Investigating The Effects Of Multiple Concussions On Neuropsychological Performance, Michaela S. Patoilo Aug 2024

Investigating The Effects Of Multiple Concussions On Neuropsychological Performance, Michaela S. Patoilo

Theses and Dissertations

It has been well-established in the literature that a history of concussion makes individuals more susceptible to sustaining subsequent concussions. However, there is little neuropsychological evidence of how sustaining multiple lifetime concussions affects cognitive functioning in the general adult population. It is known from previous traumatic brain injury and single concussion literature that impairments in cognitive performance across domains often follow the initial injury, and exploratory studies have shown that multiple concussions can have a measurable impact on cognition. However, existing research is often limited by its reliance on archival data and abbreviated neuropsychological batteries. Therefore, the current study aimed …

Using Phylogenomics And Environmental Metabarcoding To Understand The Distribution And Evolutionary Histories Of Amoebae, Robert E. Jones Aug 2024

Using Phylogenomics And Environmental Metabarcoding To Understand The Distribution And Evolutionary Histories Of Amoebae, Robert E. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Protists are defined as eukaryotic organisms that are not animals, land plants, or fungi and make up the vast majority of eukaryotic diversity. Unfortunately, they are often overlooked and under sampled. Some rationales behind this are that they are often microscopic, most rarely the cause of human disease, and are often difficult to get into culture. Molecular phylogenetics has revolutionized our understanding of the evolutionary history of eukaryotes and without a clear picture of protist evolution our understanding would be severely hindered. Phylofisher is an easy-to-use phylogenomic software package, with an accompanying database and various utilities, intended for deep phylogenomic …

Effects Of Cascading Optical Processes On Quantification Of Sample Scattering Extinction, Intensity, And Depolarization, Samadhi Nisansala Nawalage

Theses and Dissertations

Complex samples containing nanoscale or larger materials exhibit light scattering, a universal property of matter. However, the influence of scattering-induced cascading optical processes on quantifying sample scattering intensity and depolarization has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study uses polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) as a model analyte for systematic experimental and computational investigation. It aims to elucidate the effects of cascading optical processes on scattering cross-section, molar coefficients, depolarization, and intensities. A theoretical model is introduced to show how the Beer-Lambert law is complicated by forward-scattered light interference in UV-Vis measurements. The dependence of scattering intensity on concentration and particle size is …

Contention Resolution With Collision Cost, Umesh Chandra Biswas Aug 2024

Contention Resolution With Collision Cost, Umesh Chandra Biswas

Theses and Dissertations

Contention resolution coordinates access to a shared communication channel divided into synchronized slots. For any fixed slot, a packet can be sent, leading to three outcomes: empty (no packet sent), successful (one packet sent), or collision (multiple packets sent). Each slot provides ternary feedback: empty, successful, or collision. Much of the prior work has mainly focused on optimizing the makespan, the number of slots needed for all packets to succeed. However, in many modern systems, collisions also incur time costs, which existing algorithms do not address. In this thesis, we design and analyze a randomized contention-resolution algorithm, Collision-Evasion Backoff, that …

Unraveling Catalytic Mysteries: Insights Revealed By Density Functional Theory, Tri Nghia Le Aug 2024

Unraveling Catalytic Mysteries: Insights Revealed By Density Functional Theory, Tri Nghia Le

Theses and Dissertations

Density functional theory (DFT), a powerful toolbox, can unveil chemical transformations in detail. This dissertation focuses on exploring catalytic puzzles, deciphering experimental results, and occasionally, reevaluating conventional concepts. In the first problem, a combination of DFT and kinetic studies uncovers the hidden role of borane in directed borylation reactions catalyzed by iridium complex. Borane, initially considered a side product, is revealed to be an autocatalyst. Chiral catalysts are pivotal for achieving asymmetric molecular construction. However, when the chirality center in the catalyst changes with each turnover, what impact does this have? In our second investigation, we delved into a thorough …

