Causes Of The Mormon Boycott Against Gentile Merchants In 1866 And 1868, Peter Neil Garff Jan 1971

Causes Of The Mormon Boycott Against Gentile Merchants In 1866 And 1868, Peter Neil Garff

Theses and Dissertations

In the 1850s and 1860s Gentiles monopolized the mercantile profession in Salt Lake valley. Conflict arose between the Mormons and anti-Mormon merchants for essentially five reasons: Mormon Church leaders believed merchants charged exorbitant prices, encouraged the coming of Johnston's army, falsely accused them for the "assassination" of two Salt Lake City Gentiles, supported Gentiles who were "jumping" Mormon land claims, and supported an adamantly anti-Mormon newspaper. Church leaders maintained that the motive behind these actions was essentially the destruction of their church; therefore, they levied a boycott against the anti-Mormon merchants in 1866.

Because Church leaders felt the coming of …

Glycogen Levels In Cardiac And Skeletal Muscle Of Rats Recovering From Exercise, Walter Talley Judd Jan 1971

Glycogen Levels In Cardiac And Skeletal Muscle Of Rats Recovering From Exercise, Walter Talley Judd

Theses and Dissertations

In seeking answers to questions about how the human body functions under stressful situations, scientists, coaches, doctors, and athletes in general have all wondered about the role of exercise in the maintenance of good health. Good cardiovascular health, especially, is sought ardently, as it appears to be a major key to overall body fitness. Good cardiovascular health appears to go hand-in-hand with proper diet, proper rest, and proper exercise (1, 2).

The exercise phenomenon has attracted much attention and poses many questions. Just what is occurring when a person or an animal gets "in shape" by exercising. What bodily changes …

Origin And Distribution Of Selenium In The Upper Cretaceous Niobrara And Pierre Formations, Northeastern North Dakota, Robert M. Novak Jan 1971

Origin And Distribution Of Selenium In The Upper Cretaceous Niobrara And Pierre Formations, Northeastern North Dakota, Robert M. Novak

Theses and Dissertations

High concentrations of selenium, often as much as 28 ppm, have been found in the bentonitic zones near the contact of the Niobrara and Pierre Formations of Cretaceous age in northeastern North Dakota. A 64-foot section in the Pembina Hills area reveals that the highest selenium content occurs in shale and marlstone beds adjacent to the bentonite beds which, themselves, contain comparatively little selenium. Higher concentrations of selenium were found in the brown shale than in the black, with a small variation in color making a big difference in selenium content.

The selenium content of the shale and marlstone drops …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine Mahonri M. Young's philosophy of art as recorded in his personal writings and the writings of his contemporaries—particularly his close friend, Jack Sears.

Magazines, books, newspapers, and miscellaneous unpublished materials such as letters, theses, scrapbooks and personal papers were examined for the purpose of becoming more familiar with the character and personality of Mahonri Young. From these sources of information the following was attempted: (1) to record anecdotes and experiences which may have had some significance on the development of his philosophy, (2) to glean from his own writings his feelings and …

Cognitive Dissonance As A Function Of Internal-External Locus Of Control, Dennis U. Spjut Dec 1970

Cognitive Dissonance As A Function Of Internal-External Locus Of Control, Dennis U. Spjut

Theses and Dissertations

According to cognitive dissonance theory engaging in behavior inconsistent with one's beliefs arouses dissonance. When individuals choose to engage in a boring and repetitious task they tend to positively reevaluate the task. Recent research (Pallak, et al. 1967) using an incidental verbal learning paradigm indicates that subjects who voluntarily commit themselves to performing a boring task reduce dissonance via enhanced task performance rather than through positive task reevaluation. Both the arousal of dissonance and its reduction can be expected to vary with individual differences. The present study investigated the individual differences of sex and internal-external locus of control as related …

