A Proposed Course Of Study For Prospective Secondary Education Teachers Of The Social Sciences In The Use Of Educational Media And Media Centers, Shelby Strand, Joe Abbott, Paulette Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown that prospective teachers have a very limited knowledge of educational media and media centers, and that little is presently being done to correct this deficiency. The intent of this study was to develop a course of instruction which would give the prospective secondary teacher of the social sciences the knowledge and acquaintanceship necessary to enable him to make intelligent and effective use of educational media and the school media center.
The course was first planned in advance and then actually taught to a group of secondary education majors in the social sciences. A day-to-day account of the …

The Conception Of Nationalism In Elementary School Children Of North Dakota, Robert A. Wheeler
Theses and Dissertations
The major purpose of this study was to determine when children can internalize concepts concerning home, state, and nation.
Educators and psychologists have not in the past worked in harmony as new curricula and methodologies have been developed. It was the intent of this research to provide statistical data and verbal comparisons on selected research questions to determine the effect of children's chronological age on the ability to generalize social studies concepts.
The following research questions were investigated:
1. Do North Dakota elementary students differ from Swiss Children investigated by Piaget in their concept of nation?
2. Do North Dakota …

The Seibold Site on the Missouri Coteau in northwest Stutsman County, North Dakota, contains a late Quaternary lacustrine deposit with a spectaculary preserved and diverse biota; more than 150 species occur, of which the mollusks and fish are figured and discussed in detail in this study. The Dream Mine: A Study In Mormon Folklore, Joe Stanley Graham
The Dream Mine: A Study In Mormon Folklore, Joe Stanley Graham
Theses and Dissertations
In September of 1894, John Hyrum Koyle, Jr., said that he was shown in a dream or vision a large, rich deposit of gold and an underground storehouse of artifacts hidden by people of Ancient America. This dream was the beginning of a mining venture which has never produced anything of value, has been opposed vigorously by both officials of the LDS Church and the State, yet has claimed supporters numbered in the thousands.
The mine has profoundly affected (and continues to affect) the lives of many families who have come into the sphere of its influence. The lore of …

The Application Of An Index To Determine Genetic And Environhental Contributions To Dentofacial Growth In Twins And Siblings, Richard Charles Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
The method of principal components may be used to reduce a large quantity of data for an individual into a single statistic, a growth index, indicative of overall facial growth, and to make a determination of the relative contribution of each variable, as well as the genotype and the environment, to the variation between individuals, When this method is applied to four consecutive years of cephalometric and anthropometric data from each of 95 children, consisting of Caucasian and Negro monozygotic twins, like-sexed dizygotic twins, and their siblings of both sexes, it discloses that:
1. The relative contributions of the variables …

An Early History Of The Community Of Park City, Utah, Oscar F. Jesperson Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Park City, Utah, has been one of the most permanent mining camps in Utah. While constituting the industrial and population center of Summit County, it has contributed over one half billions dollars to the economies of Utah and the nation. This thesis deals with the early years of Park City, 1869-1910. This period saw an influx and combination of several ethnic groups which served to enrich the cultural history of Park City. Religion and social organizations were a major part of the life of this community. The political effect of this mining camp on Summit County and the Territory of …

An Archaeological Survey Of Goshen Valley, Utah County, Central Utah, Leland Gilsen
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a field report on the archaeological sites surveyed by the author in Goshen Valley, Utah County, Utah. The survey has the threefold objectives of: (1) surveying and recording of sites in Goshen Valley; (2) providing information on the material culture of the ancient inhabitants of the valley; and (3) discovering whether there was a dividing line during the Fremont occupation between the Provo and Sevier regions as outlined by Jones (1961), Green (1964), and Ambler (1966).
To this end, seventy-four sites are described along with the related material culture with an analysis of the material culture in …
A Folk History Of The Manti Temple: A Study Of The Folklore And Traditions Connected With The Settlement Of Manti, Utah, And The Building Of The Temple, Barbara Lee Hargis
A Folk History Of The Manti Temple: A Study Of The Folklore And Traditions Connected With The Settlement Of Manti, Utah, And The Building Of The Temple, Barbara Lee Hargis
Theses and Dissertations
For some time I have been collecting folk material of the pioneers of Sanpete County, Utah, and their subsequent building of the Manti Temple. A few of the county's senior citizens witnessed part of the construction in the late 1870's and 1880's and the dedication in 1888 of the Temple. Many more are descendants of men and women who were directly involved in the building of the Temple and in the early work done there after its construction.
The stories that these people tell are significant. A collection of them represents a rich folk history of a religious, pioneering people …

An Archaeological Survey Of West Canyon And Vicinity, Utah County Utah, Edward A. Wheeler Ii
Theses and Dissertations
This section is a statement on the reason behind my conducting archeological excavations in West Canyon. In light of the large collections which had come out of the area, it was deemed important to excavate before any further destruction of sites in the canyon took place in order to establish, if possible, the cultural affiliations of the prehistoric inhabitants of that area. It was felt before excavation began that there was enough evidence already on hand to suggest Fremont culture affiliation, but this was not sufficient to demonstrate the same with confident conclusiveness.
A second goal was to obtain a …
A Design Study In Costume For Projected Dramatic Productions Prescribing A Book Of Mormon Setting Identified Herein As Late Preclassic Mesoamerican Culture, Amanda J. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to design costumes for twelve characters, selected from the Book of Mormon, suitable for projected dramatic productions. Selection of the characters was determined by the following criteria:
(1) Sufficient dramatic potential for projected dramatic productions must be inherent in the period from which characters are drawn.
(2) Characters should represent various levels within their society.
The problem of creating the costume designs presumed an investigation of environmental factors which would influence the clothing styles worn by a typical cross section of Late Preclassic Mesoamerican society. Origins of the American Indian are briefly discussed and …
A Study Of The Cultural And Religious Behavior Of The Navaho Indians Which Caused Animosity, Resistance, Or Indifference To The Religious Teachings Of The Latter-Day Saints, James D. Mathews
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the cultural and religious behavior of the Navaho Indians which caused animosity, resistance, or indifference to the religious teachings of the Latter-day Saints.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for many years, have been in frequent contact with the Navaho Indians. Thousands of Navaho youth have been enrolled in the Indian seminary program of the Church. Hundreds of other students have been involved in the Indian student placement program and the Brigham Young University Indian education program. Furthermore, the Church has contacted much of the population of the …
Rodeo Imagery In Art, Walter Piehl Jr.
Rodeo Imagery In Art, Walter Piehl Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Rodeo is presented not as a by-product of the American Cowboy, but rather an ultimate evolution traceable to the caveman's struggle for survival. This primitive struggle became a -n the Island of Crete. Later it was refined and accepted as the major sporting spectacle of Spanish speaking peoples. From this tradition of highest contest excellence rodeo developed from frontier ranching duties in the Spanish Southwest.
Throughout each of these developmental periods artists seized upon the visual possibilities of this pagentry. Cave artists presented the hunt in a magical way, Minoan artists depicted the bull-leapers grace. Spanish artists, Goya and Picasso, …
