A Literature Review Covering The Effect Of Residual Stresses On Fatigue Strength Of Steel, Clarence A. Calder Aug 1962

A Literature Review Covering The Effect Of Residual Stresses On Fatigue Strength Of Steel, Clarence A. Calder

Theses and Dissertations

Fatigue fracture usually is defined as the failure of a part at a stress below its breaking stress due to repetitive loading conditions. It is now a well known fact that a part, designed for a maximum stress well below the yield point of the material, may be very apt to fail under cyclic loading conditions over a period of time. The metal appears to "wear out" after a time just like humans do and fatigue failure occurs. Metal fatigue may be contrasted to animal fatigue in that l) its detection before the latter stages is normally difficult if not …

The Taxonomic Problem Of Polycelis In The United States, Lee F. Braithwaite Jul 1962

The Taxonomic Problem Of Polycelis In The United States, Lee F. Braithwaite

Theses and Dissertations

During the spring of 1941, Dr. C.L. Hayward, of the Brigham Young University zoology department, while on a field trip with his ecology class found some interesting planaria.ns at a place called Stewart's Flats on Mt. Timpanogos, Utah County, Utah. A fellow teacher, Dr. D. E. Beck, sent live specimens to Dr. L. H. Hyman of the American Museum of Natural History for identification. Although the specimens arrived in New York as a "putrid smelling soup,"1 the specimens, through correspondence, were thought to be Polycelis coronata (Girard), the same species Hyman collected in South Dakota during August 1929.

Arrobic Digestion Of Potato Waste, Emil D. Wahl Jun 1962

Arrobic Digestion Of Potato Waste, Emil D. Wahl

Theses and Dissertations

In order to assess the feasibility of aerobic digestion for the disposal of potato waste effluents, a prepared potato waste stream was processed in an activated sludge system. The waste was contacted with oxygen in an aerator, effluent from which was discharged to a settling cone of equal volume. A dilute product was discharged from the cop of the cone and a concentrated sludge stream from the bottom was recycled to the aerator.

Wastes contain 1750 and 3500 milligrams per liter of potato solids were fed at rates of 2 and 4 times the aerator volume per day, with a …

A Historical Study Of The Mormon Temple At Nauvoo, Illinois, Don F. Colvin

Theses and Dissertations

The Nauvoo Temple was a unique structure, one which symbolized "Mormonism" in the early period of its history. In its time, the temple stood as the chief structure of the city of Nauvoo. It rivaled all buildings in Illinois and the West during its brief history.

This study reviews the entire history of the temple, from when it was first contemplated until its fateful destruction, and beyond. It sheds light on the setting in which the great edifice was built.
