Reproductive Isolating Mechanisms And Communication In Greater Prairie Chickens (Tympanuchus Cupido) And Sharp-Tailed Grouse (Pedioecetes Phasianellus), Donald W. Sparling Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Sympatric populations of greater prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) and sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianel lus) were studied between 1975 and 1978 in northwestern Minnesota for the pur poses of identifying and determining the strength of reproductive isolating mechanisms between them. Major emphasis was placed on ethological mechanisms but other factors were also examined.

Approximately a fifth of the sharptail’s distribution overlaps half of the prairie chicken’s within North America. Within the zone of sympatry, prairie chicken populations are in small patches and may be liable to hybrid swarming, particularly with changes in land-use practices. The rate cf hybridization is around 1% …

The development process through which the course went, its formative evaluations and summative evaluation are described. The summative evaluation employed the pretest-posttest control group design. Thirty children, ages 7 through 9, were in the evaluation. After the pretest, 15 of the children were taught the 19-lesson course by their parents during a 23-day period. The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On Responses To Opiates And Other Centrally-Acting Pharmacologic Agents, Glenn Stuart Simon Jan 1979

The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On Responses To Opiates And Other Centrally-Acting Pharmacologic Agents, Glenn Stuart Simon

Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes mellitus affects millions of people. Although diabetics can lead relatively normal lives, all treatments for the disease are symptomatic and not curative. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the sensitivity to opiates and other selected centrally-acting drugs in animals is altered by streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. A second objective was to determine which aspect of the diabetic syndrome primarily was responsible for the altered sensitivity. Other experiments were performed in an attempt to elucidate the mechanism whereby this altered sensitivity occurred.

STZ-induced diabetes or dextrose-induced transient hyperglycemia did not have a significant effect on the duration of …
