Tumbleweeds: Ecology And Abscission, Donald A. Becker
Theses and Dissertations
A study of tumbleweeds in North Dakota, conducted from June, 1964 to October, 1968, was concentrated on two common species: Psoralea arqophvlla Pursh (silver leaf psoralea) and Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrader (kochia). The objectives were to determine the internal or external factors regulating stem abscission, and to describe the niche of each species through the ecological life history approach. Anatomical and histochemical studies were conducted on the basal portions of stems at various stages of plant maturity. Ecological life history aspects of silver leaf psoralea were studied both in the field and under controlled environmental conditions, while those of kochia …

An annual seasonal displacement was exhibited, with Ferruginous Hawks being present in the study area only during the nesting season, which lasted …

Fall And Winter Population Study Of The Macro-Invertebrate Fauna Of Lincoln Beach, Utah Lake, With Notes On Invertebrates In Fish Stomachs., Ralph Buckly Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the inconveniences associated with under ice population studies, most aquatic population studies are made during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Like most lakes little is known about the fall and winter popu-lations of the Utah Lake invertebrates. The purpose of this study is to classify, determine quantitative fall and winter population fluctuations, and obtain life history and ecological information of the macro-invertebrates at . Lincoln Beach, Utah Lake. This lake is the largest, natural occurring body of fresh water in the state and has a high potential for the production of gamefish and water-fowl. As Smart (1960) …

Considerable research on ticks has been done since it was discovered that the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, was a principal vector of Rocky Mountain spotted fevero Additional disease agents of man are also transmitted by D. andersoni. This tick and a closely related species, Dermacentor parumapertus Neuman, occur commonly in Utah. The two species are often closely associated, although D. andersoni is believed to occur in the mountains, whereas D. parumapertus is in the desert valleys. The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
The approach of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 posed several real and imagined threats to the Mormon Kingdom in the Great Basin. The Pacific Railroad ended Mormon geographic isolation and brought economic competition from the States. The railroad also made it possible for miners to get to the gold fields faster and with the heave equipment necessary to make Utah mining profitable. Sensing the political problems and the social and moral evils that would accompany the railroad, the Mormon leaders, in hopes of meeting these problems, counseled to extend their economic goal of self-sufficiency. Through stepped-up cooperation and unity they …
