Paternal Programming: The Role Of Seminal Plasma In Pregnancy Hemodynamics And Offspring Growth, Rebecca Michele Swanson
Paternal Programming: The Role Of Seminal Plasma In Pregnancy Hemodynamics And Offspring Growth, Rebecca Michele Swanson
Theses and Dissertations
Seminal plasma is commonly known to serve as a transport medium for sperm as it moves through the female reproductive tract for fertilization, however, more recent evidence demonstrates seminal plasma induces an expansive inflammatory response in the uterus. Murine models have found this inflammatory response is important for clearing pathogens and poor-quality sperm, eliciting the secretion of cytokines, chemokines, and embryokines that aid in embryo attachment and growth, placental angiogenesis, and blunting maternal immunity to the embryo. However, there is minimal research on the impacts of seminal plasma uterine priming in bovine, and more specifically embryo growth, uterine blood flow, …
Effects Of Supplementing Sources Of Zinc On Digestibility Parameters Of Beef Steers, Arminda Spikes James
Effects Of Supplementing Sources Of Zinc On Digestibility Parameters Of Beef Steers, Arminda Spikes James
Theses and Dissertations
Zinc (Zn) has numerous functions and life sustaining processes depend on the presence of Zn within the body. Zinc sulfate is a common form of Zn supplemented in the beef industry. Inorganic sulfate based minerals have been associated with negative rumen effects, mainly, decreased rumen fermentation and protozoa numbers. Our studies concluded no difference in digestibility of three different forms of Zn (zinc glycinate, zinc sulfate, and zinc hydroxychloride). Although overall digestibility did not change, there were specific mineral concentration differences after steers consumed concentrate treatment for 10 days. These differences implied that the mineral fed was consumed and absorbed …
Of Changing Climate And Habitat: Range-Wide Individual Growth And Local Patterns Of Phenology And Landscape Use In A Threatened Pit-Viper, James Helferich
Of Changing Climate And Habitat: Range-Wide Individual Growth And Local Patterns Of Phenology And Landscape Use In A Threatened Pit-Viper, James Helferich
Theses and Dissertations
Over the 21st century, climate change and wetland habitat loss will pose major threats to the Eastern Massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus), a federally threatened and Great Lakes region endemic rattlesnake. I collected capture-recapture data from sites across the range and modeled the effect of climatic variables on growth rate and asymptotic size. I found that high snow residence time was associated with larger asymptotic sizes but slower growth, while high spring precipitation increased growth rate. I then projected future growth and size under different carbon emission scenarios. Given the threat posed by successional encroachment of woody vegetation, I used spatially explicit …
Towards Understanding The Interactions Between Ospreys And Human-Made Structures In The Tennessee River Valley, Natasha Karina Murphy
Towards Understanding The Interactions Between Ospreys And Human-Made Structures In The Tennessee River Valley, Natasha Karina Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
Raptor nests on human-built structures represent a significant source of conflict as they can result in bird mortality, fires, structure damage, service distribution, or power outages when falling nest materials or animals connect with energized conductors. Power companies, such as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), wish to mitigate these conflicts to avoid service disruptions. In this dissertation, I present my work towards understanding and mitigating the interactions between Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) and human-made structures. To achieve this, I explored multiple elements of conflict identification, monitoring, and basic ecology of the target species to better inform conflict mitigation. In Chapter I, …
Evaluating The Greet-Stop-Prompt Intervention In Decreasing Racial Disparities In School Discipline, Alexandra Utley
Evaluating The Greet-Stop-Prompt Intervention In Decreasing Racial Disparities In School Discipline, Alexandra Utley
Theses and Dissertations
Exclusionary discipline practices are often considered to be generally ineffective and inequitable, however, they are one of the more common disciplinary practices used in schools today. Although there are many positive alternatives to school exclusion, there are limited disciplinary practices specifically intended to target discipline with racial equity in mind. The GREET-STOP-PROMPT (GSP) intervention, developed by Cook and colleagues (2018), is one intervention found in the literature explicitly created to reduce racial discipline disparities. Although there is currently limited research evaluating the GSP intervention, the results indicate it to be a potentially promising method of equitably addressing student behavior. The …
Cement Stabilization Of Poorly Graded Sand, Lana Grayson Brown Sisung
Cement Stabilization Of Poorly Graded Sand, Lana Grayson Brown Sisung
Theses and Dissertations
Stabilization of poorly graded sand in full-scale applications is challenging. This thesis evaluated cement-stabilized sand and had two objectives: (1) evaluation of stabilized material using the PM device to quantify engineering properties for future comparison to alterative materials and to investigate the effectiveness of the device with sand and (2) investigation of the merits of alternative application of cement to sand to benchmark against other topically applied materials. The PM device was successfully used to recommend 10% cement for field studies with one sand, successfully allowed data collection in laboratory and field applications, and its potential in sand seems promising …
Effects Of Wet Aging On Water-Soluble Flavor Compounds, Descriptive Flavor, Consumer Acceptability, And Willingness-To-Pay Of Beef Longissimus Lumborum Steaks, Shangshang Wang
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effects of wet aging on water-soluble flavor compounds, descriptive flavor, consumer acceptability, and willingness-to-pay of beef strip steaks. Twenty USDA Select boneless beef loins (NAMP #180) were dorsally divided into four equal portions, which were randomized to receive either 0, 7, 14, or 21 d of wet aging. Short-chained peptide concentration increased from 4.11 mg/g on d 0 to 5.12 mg/g on d 7 (P = 0.011) and subsequently increased to 7.14 mg/g on d 21 (P < 0.001). Cooked beef contained 1.85 mg/g less short-chained peptides than raw beef (P < 0.001). Wet aging for 21 d increased the concentrations of amino acids, which are precursors for the Maillard reaction, including methionine, threonine, cystine, serine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine (P < 0.001). Wet aging decreased the nucleotide concentrations (P ≤ 0.003) and increased hypoxanthine concentration, a compound that imparts bitter flavor (P …