A Taxonomic Comparison To Uta Stansburiana Of The Great Basin And The Upper Colorado River Basin In Utah, Lloyd C. Pack Sep 1970

A Taxonomic Comparison To Uta Stansburiana Of The Great Basin And The Upper Colorado River Basin In Utah, Lloyd C. Pack

Theses and Dissertations

The lack of a comparative study between the Uta stansburiana of the Great Basin and Upper Colorado River Basin, and the fact that several reptile species have developed distinct populations in the Upper Colorado River Basin prompted this study. Twenty-one external characteristics of these lizards were compared, including several which had not been previously used in the separation of Uta stansburiana into subspecies. All of the statistical data were obtained from preserved specimens. Twelve of the twenty-one characteristics show significant differences between the Great Basin and Upper Colorado River Basin populations. The characteristics of back pattern and throat color show …

The Effect Of The Parasite Hymenolepis Diminuta On Iodine Economy In The Rat, David Gourdon Holmes Aug 1970

The Effect Of The Parasite Hymenolepis Diminuta On Iodine Economy In The Rat, David Gourdon Holmes

Theses and Dissertations

A balance of iodine within the rats is important for the maintenance of normal thyroid function. Because of Hymenolepis d[imi]nuta's affinity for certain nutrients, it may upset norma[l] iodine balance in the rat. To determine this, tapeworm-infected and non-infected rats were given 125Iodide orally and the percent uptake of iodide by the thyroid and the amount of radioac[tiv]ity in the tapeworms was determined. The percent distribution of the radio-iodinated compounds in the thyroid, tapeworms and feces was also determined. These procedures were repeated except 125Thyroxine was administered orally. There was a decrease in percent iod[id]e uptake by thyroids of tapeworm-infected …

Asexual Reproduction In Planaria Characteristics Of The Inhibitor(S), Linda Gail Sheffield Aug 1970

Asexual Reproduction In Planaria Characteristics Of The Inhibitor(S), Linda Gail Sheffield

Theses and Dissertations

A study was made of the postulated fission-inhibiting substance located in the cephalic region of Dugesia dorotocephala. Rearing decapitated planaria in four different concentrations (25, 50, 75 or 100 ug/ml) of head or whole body extract resulted in a positive correlation between the inhibition of fission rate and the concentration of extract. The difference in inhibitory activity between the two types of extracts was three percent at maximum. The inhibitory substance was partially inactivated at 60° C. There was a direct correlation between the length of time that the extract was heated and the inactivation of inhibitor. The active substance …

A Study Of The Electrophoretic Patterns Of Blood Serum Proteins From Two Populations Of Mountain Whitefish (Prosopium Williamsoni), Fred Richard Hansen Aug 1970

A Study Of The Electrophoretic Patterns Of Blood Serum Proteins From Two Populations Of Mountain Whitefish (Prosopium Williamsoni), Fred Richard Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Electrophoretic patterns on polyacrylamide gels of blood serum proteins from 74 mountain whitefish (Prosopium williamsoni Girard) were examined for differences as they pertained to two geographically isolated populations, age, and sex. Serum samples were acquired from two supposedly isolated populations, the lower Provo River and the lower Weber River. Comparisons among gels were made on the basis of protein distribution as indicated by number of fractions and their density. Serum proteins showed marked intraspecific differences between the males as well as the females of each population. No variations were found which could be attributed to degree of maturity. Definite pattern …

Evolution Of The Iguanine Lizards (Sauria, Iguanidae) As Determined By Osteological And Myological Characters, David F. Avery Aug 1970

Evolution Of The Iguanine Lizards (Sauria, Iguanidae) As Determined By Osteological And Myological Characters, David F. Avery

Theses and Dissertations

The family Iguanidae is almost completely restricted to the Western Hemisphere with its main radiations occurring in North and South America. There are also representatives on Fiji, Tonga and the Galapagos Islands, in the Pacific Ocean. Distantly related forms are also found on Madagascar off the Southeastern Coast of Africa. Although the iguanid lizards are familiar to most scientists interested in the tropics, their anatomy and evolution is poorly understood.

