Extreme Weather Event Visualization, Juan Luis Garza
Interpretable Alignment Of Textual Weather Reports With Local Sensor Time Series For Extreme Weather Event Visualization, Juan Luis Garza
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an automated and interpretable pipeline that links natural-language weather narratives with local meteorological sensor time series. Using large language models, NOAA-style event reports are transformed into structured records capturing event type, timing, descriptive context, and uncertainty. Each extracted event is aligned with harmonized temperature, precipitation, and wind measurements from nearby weather stations, enabling systematic comparisons between narrative evidence and observed atmospheric conditions.
Across roughly fifty stations and more than two thousand events, the analyses show that discrepancies between narrative descriptions and sensor behavior arise primarily from spatial separation rather than from temporal offsets, sensor preprocessing artifacts, or …

Fractals, Reachability, And Computation In Models Of Dna Self-Assembly And Chemical Reaction Networks, Ryan Arlie Knobel
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis serves as the bridge between results compiled across varying models of tile self-assembly, molecular computation, and game complexity. As such, this thesis is broken into three chapters. In the first part, we show how to generate any Discrete Self-Similar Fractal (DSSF) with a feasible generator in the seeded Tile Assembly model, a model limited to single tile attachments and pairwise state transitions. In the next part, we study models of molecular computation, where we consider the problem of reachability in Chemical Reaction Networks and similar model extensions. The final part is a game-complexity analysis of Celtic! and k-ago, …
Ai-Driven Electromagnetic Design And Performance Prediction Of Microstrip Antennas, Eduardo Javier Vazquez
Ai-Driven Electromagnetic Design And Performance Prediction Of Microstrip Antennas, Eduardo Javier Vazquez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the application of Deep Learning to automate and accelerate microstrip antenna inverse design. The initial investigation was to predict microstrip antenna performance from its geometry parametric input, and found out that forward prediction with adopted geometric representation results in ill-posed scenario, high ambiguity and unstable mapping. The study later mostly focuses on the inverse prediction by machine learning from S11 parameter input to predict antenna patch geometry parameters instead.
A dataset of 5,000 ANSYS HFSS simulated antennas (later filtered to 4,136 valid samples) was generated using cubic spine -described geometry profiles. Multiple neural architectures were adopted for …
Boundary-Layer Mechanisms In Flow Over Triangular Porous-Textured Flat Plates: A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study, Luis Angel Alvarez
Boundary-Layer Mechanisms In Flow Over Triangular Porous-Textured Flat Plates: A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study, Luis Angel Alvarez
Theses and Dissertations
Growing demand for energy-efficient vehicles drives research into flow control strategies that mitigate aerodynamic drag. Active devices such as morphing flaps or plasma actuators offer real-time authority but require external power. Passive concepts, including riblets, tubercles, porous coatings, and miniature vortex generators, reshape the boundary layer without additional energy input. We propose an integrated passive solution called Triangular Porous Texturing (TPT). TPT combines the two mechanisms: a periodic array of triangular prisms that generate controlled streamwise vortices, and an embedded porous matrix that locally adjusts pressure gradients near the wall. Acting synergistically, these features attenuate near-wall turbulence, redistribute momentum, and …

Seagrass Preference Among Pinfish In The Lower Laguna Madre, Nathaniel Garza
Theses and Dissertations
Pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) is a common estuarine fish species found from Massachusetts to the Yucatan, Mexico. As juveniles, pinfish spend a significant portion of their life in coastal seagrasses which provide both shelter from predators and food. Along the Texas coast, there are three major species of seagrass- turtle grass (Thalassia testudinum), manatee grass (Syringodium filiforme) and shoal grass (Halodule wrightii) that differ in structural complexity. The goal of this study was to determine if pinfish associate more with one seagrass species than the others. A year-long field study was completed using twelve sample sites in the Lower Laguna Madre, …