Alight, The Dead Of Night: Ascertaining The Collection And Use Of Nighttime Site Inventory In Landscape Architecture Professional Practice, Jacob Zachary Felkins Aug 2024

Alight, The Dead Of Night: Ascertaining The Collection And Use Of Nighttime Site Inventory In Landscape Architecture Professional Practice, Jacob Zachary Felkins

Theses and Dissertations

In landscape architecture, site inventory is a common precursor and perpetual informant of site design, toolkit development, and best management practices. Within inventory-specific texts, inventory is primarily geared, collected, and applied toward the daytime, and thusly, one might consider the bulk of inventory to be “daytime inventory” which pays greater heed to a diurnal humanity and lesser heed to the nocturnal world. With a greater attention to nighttime site conditions, we explored “nighttime inventory” through a series of primary considerations - nighttime lighting, light pollution, site ecology, and the night sky – along with several secondary considerations. We then surveyed …

Creating A Chronology Of Claiborne (22ha501): Revisiting And Revising Radiocarbon Assays Of A Poverty Point Site, Olivia Catherine Baumgartel

Theses and Dissertations

The Claiborne site in Hancock County, Mississippi has been considered part of a culture within Poverty Point’s control since it’s discovery in the 1950’s. In this study, I sampled and ran new five new radiocarbon dates from the collections at Mississippi State University. I then created a chronometric hygiene scale, ranked the new and current dates, removed dates from models that did not have the criteria needed to continue. This thesis created a new chronology for the site, placing it within the timeline of Poverty Point but also related it to the Archaic shell mounds in Southeastern North America.

Here I Am, Like I Am: Disability In Twentieth-Century Southern Literature, Rachel M. Bell Aug 2024

Here I Am, Like I Am: Disability In Twentieth-Century Southern Literature, Rachel M. Bell

Theses and Dissertations

The depiction of people with disabilities in American literature has varied considerably throughout the twentieth century. In the south in particular, disabled individuals have been portrayed as violent, licentious, and deceitful. This thesis examines three hallmarks of American southern literature—Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, William Faulkner’s Sanctuary, and the short stories of Flannery O’Connor—to demonstrate the anxiety of that era surrounding disability, as well as how disability works in tandem with race and class. The fixation of these works on the sexual immorality of disabled men reflects the fascination with eugenics in the mid-twentieth century, as do their animalistic …

A Social Ecology Model For Social Determinants Of Health As Psychosis Risk Factors, Katie Beck-Felts

Theses and Dissertations

Social determinants of health (SDOHs) significantly impact psychosis risk beyond heritability. However, there is a need for an organizing framework to observe how these diverse elements concurrently predict psychosis risk. This study examines SDOHs as psychosis risk factors using a four-level model, aligned with Bronfenbrenner's social ecology theory. The study aims to assess the proposed model’s ability to predict psychosis risk. Specifically, it is hypothesized that each socioecological level of the model would predict psychosis risk with more proximal SDOHs (e.g., individual level vs community) exhibiting stronger predictive power, aligning with Social Ecology theory. College students (N = 210) completed …

Exploring The Role Of Rb1 In Cellular Differentiation Using Patient-Derived Stem Cells, Ambily Vincent Aug 2024

Exploring The Role Of Rb1 In Cellular Differentiation Using Patient-Derived Stem Cells, Ambily Vincent

Theses and Dissertations

The Retinoblastoma (RB1) gene, predominantly recognized as a tumour suppressor, plays a crucial role in early growth and development. Mice lacking the retinoblastoma gene do not survive and exhibit defects in the differentiation of various tissues, underscoring its involvement in cellular differentiation. This suggests that the functions of the RB1 gene extend beyond its role as a tumour suppressor, encompassing cell cycle regulation, maintenance of genomic stability, cellular senescence, and cellular differentiation.

While the tumour suppressor function of the RB1 has been extensively studied, its role in cellular differentiation remains incompletely understood. Existing literature, primarily based on animal models, has …