Effects Of X-Irradiation On The Brain Of White Rats, Bernell K. Dalley Aug 1970

Effects Of X-Irradiation On The Brain Of White Rats, Bernell K. Dalley

Theses and Dissertations

With the advent of the atomic age, a great deal of attention has been given to the effects of radiation of various types on the living organism. Some emphasis was placed also on the particular effects damaging radiation has on the central nervous system. Of particular importance was the dis -covery of the high resistance to irradiation exhibited by the central nervous system, and the observation of a latent period after exposure, during which the individual appears normal, followed by deterioration and death. Explan - ations of this unique reaction have caused some controversy and, currently, one of two theories …

Neuronal Coding Of Low Frequency Complex Stimuli At The Cochlear Nucleus And Inferior Colliculus Of Cat Brain, James L. Walker Aug 1970

Neuronal Coding Of Low Frequency Complex Stimuli At The Cochlear Nucleus And Inferior Colliculus Of Cat Brain, James L. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Articles have recently appeared by Erickson (1968) and Pfaff (1969) which propose that the study of the activity of a large population of neurons may contribute information about sensory coding which is supplementary to data obtained from single neuron studies. These authors propose that there are not enough neurons in the primary sensory pathways so that every stimulus can be represented by a separate neuron. They maintain that over-all measures of neuronal activity will be more fruitful in the study of sensory coding. The present study used such a measure (multiple unit techniques) to monitor the over-all discharge characteristics of …

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko Aug 1970

Experimenter Bias Effect As A Function Of Ambiguity, Gary D. Barko

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research and discussion has suggested that task ambiguity and experimenter-subject familiarity with the task are important factors affecting the generality and strength of the experimenter bias effect. These factors were conceptualized as inter-task ambiguity (inherent in the task) and two types of intra-task ambiguity (experimenter's familiarity with the task and subject's familiarity with the task). It was hypothesized that experimenter bias would: (1) be a significant factor in a more ambiguous task and not a significant factor in a less ambiguous task, (2) more likely be communicated to the subjects who were less familiar with the task, and (3) …

The Effects Of Various Treatments On Thiamin Diphosphate And Total Thiamin Levels Of Rat Tissues, Dong Hwa Park Aug 1970

The Effects Of Various Treatments On Thiamin Diphosphate And Total Thiamin Levels Of Rat Tissues, Dong Hwa Park

Theses and Dissertations

Tissue thiamin diphosphate was assayed enzymatically utilizing purified brewer's yeast apotransketolase. With this assay ten uumoles of thiamin diphosphate could be detected. Total thiamin was fluorometrically measured. For one to three days rats were placed under conditions of stress, consisting of loud noise treatment, emotional stress, deprivation of paradoxical sleep, and swimming to exhaustion, respectively. The body weight was markedly decreased at the end of the respective experimental periods except with the loud noise treated group, compared with the corresponding controls. Following two to three such consecutive treatments, the adrenal weight also showed a significant increase. Thiamin diphosphate and total …

The Effects Of Herbicide Applications On The Animal Populations Of Aspen Communities, Carl Eugene Wadsworth Aug 1970

The Effects Of Herbicide Applications On The Animal Populations Of Aspen Communities, Carl Eugene Wadsworth

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 475 acres of aspen, oak brush, and grass-forb-shrub communities were treated with herbicides. The populations of arthropods, birds, and mammals were investigated on treated and untreated areas and the results were compared. There was no difference between soil arthropod populations on treated and untreated aspen plots but a significant increase in these populations on treated meadow plots. The foliage insect populations were significantly lower on the treated aspen plots but were significantly higher on the treated meadow plots. The aquatic invertebrates were not affected by the treatments. Bird populations ware lower in the treated area during the nesting season …