Interactive Effects Of Nutrient Loading And Hyposalinityon The Physiological Responses Of The Red Macroalga Gracilaria Tikvahiae, Donavuan Vincent Salazar
Theses and Dissertations
Coastal macroalgae face anthropogenic stressors such as nutrient enrichment from nitrogen fertilizers and reduced salinity linked to flooding. The physiological impacts of these combined stressors remain unclear. This study examined interactive effects of nitrogen loading and hyposalinity on Gracilaria tikvahiae through a 9‑day laboratory experiment. Samples experienced declining salinity (35–0 ppt) with nitrate or ammonia enrichment (120 µmol/L). Measurements included primary production, respiration, biomass, nitrate uptake, and chlorophyll‑a. Hyposalinity significantly reduced physiological performance, with gross primary production declining over 100%, chlorophyll‑a content 25–45% lower, biomass loss, and reduced nitrogen uptake. Nitrogen enrichment failed to mitigate the adverse impacts under hyposaline …
Probing Prebiotic Rna Oligonucleotide Polymerization On A Mg-Fes Catalyst Using Microfluidics, Gabriella Garza
Probing Prebiotic Rna Oligonucleotide Polymerization On A Mg-Fes Catalyst Using Microfluidics, Gabriella Garza
Theses and Dissertations
Non-enzymatic polymerization under aqueous conditions has long been viewed as unfavorable, due to product (H2O) inhibition in abiotic settings (Damer & Deamer, 2015); despite its efficiency in biology through ATP monomer activation. Geochemically sustained pH gradients may provide free energy for condensation of organic monomers (Martin & Russell, 2003). Here, we investigated a biologically analogous non-enzymatic mechanism for RNA oligomerization, by probing the catalytic properties of a Mg-rich FeS mineral under aqueous conditions. FeS minerals promote a diverse prebiotic reaction (Wächtershäuser, 1988) and would have precipitated at Hadean submarine hydrothermal systems (Sojo et al., 2016). Natural pH and redox gradients …

Applicability Of Cementochronology To Estimate Season-Of-Death In Humans: Insights From Modern Documented Collections, Olga Ibarra-Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
Dental cementum is characterized by lifelong deposition of alternating opaque annuli in fall/winter and translucent bands in spring/summer. This study aims to test the applicability of cementochronology to estimate season-of-death, by observing the properties of the last layer, with direct implications for forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology. The sample includes canine teeth from 146 adults (84 males, 62 females), age-at-death ranging from 20-97 years (mean=61.7 years, SD=18.6 years), from two contemporary skeletal collections. Of these individuals, 78 (53.4%) died in spring/summer and 68 (46.6%) died in fall/winter. Overall accuracy was low at 64.4% (94/146). Accuracy was higher for spring/summer deaths 100.0% …
Feature Extraction From Railroad Bearing Onboard Vibration Sensors Using Machine Learning Models, Diego Cantu
Feature Extraction From Railroad Bearing Onboard Vibration Sensors Using Machine Learning Models, Diego Cantu
Theses and Dissertations
The University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) has developed an algorithm capable of identifying defective railroad bearings, determining damaged component(s) within, and quantifying severity of the defects. The defect-detection algorithm requires the operating speed as an input, which is not readily available in field operation of onboard sensors. Therefore, onboard sensors deployed in rail revenue service must rely on Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to obtain speed, which can be power-intensive and susceptible to signal interference. This study covers the development of a vibration-based model that extracts operating speed from wireless sensor data to enable fully autonomous onboard diagnostics. Signal …
Comparative Assessment Of Lower Limb Neuromusculoskeletal Activation And Joint Kinematics In Normal And Impaired Gait, Jack Ryan Schule
Comparative Assessment Of Lower Limb Neuromusculoskeletal Activation And Joint Kinematics In Normal And Impaired Gait, Jack Ryan Schule
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis evaluates whether accessible and affordable technologies can provide clinically significant, quantifiable gait analysis comparable to traditional marker-based motion capture systems. Modern high-end systems offer excellent accuracy but remain financially and logistically inaccessible to many clinicians and researchers. To address this gap, a framework was developed using markerless pose estimation using the model, MediaPipe, inertial measurement units (IMUs) processed through an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), and surface electromyography (sEMG) to measure joint kinematics and neuromuscular activity during gait. An experiment was performed where data was collected from participants with both normal gait and pathologies including: Osgood–Schlatter disease, Plica Band …

Control Strategy, Multi-Objective Optimization, And Economic Viability For Utility-Scale Wind-Solar-Based Hybrid Power Plant, Shree Om Bade
Theses and Dissertations
Hybrid Power Plants (HPP) that combine wind power plants (WPP), solar power plants (SPP), and battery energy storage systems (BESS) have recently emerged to provide dispatchable renewable electricity, improve the stability of the power grid, maximize use of infrastructure assets, and minimize carbon releases. Nevertheless, regardless of their technical potential, the large-scale application of HPP still encounters many barriers, such as operational complexity, inadequate sizing, and financial viability. To mitigate these issues, this study incorporates three research questions. First, this study introduces a four-layer hierarchical control architecture for coordinating WPP, SPP, and BESS to ensure dispatchable power. Second, a multi-objective …