Increased Coding Potential Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1, Victoria Jefferson
Increased Coding Potential Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1, Victoria Jefferson
Theses and Dissertations
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) costs the cattle industry millions of dollars in costs in treatment and loss every year in the United States. A significant pathogen often contributes to BRD is Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), a double stranded DNA virus with the ability to establish latency in the trigeminal ganglia and neurons. Primary infection with BoHV-1 results in immunosuppression that increases the risk of secondary bacterial infection and pneumonia. Because herpesviruses infect their hosts for life and can be reactivated in times of stress, BoHV-1 can present a recurring risk of BRD. The following research aims to expand the knowledge …

Improved Herbicide Selectivity In Tomato By Safening Action Of Benoxacor, 2,4,6-T, Melatonin, And Fenclorim, Tabata Raissa De Oliveira
Theses and Dissertations
Safeners protect crops by enhancing their ability to metabolize various compounds, including herbicides. They primarily work by increasing the crop's tolerance to herbicide damage, activating herbicide-metabolizing proteins, and aiding in their detoxification. This study aimed to investigate the chemical effects of safeners in tomato cultivation and focus on injury reduction and tissue protection. The experiment followed a randomized factorial design (5x4) with four replications repeated twice. We evaluated the effects of herbicides (dicamba, 2,4-D, metribuzin, and sulfentrazone at 1/100) and safeners (benoxacor, fenclorim, melatonin, 2,4,6-T, and an untreated control). Safeners were applied to the seeds before sowing, and herbicides were …

View Dependent Simplification And Tessellation For Real-Time High Quality Rendering Of 3d Meshes, Dallin M. Hagman
View Dependent Simplification And Tessellation For Real-Time High Quality Rendering Of 3d Meshes, Dallin M. Hagman
Theses and Dissertations
The increasing complexity of 3D meshes and growing disparity in performance between high and low-end hardware necessitates more efficient rendering techniques that do not sacrifice visual quality. To support as many hardware configurations as possible, producers of 3D content provide several resolutions of each mesh. Low-end hardware is typically restricted to low-resolution meshes to maintain performance similar to their high-end counterparts, sacrificing visual appeal. However, the presence of hardware tessellation in nearly all modern GPUs presents the opportunity to render high-resolution versions of simplified meshes on low-end hardware with little computational cost. Some research has been conducted into this opportunity, …

Theses and Dissertations
Healthy soils are essential for sustaining the world's ecosystems and maintaining human lifestyles. The adoption of biological, chemical, and physical analyses to assess soil health is a relatively new concept with a paucity of scientific work assessing how these metrics are affected by field management in urban systems Soil samples (n = 110) were collected from a diverse range of sports fields and, for comparative purposes, golf courses, farm fields, non-sport urban, undisturbed forest, and non-vegetated sandy soils. The samples were then analyzed using biological, chemical, and physical metrics to determine if there were significant differences between sport/golf venues and …
Modeling The Influence Of Vibration On Flow Through Embedded Microchannels, Joseph S. Seamons
Modeling The Influence Of Vibration On Flow Through Embedded Microchannels, Joseph S. Seamons
Theses and Dissertations
The influence of vocal fold (VF) vibration on perfused flow through VF vasculature is an area of research that has previously received limited attention. The aim of the research presented in this thesis was to contribute towards an improved understanding of the effects vibration on perfusion through vasculature within the VFs. This was done using a series of computational simulations of geometric changes to, and perfusion through, microchannels embedded in VF models. A computational structural model based on synthetic VF models used in previous experimental studies was first developed. The model and its embedded microchannel were initially studied under static …
Using Quantitative And Kinetic Proteomics To Explore Proteostasis, Nathan Raul Zuniga Pina
Using Quantitative And Kinetic Proteomics To Explore Proteostasis, Nathan Raul Zuniga Pina
Theses and Dissertations
Every cell consists of carefully orchestrated biomolecules such as lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. To maintain internal stability (homeostasis), cells maintain the right amount of these molecules at the right time and at the right place. This process is especially true for proteins since they are the foundation functional units within the cell. Proteins form structures and perform chemistry that bestows cells overarching functional roles. Cells maintain protein homeostasis (proteostasis) by modulating synthesis, folding, and degradation processes (turnover) to maintain the abundance levels for all proteins. This is the foundational kinetic model of proteostasis that is covered in this work, and …