This study evaluates the EPA Storm Water Management Model (EPA-SWMM) using MRMS RadarOnly Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) 1-hour Accumulation as the primary rainfall input for a watershed in Little Rock, Arkansas. The region was selected due to its urban character and the limited availability of radar-based hydrologic studies in Arkansas. 21 storms were analyzed from 2022-2025: 10 in Winter, 7 in Spring, and 4 in Summer. Storms were selected due to their effect on flow. The model was calibrated using February …
Long-Term Sedimentation Rates And Patterns Of Alluvial Ridge Basins (Esteros) Of The Rio Grande Delta (Tx, United States Of America), Kynan Joseph Rutan
Long-Term Sedimentation Rates And Patterns Of Alluvial Ridge Basins (Esteros) Of The Rio Grande Delta (Tx, United States Of America), Kynan Joseph Rutan
Theses and Dissertations
Little is known about the century-scale sedimentation rates and patterns of Alluvial Ridge basins within river deltas, especially in the Rio Grande Delta (RGD). To better constrain this, 22 cores were collected in the Bahia Grande Complex (BGC) and analyzed for grain size, organic content, age dates, and elemental composition.
Results show that grain size and sedimentation rates decrease from an artificial inlet to the basin interior, with elevated sedimentation in the south. Also, human activities, such as the construction of the Brownsville shipping channel in the 1930s, altered sedimentation dynamics in the basin by blocking natural inlets and leading …

The Relationship Between Perceived Transactional Distance, Cultural Values, And Online Instruction Among Higher Education Students: A Quantitative Analysis, Judith Kay Guetzow
Theses and Dissertations
This quantitative survey research study examines potential correlations and influences on the learning of students enrolled in online classes at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). The study specifically investigates whether transactional distance (TD) as conceptualized in Michael G. Moore’s Transactional Distance Theory (TDT), and cultural values such as power distance (PD), uncertainty avoidance (UA), and collectivism (CO) as defined in Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory, are associated with, and impact the learning experiences of online students. The analysis primarily centers on students’ perceived transactional distance and their self-reported cultural orientations.