Economic Governance And Violence: A Cross-National Analysis, Steven Mccain
Economic Governance And Violence: A Cross-National Analysis, Steven Mccain
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding how economic governance influences routine activities is crucial within the field of criminology to better understand how grounds for violence emerge. Literature of cross-national studies concerning the effects of economic governance has recently developed to study its relationship with violence, specifically homicide. However, there is a deficit of frameworks related to criminological theory in this literature. Using a routine activity framework, the current dissertation seeks understand how different degrees of economic governance in general and, more specifically, the five areas of economic governance – size of government, legal system and property rights, sound money, freedom to international trade, and …
A Hybrid Cognitive Model For Machine Agents In Project And Action Teams, Joshua A. Lapso
A Hybrid Cognitive Model For Machine Agents In Project And Action Teams, Joshua A. Lapso
Theses and Dissertations
High performing human teams transcend complex domain uncertainty by achieving an emergent state of shared cognition, in which knowledge is organized, represented, and distributed to team members for rapid execution. However, this requires that individuals emit perceivable qualities upon which other members can make inferences about intent. In pursuit of future human and machine team studies, this research presents a hybrid cognitive model for machine agents in fully cooperative and semi-cooperative action and project teams. The hybrid cognitive model unifies the characteristics of the shared mental model and transactive memory system. The resultant model facilitates anytime selection over the two …

Monitoring The Effectiveness Of Wildlife Exits And Bobcat Use Along A South Texas Highway, Jamie E. Langbein
Theses and Dissertations
Roadside exclusion fencing is commonly used to mitigate wildlife road mortalities and property damages caused by wildlife-vehicle collisions. A potential consequence is that animals may become trapped on the road by fencing. On State Highway 100 in South Texas, the Texas Department of Transportation installed ten wildlife exits (WE) allowing animals to exit the roadway through a modified opening in the fence. However, some individuals used the WE to access the roadway. In this study, a new design was implemented, with narrower openings, a ramp and a clear plastic one-way door. While the updated design prevented road access for wildlife, …

Enhancing Time Series Hashing Performance Via Deep Orthogonal Hashing, Mahmudul Hasan Robin
Enhancing Time Series Hashing Performance Via Deep Orthogonal Hashing, Mahmudul Hasan Robin
Theses and Dissertations
Deep hashing has been widely used for efficient retrieval and classification of high-dimensional data like images and text. However, its application to time series data is still challenging due to the data’s temporal nature. To tackle this issue, a new deep hashing method has been proposed that generates efficient hash codes and enhances the time series hashing performance using a ResNet model with Orthohash (Cosine Similarity Loss). The proposed method uses one loss architecture while using ResNet model for efficient hashing. It uses the Character Trajectories dataset to extract discriminative features from the time series data. These features are then …

Comparing Socioeconomic Status To Educational Diagnosis Of Serious Emotional Disturbances: A Linear Analysis Of Texas Data, Cristina Rangel
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation was prepared to determine if a correlation existed between a student’s poverty level and an educational diagnosis of serious emotional disturbance. I hypothesize that students at or under the United States’ definition of poverty are more likely to exhibit signs and symptoms of a serious emotional disturbance and therefore be diagnosed and placed in special education. Both federal data (i.e., poverty levels) and Texas data (i.e., dx of SED) were compared to determine correlation and directionality. TEA combines districts into 20 regions. Special education placement data is publicly available on State databases. Federal poverty levels are available …

Mano De Obra: Exploring Processes And Materiality In Artwork, Karla Gabriela De La Fuente
Mano De Obra: Exploring Processes And Materiality In Artwork, Karla Gabriela De La Fuente
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis paper examines the theoretical derivatives and artistic influences that drive the artist’s ongoing series of works exploring the human experience of the working class in the border region of South Texas and beyond. Through the use of found objects, organic regional materials, adopted and adapted processes; the artist creates artwork that teeters on a tightrope between sweet, subtle naivety, and sudden, robust spoonfuls of truth. The artwork has an emphasis on the materiality, and the parallel between the “Mano de Obra” of the artist at work and that of the working class of our communities.