Testing Microscopic Approaches For Cementochronology In The 21st Century Identified Skeletal Collection, Portugal, Amando Luis Montalvo Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Age-at-death estimation is a key component to the creation of a biological profile in forensic anthropology. Acellular extrinsic fiber cementum annulations have been shown to correlate with chronological age. Cementochronology examines this correlation through the sum of the alternating translucent bands and opaque annuli, and the age of eruption of a tooth. While several microscopy techniques have been used, there is no consensus on the most optimal. This study will assess the reliability, precision and accuracy of three microscopy techniques: Brightfield (BF), Phase Contrast (PC) and Differential Interference Contrast (DIC). PC was the most reliable (rTEM= 10.4%), the most precise …
Towards Trustworthy Federated Learning, Alina Basharat
Towards Trustworthy Federated Learning, Alina Basharat
Theses and Dissertations
Federated learning is a collaborative training model in which multiple clients optimize aglobal model by transmitting updates to a coordinating server while keeping raw data on-device, thereby reducing direct data exposure and enabling iterative global improvement. However, the iterative communication process is vulnerable to malicious attackers that either deliberately destroy the model or curious to infer raw data. Moreover, learning from multiple agents may result in unfair results. To enhance trustworthiness within this setting, we employ two-sided norm-based screening (TNBS) that removes both abnormally large and abnormally small updates, pair it with a q-fair objective to emphasize high-loss (disadvantaged) clients, …
Optimizing Pv Solar Array Design By Analysis Of The Industrial And Training Assessment Center (Itac) Database, Angel Samuel Fernandez
Optimizing Pv Solar Array Design By Analysis Of The Industrial And Training Assessment Center (Itac) Database, Angel Samuel Fernandez
Theses and Dissertations
Since 2017, the Industrial Training and Assessment Center (ITAC) at UTRGV has included photovoltaic (PV) system evaluations in its industrial energy assessments. A review of these reports showed inconsistencies in PV system design, including variations in sizing methods, performance assumptions, and application of NEC requirements. To address these issues, this thesis develops a standardized and NEC-compliant methodology for designing PV systems, incorporating demand-based sizing, solar-geometry principles, and electrical calculations guided by NEC Articles 690 and 705.
This thesis focuses on demand-based PV system sizing and incorporates NEC-guided electrical design to ensure technical compliance and safety. System performance is evaluated using …
The Unilateral Neuromuscular Effects Of Cross Education Eccentric-Focused Isokinetic Strength Training With Blood Flow Restriction In Sedentary And Recreationally Active Males, Bryan Mixumi
Theses and Dissertations
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if BFR unilateral training protocols can elicit the same or greater cross-education effect as observed with HIGH protocols.
RESULTS: Significant time main effects and trained vs. untrained interactions revealed both training groups improved in isometric and isokinetic strength, work and power across limbs (P < 0.05). EMG analyses showed significant increases in vastus lateralis activation, with limb-specific neural adaptations but no group differences (P < 0.05) suggesting potential cross-education influence in the lower musculature.
CONCLUSION: With lower workloads, the BFR training protocols produced improvements in isometrics and isokinetic strength, work, power, and EMG that were comparable to those of the HIGH group across the trained and untrained limbs. The magnitude and limb-specific patterns varied across isometric, isokinetic, and EMG variables, but …
Modern Water And Sediment Transport Patterns In Alluvial Ridge Basins Of The Rio Grande Delta, South Texas, Usa, Waqid Nabi
Theses and Dissertations
Alluvial ridge (AR) basins are shallow, marine-influenced depressions within river deltas, yet their flow and sediment dynamics remain poorly understood. This study examines hydrodynamics and sediment transport patterns in the Bahia Grande Complex, which are AR basins of the Rio Grande Delta, using tilt current meters, water-level and turbidity loggers, and suspended and bed-sediment sampling. The AR basins function as wind-dominated, microtidal environments, where pre-existing basin geometry and hydrodynamic forcings control water flow and sediment distribution patterns. Seasonal wind patterns and storms modulate water levels and flow connectivity. Substrate patterns reflect frequent resuspension in the shallow northern basin, maintaining coarse …

An Evaluation Of Noncontingent Reinforcement And Additional Treatment Components In The Treatment Of Stereotypic Behavior, Stephanie Nicole Brand
An Evaluation Of Noncontingent Reinforcement And Additional Treatment Components In The Treatment Of Stereotypic Behavior, Stephanie Nicole Brand
Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with autism often engage in stereotypic behavior that competes with learning and social skills. Behavior analytic treatment may be implemented to reduce stereotypy. Noncontingent reinforcement (NCR) is one treatment that is often effective to reduce stereotypy. However, literature suggests that the use of NCR is contraindicated in some circumstances, as it may compete with the acquisition of new skills or may increase subsequent persistence of stereotypy. This research was designed to expand our knowledge of potential limitations of NCR when combined with other treatments. Study one examined persistence of stereotypy following treatment with NCR with and without response blocking. …

Quantum Entanglement As A Resource For Coordinating Navigation, Aamir Ahmad
Theses and Dissertations
John Clauser, Michael Horne, Abner Shimony, and Richard Holt (CHSH) originally formulated the CHSH game as an experiment to establish entanglement as a quantum mechanical phenomenon that could not be predicted by classical theories. I will apply the quantum strategy used in the CHSH game to demonstrate that it also establishes a structure that employs entanglement as a resource to enable coordination without communication in the context of navigation.
Training Aba Service Providers To Use Phonemic Transcription: A Comparison Of Two Alphabets, Kristin Marie Albert
Training Aba Service Providers To Use Phonemic Transcription: A Comparison Of Two Alphabets, Kristin Marie Albert
Theses and Dissertations
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) service providers regularly develop speech and shape articulation when working with minimally vocal children with autism. However, these providers usually have not received training in related subject areas as part of their certification coursework. This results in a gap between their scopes of competence and practice. The present study aimed to lessen this gap by training ABA service providers to take phonemic transcription. The author, in consultation with a speech-language pathologist, developed and implemented a computer-based programmed instruction training package. Studies 1 and 2 employed a concurrent multiple-probe design with an embedded adapted alternating treatments design …
